HotKey Mapping vs. Device Form Factor
My application makes heavy use of HotKeys and I've completely worked out everything from KeyDown, KeyUp, KeyHeld dectection & handling to KeyMasking. (The latter is where HotKeys go to die--that is, they're handled but they don't raise "the event").
My problem is a "Key Mapping" problem. My actual PocketPC device (a Dell Axim X3) has 6 HotKeys. The PocketPC Emulators have 4 HotKeys. On my device, HotKeys #1 and #6 are hard-to-press "outboard" buttons that will not be used in the app; I use the four main circular buttons that roughly correspond with the 4 main buttons on a Palm device. (I'm porting an existing Palm app to PocketPC).
For openers, Emulator HotKeys do not work right--they don't generate a KeyDown until after the (mouse) button is released. That's okay since this app will never be used on an emulator and I can single-step debug on the device.
The big problem I have is that I've no idea if there are actually 4 key devices in the marketplace or the existing base of PocketPC devices. Every example of registering HotKeys I've seen registers 6 keys. Since it's a software registration, registering a non-existent hardware button does not fail. And I have a funny feeling that trying to return the KeyList using the GAPI will simple tell me that everything below 256 is available. (And if it did work to tell me which keys a device actually has, it seems like an awful lot of overhead for this one thing.)
Simply put, on a 6 key device, I want buttons #2, #,3, #4, #5 to represent #1, #2, #3, #4. And my app is coded to do this now. It'd be nice if I could programmatically detect 4 or 6 key devices without which I'll resort to a user setting.
Any words of wisdom out there? Thanks in advance.

Mobile device acting as a server?
Hi. Please accept my apologies, my question isn't specific to PocketPC; I'm at a loss as to which newsgroup my question ought to be directed.
I have a wireless mobile device: an XP laptop with an LG VX4400 cellphone connected via USB using Verizon Wireless NationalAccess (40-50kbps).
My application: VERY infrequently the laptop will be requested to upload data it quietly gathers.
The problem: When the customer wants his data he wants it NOW! To me it isn't cost effective to have the laptop connect to the server once per minute only to discover that the customer isn't interested in seeing his data yet. The customer may go one week, or one month, or one day without requesting his data; he is unpredictable.
My plan: Since the cellphone is capable of accepting phone calls it seems best for the laptop to sit back and wait for a connection.
What do you, the collective community of professional architects and developers, think about this? Is there a better solution that evades me?
Can anyone point me to a resource that explains how to write a client/server app that connects to the server over a dial-up connection?
Thanks,
Brian. Tag: Javascript in VB.net Tag: 80780
Uninstallling with CeAppMgr.exe
I've successfully used CeAppMgr(from ActiveSync) for installing my
Pocket-PC program. I call CeAppMgr from my desktop installation program
(which also installs a desktop application that interacts with the PPC
one) and everithing works OK. Now I want to programmatically uninstall
the pocket-pc application from the desktop-uninstaller but I can't find
any reference to the command line option of CeAppMgr that (at least)
starts the remove-app process of the PPC application.
Is this possible?
Any comment on this will be very appreciated.

problems synchronizing pocket pc with sql server database
hello,
i am trying to synchronize a pocket access db located in my ppc with a remote table in sql server via activesync (with an odbc connection). Everything works fine until i check the indication to synchronize the tables. It gives me the following error:
"A synchronization partnership cannot be created because the source database name is too long. Choose OK to copy the database without synchronizing it or choose Cancel to end this operation, rename your source database, and try again later"
The names i am handling are not too long (max 10 ch), and i need to synchronize the ppc with the db in a way that i connect the ppc to the computer and the data is transferred automatically to the remote sql server.
I hope somebody can help me. Best regards,

Ftp problem
I need to send/receive files to/from an FTP Server using a PPC2002 based
terminal.
Since standard FtpPutFile seems not to work correctly under PPC 2002, i have
tried this basic sequence:
- FtpOpenFile
- InternetWriteFile
- InternetCloseHandle
The file is created on the FTP Server, i can see that the InternetWriteFile
function actually writes into the file (i have verified the content from Ftp
Server side), but when I call InternetCloseHandle, the file disappear from
Ftp Server.
Where is my mistake ?

Converting exe file
Hi
Is there any way to convert an exe file to ppc format without using ActiveSync's file transfer? The problem arised when we compiled the exe on a desktop and then transfered it to an ftp server, from where we download it to the ppc. Unfortunately, the exe file doesn't start (nothing happens when clicking on it).
When we transfer the same exe file over ActiveSync, everything works perfectly.
Does anybody know a solution for this?

How To program for an Accurate sub-second clock
Hi All
I'm using EVC++ 4.0. I'm also new to MFC.
I've used a timer event to provide a 'tick' which is then used to increment
my counters, and I display this as time
(hours:minutes:seconds:milliseconds).
However, it seems very inaccurate.
Is there an event from e.g. a real-time clock which I could use instead? It

essential: minimum is to count seconds.

Using cabwizard to build multiple cabs
Hi,
I am presently utilising the cabwizard.exe application to build cab
files for the deployment of an application.
I have recently came into the following two situations which I am
unsure how to resolve while utilising this method to produce
installations.
1) The requirement to include as part of my installation another
application already packaged as a cab file (i.e. Product B includes as
part of it Product A, and it should automatically be installed when
Product B is installed).
2) The requirement to make special versions of our application where
the installation needs to be modified slightly for a particular
purpose (perhaps an additional file deployed, perhaps a registry
setting changed slightly).
The first requirement can be resolved by modifing the main product's
inf file (Product B) to deploy Product A's cab file, and then
utilising a setup dll to actually install that additional cab on the
device. I am wondering if there is a better way to go about this.
The second requirement it seems is more difficult to achive, as there
doesn't seem to be any way include another inf file from within a inf
file (i.e. ProductB.inf including ProductBCustomisation.inf). In my
case I am storing the inf files in a source revision control
environment, and when we require a product customistation I am sharing
the files between multiple projects. The problem is that as soon as I
need to modify an installation parameter (deploy additional file, set
another registry key) I have to branch the inf file and hence
maintaince of both copies becomes a pain (presently I have about 6
copies to keep in sync). If I could include an additional inf file
(say ProductBCustomistaion.inf) I would only have one file which needs
to be project specific, and I wouldn't need to branch ProductB.inf all
the time.
Alternatively if cabwizard/inf files/cab files can not really be
manipulated to support these kinds of things, is there a better
approach (tool) to be dealing with these kinds of things.
Thanks,

Hi,
I am working on a project in which, analog data has to be read from a

I am wondering if this project is really feasible by using a simple
extender card. I am a beginner in this field. so, I am
not able to figure out the feasibility issues.
The things I have thought are:
1. if a device driver has been written to control the external circuit,
should I be having somekind of memory/hardware which will send the
device ID for the device driver to identify it.
I would appreciate u'r advice in this regard.

Good Pocket PC Development Book - recommendation please
Hi There,
I am a VB developer new to the world of using and developing on the Pocket
PC. I come across many frustrations. Like often when connected via USB and
exploring the Pocket PC device, all of a sudden I cannot see any files from
my Windows XP Pro laptop.
I'm also doing a project with ArcPad mapping software and I want this to be
the only application that I run on the PDA.
Other things I want to achieve are to change the default browser from IE
because Pocket IE cannot play video files.
Is there a good book that teaches in a concise way the fundamentals of
Pocket PC development so I can understand where the problems come from?
Ideally not a wishy washy book that explain what the buttons do, but one
that is aimed at developers and gives good practical details.
Sometimes I have posted a few questions to this group and not received
answers and I am not sure if this is because PDA development is still quite
a new area or that I still have such a bad understanding that I am not
asking the questions in the right way.
Any comments are welcome.
Kind regards

Handling multiple key press.
I am working with Intel PXA270 and it's keypad controller.
I have question on multiple key press of matrix key interface of

There is code related to multiple key press in Mainstone BSP, but I
think it does not work properly.
And the only code that i can't understand in keypad driver of
Mainstone BSP is that part.
When I press some matrix key chracter 1 is printed. without releasing
it, pressing 2 key, not 2 but 1 is printed. I think 2 not 1 should be
printed. things like this happen when multiple key is pressed.
And in my guess, only way to process multiple key press is memorizing
key that is pressed presently. and in next interrupt event comparing
information on currently pressed keys and previously pressed keys.
But code in BSP is not this way, though I cannot understand it now.
Can anyone explain what the code means and how I can process multiple
key press well?

I have an MFC application that has a separate worker thread. The worker thread needs to show a dialog box from time to time.
I have tried constructing the dialog and calling DoModal() from the thread. Also, the thread has a pointer to the document and I have tried showing the dialog from there.
Either method works just fine to show the dialog.
The problem is that when the user closes the dialog box, the application main frame hides itself, but is still running in the background.
I have tried ::SetForegroundWindow() and ::ActivateWindow() and neither of these works. I have also tried AfxGetApp()->GetMainWnd()->ActivateWindow(). This doesnt work either.

pocket word (pwi) to openoffice, html convertor
Hello,
I have put together a small open-source C++ application which can convert
simple PocketWord text documents to sxw (OpenOffice) and xhtml.
You can try it here:
http://adrian.dimulescu.free.fr/article.php3?id_article=10
The application is at alpha-level but it's beginning to be good enough to
convert my PocketWord documents on Linux on a regular basis. Some
indication about KDE integration are given on the web page. Some other
export formats might be added in the future, some more work for making the
thing more stable is also foreseeable.
Unlike the ActiveSync official convertor, the non-Latin1 characters are not
discarded which makes me personally pretty happy.
The parser code was written by David Eriksson from synce.sf.net, thanks. If
anybody's interested, please download it and tell me what you think.

Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition problems and Dell Axim X30
Anyone having problems with .NET CF legacy apps that run very slowly when

2003 Second Edition?
Certain areas of our contact manager application involving image display and
dataflow to/from SD cards that worked fine in WM2003 Standard on iPAQ 2215's
and Audiovox 5050 Phone Edition (400 MHz Intel XScale PXA255) are extremely
slow in WM2003 Second Edition on the Dell Axim X30 running on the 624 MHz
PXA270. (with the same SD cards)
I'm hearing that these problems may also exist in the Toshiba Pocket PC's
that have been upgraded to WM2003 SE
Had read that using the HI_RES_AWARE resource item will bypass an additional
layer of software in WM2003 Second Edition and speed things up for legacy
apps, but we just tried it and saw no increase in speed.

Custom Web Browser in Full Screen Mode - Is it possible?
Hi There,
I'm still very new to the world of Pocket PC development. I have a
requirement where I have an application running on the PDA that makes calls
to a URL. Traditionally this will open IE on the Pocket PC.
However, I would like this to open IE with the address bar being hidden and
in a full screen mode.
In an ideal world, I would use a tool like Visual Studio to develop my own
Pocket PC Browser (using some browser object) and have my own buttons that
communicate with another calling application. I could then hide things like
the address bar and have custom buttons that can send the user back to the
original calling application and some other custom navigation buttons.
The thing is being new I am a bit confused not sure where to start.
First is it possible to (easily) develop my own browser and then make it
that on a pocket PC, this is the default application for displaying HTML
pages. Will this browser be able to handle the full functionality of the
normal Pocket IE browser (e.g. play videos and sounds assuming pocket IE can
do that)
Generally if anyone can point me to a good website with information on
customising Pocket PC, I saw articles about building new shells, but I think
this is out of the scope of my project.
Incidentally the application that is triggering the URL which opens IE is
ArcPad - a map displaying application.
The idea is when users click on areas of the map, we want information to be
displayed. At the moment you can do this with a URL which opens IE, but we
want something other then IE, or to be able to hide things in IE.
I hope this makes sense.
Any help on these matters is greatly appreciated as you may tell I am quite
new to Pocket PC development.
Kind regards
