Difference between Windows CE and Windows Mobile 2003 SE???

What is the difference between Windows CE and Windows Mobile 2003 Second
Edition?

Is Windows CE the previous version of the mobile operating system? And what
does the CE stand for?

Windows CE is the underlying Operating System. Pocket PC is a platform built
on top of it with a specific shell and application set. All Pocket PCs run
Windows CE - Pocket PC 2000 and 2002 are based on CE 3.0, Pocket PC 2003 and
2003 Second Edition run on CE.NET 4.2
I really don't think there has ever been an official answer for what CE
stands for...

I always thought that the CE stood for Compact Edition... but I can't say
for sure.
