Iam new to Pocket PC Development. I have created a
simple application using evb 3.0. and i tested it using
Pocket PC emulator . Now i wanted to Deploy the
Application on the Device . i Have created a setup by
using "Application Install Wizard" . It had created the
following Directories
1. App
2 . CD1
3. Arm 1100 (4K) v3.00
4 .I486 (4K) v3.00

I have also included the "require device runtime "
checkbox .

Then i distributed the CD1 directory to my friend and he
clicked the setup.exe
it installed the Application . But when running the
Application it tells "runtime error"
but i checked inlcude the device runtime while creating
setup

Please Advice me
1) what are the files and folders i need to
distribute.
2) and any other possiblities to deploy the
application.

The Device im having is below

Operating system Pocket PC 2002 Phone Edition
OS upgradeability via Flash ROM (32MB)
Handwriting recognition software Transcriber; Graffiti
Bundled applications Pocket Outlook; Pocket Word; Pocket
Excel; File Explorer; Pocket Internet Explorer; Terminal
Services Client; VPN Client; Server Sync Client; MSN
Messenger; Microsoft Reader; Calculator; Windows Media
Player; Voice Recorder; Solitaire; Phone; SIM Manager;
WAP browser Pocket IE
HTML browser Pocket IE
Synchronisation software ActiveSync
Desktop software Outlook
Host system requirements PC with Windows 98/
98SE/ME/2000/XP

Thanks in Advance

I'm surprised no one has answered this. I don't use eVB, so I don't
have any real answers. But I do have some suggestions that should
help.

I just used google (http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search) to
look up
evb deploy
and got 293 hits. A quick glance suggests at least will be useful.

I believe the following is a good source of info for eVB developers:

Hi Kamal,

Your Pocket PC has the runtime in the ROM. However, Pocket PC 2003 devices
do not have the runtime built-in.

The solution depends on the exact message your friend sees. It is probably
the HTML page that says "click here to download the Runtime". In that case
all he needs to do is install it.

In eVB the option to include the runtime won't include the Pocket PC 2003
runtime.

While there is a download available that enables eVB for Pocket PC 2003,
please be aware that eVB applications are unlikely to run under the next
version of Windows Mobile. It is strongly advised that developers planning
to target future devices migrate applications to the .NET Compact Framework.

More info on .NET CF can be found at:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/mobility/prodtechinfo/devtools/netcf/

A whitepaper on moving from eVB to VB.NET can be found at:

I saw something on this in a magazine recently. I get a lot of support
emails from our customers trying to make our eVB application run on a
PPC2003 device, and have to explain the 'download the runtimes' issue. I am
looking at a rewrite in eVC to get around the problem. .NET CF doesn't
address this issue, though, because we'd have the same problem with users of
older devices needing to download the 'runtime' for .NET CF. Or am I wrong?

At the moment, customers with PPC2003 devices are the minority (we're
largely selling software to existing PPC users) so it makes some sense to
leave it as it is.

Mike.

I'd say that really depends. Rewriting in C/C++ may take a heck of a lot
longer than in VB.NET, especially if you don't have C experience. You have
to weigh that cost againt the alternatives of maybe distributing the CF with
your app or some other mechanism for deployment.

That's all fine and dandy for someone who is somewhat familiar with computers,
but what about the typical user? Sally-Joe pushing papers all day won't
have a clue what's wrong when she tries running your eVb program after
removing it from the cradle. At least that's the problem I'm having.

I would like to auto load the eVb runtime in the PPC 2003 clients but
nothing seems "right" for the situation. PPC03 doesn't use wceload (or
at least mine doesn't) and you can't run the eVb cab from the PC
since RAPI doesn't run cab files. And we certainly can't expect Sally-Joe
to traverse the system using the file manager.

Is there a way to automate loading the eVb runtime for these people?

Pocket PC 2000 and Pocket PC 2002 do not have the Compact Framework in ROM,
but Pocket PC 2003 does. So yes, it's similar scenario. You can however
include the redistributable runtime package with your application.

I would leave as-is, but consider changes for the "next version" of my app.
