Get the SDK from Symbol for the device.

To add to what Chris said... If you aren't using a Symbol PPC (I think there
are a couple of other manufacturers who sell devices with barcode readers,
though Symbol are the only ones that I have used), then go to the
appropriate manufacturer's web site and download the required SDK. The ones
from Symbol have useful example code that illustrate the barcode reader in
action.

Using the SDK to write code specifically for the Symbol scanner _will_
produce the best results. But you can use the "keyboard wedge" that
comes with the scanner. The "keyboard wedge" is a stand-alone program
that captures data from the scanner and then mimics a keyboard to send
the data to whatever window has focus. It is, indeed, a kludge. But I
use this approach for most of my customers, and they are happy. I'm
happy because I support a wide variety of devices and don't like to
write device-specific code.
