Hi all,

I've currently got a couple of apps written in eVB and I'm considering
chaging them over to C#. I'm looking at C# simply out of hobby/interest
sake. I'd really like to go all the way to VS.NET, but it is simply way to
far outside of my price range. I was also considering VB.NET but would like
to try C#. So my question is, is there anything about PPC development in C#
that I should know about? I'd be getting Visual C#.NET Standard, and writing
for PPC 2003. Does C# Standard contain everything needed out of the box?
I've had experience in both Java and C++ before and hence my interest in C#.
The apps in question are fairly simple data input and collation beasts.
Any advice is very welcome.

TIA,

Steve,

I'm glad that you ask this question, because Visual C# is not sufficient to
develop applications for PPC's. Only VS.NET 2003 contains smart device
programmability. See also this FAQ at OpenNETCF.org:

Hmm, thanks for that. Guess I'll be sticking to eVB, at least for PPC
development.

Be aware though that eVB is at its end of life. For PPC 2003 you can still
download and install an eVB runtime on the device but eventually the product
will be phased out.

Crud... so you mean this box of VS.net 2002 sitting on my shelf - yet
to be opened/installed for fear of messing up my production apps - is
not going to work for developing PocketPC apps???

I already need to upgrade? Anyone know the upgrade price off hand?

Hi,
it USED to be $29, but this expired end Sept 2003. Prices are at
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/howtobuy/default.aspx and would appear to
be $549 for the upgrade for the pro version

and what will be taking its place as the lead PPC
development language?

Seriously, we all need some answers as to what to devote
our time to. will evC be taking over, or will the PPC
just die out.

Hmm, Thanks for the link, but OUCH. Dang, that hurts having a yet to
be opened copy of VB.NET 2002 Enterprise still sitting on my shelf.

So, just how bad is embedded Visual Tools, eVB, for development? I
just need to get an old DOS app replaced to emulate its current
functionality.

The DOS app collected data to a local handheld database, then upon
returning to the office it extracted the data to a text file and
uploaded it via zmodem to the host computer.

Doable in eVB?

eVC will stay and be available for native Win32 applications on PPC. On the
other side you will see managed applications, written in C# or VB.NET,
making use of the .NET Compact Framework. These FAQ's give you some more
background information:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/mobility/default.aspx?pull=/library/en-us/dnppcgen/html/devmobfaq.asp#devmobfaq_topic1.
To answer your last question, no, PPC will not just die out.

Re: eVB to C# by Brian

Brian

Hi Mike,

I'm only a tinkerer for smart device programming in .NET, but it really is
fantastic. There's room for improvement but I love the fact that I work in
the same IDE, same language for ASPX web pages, smart device apps, console
apps, etc. I never did like the eVB IDE.

The upload part via zmodem _may_ be the only part that gives you trouble. A
big shortcoming of the compact framework (stuff obviously had to get cut,
but it's good to know what's cut before you dig in) is the use of a COM
interop. Working with native DLLs, the WinAPI, etc., can be tricky, but
without knowing more it may actually be quite easy. The rest should be a
snap.

Good luck,
Brian
