    - MSM 2004 Premium and Checkfree Greetings! Is anyone familiar with how to setup Checkfree from within MS Money?     - Money 2004 - Bills/Deposits entered from Autobudget not showing up in Budget Current Status screen In the past, I've been all for Autobudget, but for some reason it's totally screwing me up now. I've just set up a new budget (finally getting organized), and autobudget did it's thing and pre-populated most categories. I made changes where necessary, and when finished it took me to the "Review your current budget status" screen. I was very surprised to be over budget in almost EVERY category that Autobudget touched. It seems that every single item that was pulled from the Bills/Deposits screen with a red icon (i'm guessing these are withdrawals...that's what they all look like to me) is showing up the budget, but is not showing up under the "budgeted" column in the "current status" screen. So here's an example (yes, fake numbers) On Budgeting Expense screen: Car Payment: Car 1: 50.00 Car 2: 100.00 Other Car Payment: 0.00 Subtotal: 150.00 The 150 does get added to the expense total. Now, when looking at the current status screen, it says that Car Payment has an Actual spend of 150.00 but a budgeted amount of 0.00, thereby putting me over budget. WTF?!? After playing around, I tried to change the "Other Car Payment" amount to the 150, and sure enough, it pulled the Car Payment category from the Expenses over budgeted limits section. unfortunately, this makes the subtotal 300.00 above, which messes up the entire budget. i tried removing the two car payments garnered from bills/deposits (autobudget), but they won't remove. i deleted the category, hoping to add it back empty, but when i added it back, it repopulated them.     - MSN Money web site Help... I can't get my current 2005 money file to syncronize with MSN. I used to use passport with Money 2004, but stopped. Now that I have 2005. There are some feature that I want to use. For some reason it walks me through the prosses of saying DELETE my old MSN Money Website data. But it never does. It just come back on the next login and say i am using the wrong file. I can't find anywhere on the web to reset this. I submitted it to microsoft support. Does anyone here have any ideas?     - Buying M04 Dlx at close out $ just for the two-year MSN Bill Pay? M04 Deluxe came with two years of MSN Bill Pay included. And, I believe the expiration dates on the box stated the offer is good through Sep XX, 2006 (looks like they keep a three year window: end of product sales cycle, plus two years). So, I had this idea: If you see M04 Dlx anywhere for say, $20, it's a bargain if only for the two-years of prepaid MSN Bill Pay, (I recall that was the higher end MSN Bill Pay, @6.99/month * 24 months = ~ $167). But, if you want to use M05 or later versions (the whole point here being you buy M04 only for the prepaid MSN BP), this needs to work also: Can you open the M04 box, create whatever minimal accounts necessary, sign up for the MSN BP service, only to take that sign up and get it to work with your M05 installation?     - Font sizes are microscopic The font sizes in MS Money 2005 are microscopic on my screen (i.e. I can't read any text in the program unless I put my face three inches in front of the screen)! I use a 21" monitor at 1600x1200 resolution. I looked through all the options but found no place to change the font size or font family. I just read in the FAQ and in an MS Support page that this appears to be by design. Lowering my display resolution or using the "Large Fonts" setting in Display Properties are unacceptable "solutions" for me. This behavior of MS Money is unbelievable to me. Does MS think that no one uses display resolutions above 1024x768? And it seems ironic to me that MS Money has a web-browser- like user interface. One of the fundamental benefits of using web browsers is supposed to be "display independence". That is, each user should (at least) be able to change the font size to match his computing device (whether it be a desktop or a PDA). According to the MS Support page, MS Money has had this limitation for several years. I am just so completely shocked that a modern application like this written by Microsoft provides no good way for people to adjust the font sizes. I've been using Quicken for nine years. I wanted to see how MS Money compared, but as long as this limitation exists, I have to stay with Quicken. Astonishing! :-) Tag: I thought is was supposed to learn Tag: 175055

    - Older Money File My old machine recently crashed and on my new machine I have Money 2004 installed. I had a guy recover my old Money file on a CD but now my new machine will not import my old file/checking account. I think I was using something like version 3.0.     - Three words to describe Money 2005... Wasted screen space. Holy cow! This a TERRIBLE use of screen real estate. In register view, nearly 25% of the scren is filled up with the toolbars and *WHITE* space with no meaningful information!     - How best to set up credit card purchases which are paid out of chequing I want to make purchases with a credit card... which I will immediately pay off thru my chequing account. With the credit card acct. I can specify the categories of purchases for budget & reporting purposes, but what do I put on the chequing account for my credit card payment? In M2004, the software acts as a front-end to the Bank One web based bill pay service. Any payments, changes transmitted via M2004 shows up instantly in Bank One's web based bill pay.     - My personal pet peeves review Having been a money user since early 1999 here's what I'm seeing: 1. It's turned into IE on steiroids. What was a clean, easy to use interface has become confusing, complicated, etc.. based interface that seems to try and blend the application and the web, and doesn't do either very well. Finding various settings has become quite a chore, as it seems to lead you round in circles between the app, the web and back again. 2. Online services - nightmare..... Half of them aren't working correctly. Upgrade process produces a upgrade document suggesting that steps must be taken to ensure proper online usage. Contacting the support resources as indicated in the document - no joy. They have no idea what you're talking about bounce you to other resources who don't know what you're talking about and in the end, you end up not knowing if you're configured correctly or not. 3. Bill pay - worse nightmare. As someone who's been happily paying bills via Money since 99 through Checkfee (apparently now MSN Bill Pay - and yes I know back in the 90's it wasn't checkfree), Money keeps wanting me to disable this service so that it can somehow synchronize it's data with the web (not working), and claims that it will be re-enabled afterwards (its not). 4. Account setup - Any attempts to add/update accounts to do online services leads you through the same loop (see above). Worse, if you're willing to disable the service as instructed and then attempt to online enable an account you get the "unavailable try again later" spiel. 4. Links don't work... Various links such as "Access my money data on the web", experian plus score and/or credit report links in the reminders/credit section don't work. Nor does it provide an appropriate error message indicating what to do (apparently you need to disable bill payment services, somehow get money synchronization to work - which doesn't - and then somehow get bill payment to work again and then these links will apparently work again)... I'm so peeved at this upgrade I can't even begin to express it all... Several calls to PSS have been fruitless, frustrating and downright insulting of my intelligence. I get someone who A) doesn't speak english B) clearly has NO EXPERIENCE with the product in question C) has NO IDEA what I'm talking about and D) has the temerity to suggest that Money 2005 is not a valid active product and tries to quickly blow me off by suggesting I try the web site and/or pay for an incident and then suggests that I contact my "local administrator" when I question her about her statements. When I insist on speaking with a supervisor they finally assign a case number and when I finally get through to an "engineer" with a case number assigned (who I suspect is not an engineer at all), she A) doesn't speak english much better than the first one, B) doesn't appear to know anything more than the first one and C) calls me back but doesn't appear to have kept her callbacks straight as she is asking for someone other than myself by name and D) finally tells me she can't help me and that it needs to go to someone who actually knows what's going on (i.e. outside of India).... About the only positive thing I can claim is the support resources I've spoken to were polite and actually tried to repeat back the nature of my issue to me (got it wrong two out of three tries though).     - Money 05 OFX import? I just got MS Money 2005. The OFX import from my bank, which used to work fine in Money 2002 is now broken. When I try to import the OFX, Money 2005 tells me: The file you attempted to import appears to be invalid or contains corrupt data. Please download the file again.     - One more M05 peeve and stuff What's with the account list masking off all but the last four digits of account numbers with X's? I mean, seriously, this is just beyond whacko. It's better Security Theater than the TSA show at your neighborhood airport. The account number is one r-click "See account settings" away. Whatever could be the point of hiding it on this screen? Who are we hiding it from? The application is trying to encourage shipping financial data all over the web at all times of the day and night in the name of "Essential" function and "most users prefer" and here on the Account List it tries to hide my account numbers from, ahem, me? Microsoft has added the whole yodlee loop to handling people's financial data and here they want to get cutesy about hiding account numbers? What a joke. Who derived the requirements for this upgrade? Daffy Duck? Anybody else notice Charles and Amy using the PowerBook in the screen for setting up Tools|Settings|Sharing? Does this mean that Money for the Mac is coming? (Of course, why this settings screen among all of the others in the random walk we now call Tools|Options needs a pretty little picture is another interesting question.) BTW, for those of you who are curious what the Fact Sheet meant when it said "New Multiuser access. Now the primary Money user can allow another person to view, monitor and manage the same Microsoft Money file from different locations without sharing passwords.", I can answer that question. Hint: it doesn't mean what it says. What it really means, apparently, is that multiple Passport users can get associated with your Sync With the Web account. I think Microsoft is INTENTIONALLY trying to mask or downplay the interaction of this version with the web. I think they are betting that high negative reactions to the question "I want my financial data scattered all over the web" can be overcome by soft-pedaling what lots of these features actually do and I think they are betting that the same users who are paranoid about security and privacy will be too ill-informed and too lazy to really figure out what they this thing really does under the covers. I'm sure Microsoft would say that all of this is explained one place or another in the application, and they probably are correct. But any long time newsgroup reader knows that even things like the file upgrade dialogs about revertability and the .Mnn file and so forth are at best not understood and, more typically, not even noticed or remembered. BTW, I'm still searching for "Enhanced Spending Analysis. This powerful feature automatically generates a pie chart of expense categories over various time frames, and shows dollar amounts and percentage breakouts for each area. With the new Spending Average, people can view a monthly dollar average for spending per category based on past account data." I found a pie chart in reports.Maybe this is the one they were talking about? Where these averages are remains a mystery.     - Essential Account view/duplicate accounts?? Just upgraded to Money 2005 (from 04) and I now have four credit card accounts instead of two. After calling MS tech support I was told that the reason I have four accounts instead of two is; two have the new Essential Account Register view and two have the Advanced Account Register view. This is dumb. Why does it show you the different views as duplicate accounts? It makes it look like you have more accounts then you really do. It even calls them a different name of the original accounts... Anyone experience this strange function??? Very disappointed as this feature doesn't make sense!     - Experian Service downgraded? I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but it seems that the credit monitoring functions have been severely downgraded since the release of M05. The way it used to work: When you log in to Experian (via the link in Money) you could view your "Plus Score" AND your credit report for FREE. The way it works now: When you log in to Experian (via the link in Money) you could view your "Plus Score" for free, but if you want to view the details of your credit report then you have to pat $9.95 each time. At first I thought this was a "feature" of M05, but on checking the archived reports it appears this behavior began on 9/16/2004, and I didn't install M05 until 9/17.     - Upgrade from Money 2004 to Money 2005 - balance problems I just upgraded from Money 2004 to Money 2005, and 2 of my accounts (a savings account and a credit card) showed significantly different balances from the last time I looked at them in Money 2004. It seems that, for some reason, when it converted my 2004 file to 2005, it only grabbed a portion of the transactions, and considered the balance as of just before the first transaction it grabbed to be $0, when both accounts actually had non-zero balances at that time.     - Lump-sum deposit and withdrawal I am working in Shanghai and now using Money 2005 Premium for my finance management. The bank here offers "Lump-Sum deposit and withdrawal" which has a higher interest rate than the average "deposit and withdrawal". There are some preset durations for "Lump-Sum deposit and withdrawal" you can choose from, like 3 months, 6 months, 9 months... The longer the duration, the higher the interest rate. I put 10000 as "Lump-Sum deposit and withdrawal" with the duration of 3 months and set auto-renew another 3 months for it when due, which means after 3 months the bank will have another 3 months for it with simple interest. This process will keep going until the day you get all the money out. Though the interest rate for it may change on a monthly basis, it will remain unchanged within the duration you choose. So when it is due,the bank is giving another 3 months with the new interest of the first day of the new duration time. It is simple interest, so when I am to get the money out some day, the bank will calculate the interest for the past every 3 months summed up as the total interest. My question is how Money 2005 premium can aid me in this process. All I need to do is first set it up with the initial startup amount and interest rate. Then every 3 months Money will remind me to enter the interest for the next 3 months.     - Microsoft Money 2003 Password help please I have never used Money 2003 for doing anything other than debugging my MSN Portfolio when it refused to donwload transactions from Schwab over a year ago when certain OFX transactions were causing Brokerage download to abort. Support kept telling me to use Money, so I broke down and bought it (Money 2003) over a year ago. It did allow me to download brokerage data and see the audit trail of OFX transactions, and by trial and error I determined what was causing the problem. I couldn't get Schwab support to change what it was sending nor could I get MSN Portfolio support to allow downloading to continue when it encountered the "error" transaction as Money seemed to do. My final resolution (work around) was to quit downloading data for the 3 of my 28 portfolio accounts until after 3 or 4 months Schwab stopped sending the data. At that point I uninstalled Money 2003 and reinstated downloading the 3 accounts in MSN Portfolio. All was fine for over a year when the "New Improved" (NOT) MSN Portfolio was released in July. After three or four weeks of almost utter frustration I finally go a *.inv backup file to load and look halfway decent. Now the .mny file is about 20MB instead of the 300KB size of the .inv file and MicroSoft insists on trying to send the data to some server in never-never-land. I don't know if this has ever occurred or not (nor do I care as long as the data is only the machine I use to access it on). But it seems that if I want to get brokerage data downloaded I must use Money to accomplish the task. So back to my archieved worthless (to me) software bin I went and dragged out the Money 2003 disk and installed it. Trying to open Money 2003 prompts me for a password for my .mny file. Every password that I have ever used for a passport has been tried as well as Schwab password, userid, old password I used on Money over a year ago before I uninstalled it. Nothing seems to work and keeps telling me I have entered an incorrect password. The My Portfolio.mny file I'm using is the one created from the latest .inv backup file (7/21/2004) which MSN Portfolio converted to the .mny file, and I don't believe I was ever asked for any password when it created it. "Help With Lost Passwords" only talks about .NET passwords and not .mny file passwords. I don't care about setting up bank and credit card accounts or anything other than getting my MSN Portfolio to reflect the download data from Schwab. Help what is Money 2003 looking for.     - rental properties in MS Money I have been through all threads in this newsgroup dating back to 1999 on how to set up MS Money to manage rental properties. I have yet to see a concrete answer. Most posts like this one I am writing go unanswered or say something like "use classifications" however. Does anyone out there have an extremely detailed step-by- step example on how they manage a rental property in MS Money? I am at a complete loss on how to even start tracking this in MSM, from purchasing the property to tracking expenses/income, running reports, to selling the property, etc. I would highly appreciate anyone's *detailed* answer and samples/examples.     - M05 Won't Perform Background Download I've seen a few posts asking the following question but no solid responses. I've downloaded and installed M05 standard. Upon opening the program I get a message that says it is performing a background download of the rest of the program. The problem is that there is no network activity.     - password protected backup files After installing Windows XPs sp2, my Microsoft Money became corrupted. I uninstalled then reinstalled it. The problem now is that when I try to restore a backup, it keeps asking for a password. I have never password protected it. How can I restore my backup without having to start from scratch? Every transaction I make with my debt card always has the same store at the
payee "Moka House" and it is always lists as a "Insurnace" it is driving me
crazy. Can anyone suggest what I can do to fix this to make the program
learn?

Go to Accounts&Bills->Categories&Payees->Payees->PreferredPayeeNames
which shows how downloaded names are translated into Payees. Record
the Payee Name Variation(s) shown for "Moka House". Delete the
entries that are not necessarily "Moka House".

Then click on GoToPayeeRulesManager. Excluded Payee Names
identifies words and phrases that should be ignored from the payee
field (e.g., check, deposit). Add each word or phrase that were
listed as a Payee Name Variation that you recorded.

While you are at it, it is usually a good idea to select
Tools->Options->OnlineServices->ReplacePayeeNames....

You may want to set
Tools->Options->OnlineServices->AddADescriptionToTheMemoField
