I have an old computer w/win 98, no longer connected to the internet, and is
pretty much collecting dust. When I got the computer, it came with disks for
Money 98 and also Quicken basic 98. I have never installed either one, and
have no idea what the programs are capable of, but will bring the old
computer out of moth balls if either of these programs can perform a certain
task. I am in need of a program that I can make a master list of entries,
and then have each entry automatically go to a sub category by means of code
of some sort (i.e., all items with 101 to go to sub 101, all items with 102
to sub 102, etc.). Could some kind person tell me if this is possible in
either of these programs? I will gladly buy a tutorial book on either
program and muck through it myself, but don't want to spend the money until
I know it is possible to do this.
Thanks!
Mary

Mary, you are talking about an operating system that Microsoft no longer
supports and a badly outdated version of Money. It sounds to me like you
want Money to do something it isn't designed for. Is the use you are
contemplating relevant to keeping financial data

Yes, it is for keeping financial data. What I want is to enter purchases
made of commissioned work of several artists. I would like a master data
base (sales made that day) that would also create a separate data base for
each artist without me having to enter the information twice. It doesn't
have to be anything fancy, so I just need to know if this is possible to do
in money.

Why don't you download the trial version of M04 available at
http://www.microsoft.com/money and find out for yourself?

trying the trial version is too easy.

All I want to know is if this is a feature in Money98.

Mary, the reason we are suggesting you try it yourself is that none of us, I
suspect, are 100% sure of what you want to achieve. Only you know exactly
that.

It would therefore be sensible for you to download the M2004 trial and try
it yourself.

Any of us could say - yes it can do that and there would then be an extended
dialog with both parties talking at cross purposes and getting angry.

Can you drive a screw with a hammer? Well, yes, sort of.

Not directly is the best answer I can give you. Money is not a generalized
database. It's pretty hard strapped to personal financial management. Can I
think of ways you could fake it? Yes, but I know Money a whole lot better
than you do, obviously, and I don't want to spend the rest of my life trying
to teach you how to do something very non-standard with Money through a
newsgroup. If you have M98 available, you can certainly try it in M98 as
well. The differences between M98 and M04 as relates to what you are trying
to do are probably pretty much zero. If you try M98, beware that it is the
single buggiest version of Money in the history of the product by a long
shot.
