Let me get this straight. You have an older computer with a working
install of Money 99. You can move .mny files and/or backup files to
an new computer with Money 2003 installed. The new computer,
however, cannot restore or convert using the files from the old
machine.
MS told you there is an error in a dll file on the old machine, so
the files produced by your old install cannot be used my Money 2003.
There is apparently no way to fix those files, so the best solution
is to do a QIF export of the accounts on the old computer and to
import them all at the same time to the Money 2003 install.
And you are feeling cheerful. Is that about right? I went back to
look at your several recent threads to see if I might be missing
something.
--------------------------
So maybe I should stop right there while you are feeling good.
Collecting the qif files at this point to the new machine sounds
like a good idea for safety, but I wonder if you really have to give
on the actual Money file. This probably won't work easier, but QIF
import has its limitations beyond the effort.
What I am wondering is if you were to put a version of salv.exe over
on the old machine, could it produce a .mny file you could
successfully convert on the new machine. Perhaps the version on your
Money 2003 disk would work or perhaps the newest one available from
the MS web site would be better.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;274584 has
the info.
If you do the QIF import thing, Richard Bollar has discovered that
it is better that the investment accounts be imported first in
the process. How? Name the QIF files such that they come first
alphabetically. So you could, for example, lead off each QIF file
name with an underscore. That will alphabetize before numbers and
letters.
And a plus of QIF import is that you will have a clean file.
Another thing I would consider is to install Money 2003 on the old
machine:
1. After you have pulled off the .qif files.
2. Into a different folder
Expect both Money 2003 and Money 99 to both work on the old machine.
Then see if Money 2003 could do the conversion there. OK. So these
may be blind hope, but you might find them worth a try. Or perhaps
installing Money 2000 would convert successfully. Just grasping.
Perhaps acceptance of your fate is the best.
Sorry. Hope this is not the fate of many users.
