first place I went. The two main things I want to remove are the related
lines on the left navigation bar that take me to external sites and all the
junk on the investing page. really any item that takes me to an external
link.

Tools> Settings> Program Settings> "Turn off sponsorship links ..." is
your only control.

Beyond that, never update and set your firewall not to all Money to
connect to the internet. The ads already on display will still stay
there, though.

Don't click the related links on the left navigation bar that take you
to external sites. It may be hard, though, to distinguish between
what's on the web and what's in the program. I'm sure that's by
design.

Understand that to Microsoft this is "MSN Money" and that stuff is
considered an essential part of their business model. They let you manage
your finances with the tool in the hope that you will click that stuff. None
of us like it either. The alternative is probably--and may yet be--no tool
at all.
