Thanks Cal
Now when I back up it asks me to check floppy, how do I tell it to back up
in the usb port.

Going to go get one now.

If the usb Disk is in the USB slot, it will allow you to change from A:
to F: or what ever the drive leter is. Once you have changed it it will
then choose that drive each time. As you have not had a USB dirve,
remember to "Safely remove the drive" so that it will finish the write
and not corrupt the drive.

I insert the drive when it reminds me that it is time to back up to Floppy.

Thank you

I got one and it works great, much better than two floppies.

BTW how do you safely remove the drive, I just put it in when it says back
up to floppy , and check drive f, and take it out when its done????

It depends on the operating system and system settings. In WinXP, these can
be set to not delay write and you can take the out anytime.

Otherwise, note the icon in the systray for Unplug or Eject hardware. Click
on it.

I leave one plugged in for convenience.

I have another I plug in occasionally. I plug the drive in and
remove it with the power on. From a data safety point of view,
alternating them would make some sense. I have seen no reports on
failures, but it seems logical they could. I guess I would not want
the only non-harddrive backups plugged in during a thunderstorm.

Bob,

You had mentioned in your original post that your platform is XP.
Don't you have an icon in your system tray to use for safely removing
USB devices? Even if you don't, XP should warn you if you remove your
USB drive without first telling it you want to "safely remove it". If
you get this message, check the option within the message box to add
an icon to your system tray. Then next time you insert your drive,
click on the systray icon before removing it. A popup will open which
permits you to select your USB device and tell it to STOP. Once you
click on this, the system will tell you its OK to remove it safely.
If it tells you its still busy, wait until the light on your device
goes out and try again.

Unless you're already following the above procedure, I don't see how
you can be removing your device safely. If not, please post back with
more info on the device you're using. Thanks.

Regards,
JB

JB

Thanks

Wow, I was doing it wrong.
That little icon is there but it was hidden and I did not see it, I changed
it to display and it does, sure hope I did not ruin the drive already by
not using it.

Thanks again

Bob

Interesting thread. With Windows XP Pro, I don't have the little
system tray thing. The drive shows up as a removable drive in Money
and in Windows Explorer. I assume that XP writes to the drive fairly
quickly, tho I would not want to pull the drive out just after
issuing the write. One of my flash drives has an LED that lights
when the unit is being accessed. I did not see a non-continuous or
delayed access during backing up.

If the OS saw the flash drive as a non-removable drive, I would be
more concerned. But even there I would expect the OS to purge the
write buffers no more than five seconds after the write process
command ended. I tried searching for more discussions on this, but I
did not find info about write-behind on the USB flash drives.
Clearly this is important, and it would be better to err on the safe
side.

I just had a USB flash drive fail. I brought it back with Format.

It was plugged into the built-in hub of my monitor, which I
sometimes power-down. I will give this thing one more chance as I
watch my procedures, but I will supplement it with other backups.

Alternating USB Flash drives will probably be my next backup
strategy modification.

Cal,

Since you had indicated previously that you did not have the tray icon
for drive removal, try creating a shortcut on your desktop with the
following as the target:

%windir%\System32\rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll

This performs the same function as the tray icon removal tool and I
would suggest giving it a try before powering down your monitor's
built-in hub if your PC is not first shutdown.

Not sure if I would worry too much about flash drive failure and your
backup routine. If you're using your USB drive on a regular basis, I
doubt a bad backup media and corrupted Money file would occur
coincidentally. Of course viability of the backed up file is another
matter entirely and a frequent subject of prior threads.

Regards.
JB
