Step 1 is to copy the file to the hard disk and assure that it's not set to
read-only from Windows Explorer file properties.
Also, why not just move the .MNY file directly from the old machine to the
new? Why backup the try to restore if you can burn a CD on the old machine?
It saves the entire backup/restore process.
Also, if you reinstalled M98, did you reinstall all of the patches (Internet
Updates)??? This may be hard as I think it has been reported here that
Microsoft has pulled them off the servers.
Also see
http://www.bollar.org/msmoney/#Q72.
Also, it defeats me why you'd spend ten minutes trying to make M98 work on a
new machine. It was the single buggiest version of Money ever by a long
margin. M04 is $20 or less with careful shopping.
(That having been said, all too many users are having upgrade problems for
back-level data files. I'd certainly try your data file with the
downloadable M04 trial version, available at
http://www.microsoft.com/money,
first to see what you are up against. If you go this route: a) Read and Heed
the warnings about the file upgrade process and non-revertability of an
upgrade file, and b) do not upgrade from the trial to the licensed version
on-line. Go buy the CD and save yourself a ton of hassle.)
