I'm using the trial version of money deluxe 04 and have just gone through
the payee list and aggregated multiple listing say a gas station like shell
oil, shell tahoe city, shell whatever to all be just Shell. In doing so, I
assume that all categorization for each transaction would not be altered if
the payee name is changed. For example some of most of these gas purchases
would be categorized as automobile: gas but some as vacation: travel. Does
this make sense? COuld someone confirm this?

thx!

You should be able to Rename any of your payees in the
Details area. Select the desired Payee in the list of
Payees and click the Rename icon in the upper left.

I find that naming all the different Shell gas stations to
simply Shell minimizes the number of payees. Of course if
you really want to track which Shell station you purchase
from, you'll need to list them separately.

Renaming the Payee should have no impact on your category
selections for each charge. Having gasoline purchases
under an Automobile category and another under a Vacation
category makes perfect sense to me (or at least that's how
I track it).

related question - could someone add their wisdom to categorizing deep
details like gas stations. Instead of having multiple payees named like
shell - uptown, shell - downtown, amaco - over here, texaco - over
there

i am considering wiping out the details and creating one payee called
"gas station"

has anyone had success with this or wished they wouldn't have or found
a need to track by particular gas station...

I've always tracked them by company, ie Shell, Texaco, Esso etc.
