no version of MONEY i have ever used has allowed me to
show a negative balance in an investment account, e.g., a
money market fund that has checkwriting privileges. Money
does permit negative balances in "regular" (checking)
accounts. am i doing something wrong?

If I understand your problem...

The moneymarket account should be setup as an investment account with a =
linked cash account.
Write your checks in the cash account (which can go negative).
When the checks clear and shares in the money market account are sold to =
cover the checks, transfer the proceeds from the sale to the cash =
account to cover the checks.=20
