Cal,
I did download a trial version of AMPR from Elcomsoft
that would give the first 3 charecters of a password. My
husband has Money 2002 but won't be home with his laptop
for a few days, so I tired AMPR first.
Earlier, when I tried to restore the Money account from
floppy I had 2 differant files that I tried to use, both
were .mbf files. One came up as unknown format, the other
finally loaded to the point that I needed a password to
complete the restore. After several attempts, I finally
got one file to read .mny in my documents. I ran a check
with AMPR on all of those files, and the one with the .mny
was the only one that AMPR didn't call an invalid format.
Here is how I got to a file that AMPR would "open". At
the top of the AMPR window, I opened the My Documents
folder. I did not see any of the files under supported
files in my documents, so I used all files for the search.
The .mny file was in "all files" , it opened in AMPR and
a small window came up that said Password for Selected
File and beneath it Password Hexadecimal Representation.
Both lines beneath those headings were empty, and when I
clicked to send results it to clipboard viewer nothing was
there either.
It is possible that I have not used AMPR correctly. But,
since I don't recall ever using a password to start with,
I was wondering if that is why AMPR did not show anything
in either line of the password window.
I hope that I have relayed my efforts in terms clear
enough for you to have an idea of the steps I have taken
thus far. I would appreciate any comments you might have
on the results I have obtained with AMPR.
Again, thanks for you help with this issue.

I have not used any of those "password recovery" programs myself. I
do recall one saying that the program said what version of Money
file it was dealing with.

If it were me, I would see if Money 2004 can deal with the files.

Cal,
I did try another trial version of password detection,
this time from www.lostpassword.com. The results were no
password found. so, it seems that the olny chance left is
trying to open it in Money 2002. I will post again with my
results.
thanks for helping me.
