    - Money 2005: Can't Get Support I tried to open an on-line ticket for the upgrade problems I am having (2004-->2005), but the Microsoft site says "The Product ID number you entered is not supported in the country that you have selected. You may go back and choose another country or enter another Product ID number." I'm in the US. I selected "United States" and I purchased by d/l direct from Microsoft. BTW: Trying to report: 1) Cannot restore a backup unless I am connected to the internet. 2) When I started 2005, it converted from 2004 but lost quite a few transactions. 3) The first time the s/w "updated" my accounts from the internet, it: a) Duplicated many transactions in several accounts; b) Made some of the duplicated deposits show as withdrawals; c) Incorrectly applied additional splits to some stocks; d) Created accounts with #1 and #2 appended; e) Repeated application of a recurring bill. Possibly more that I did not notice. Item 1 makes it difficult to go back and look at the "pre-update" snapshoot on this laptop, since it is not convenient to connect it to the internet.     - Incorrect dept in budget plan When I create a new budget plan the stated dept is always much higher in the current month. I have gone and reset the dept reduction plan via tools/options/planner however when viewing the current month the budgeted dept is always much higher than what it actually is supposed to be.     - M2005- Updates are temporarily unavailable I have been getting this error since upgrading from M2004 on Friday. I've read through the group and it appears there are several different types of synchronization errors that folks are experiencing. I have tried removing all of my accounts from Moneycentral and the re-adding them, but after saying I'm not updating online, I continually see the Updates are temporarily unavailable message under the MSN Money Synchronization.     - Money2005 - Still Buggy I had a very nasty bug with my budget in MS Money 2004 that I hoped would be fixed in 2005 but it still exists. Some of the items in my budget show up with values in the "Budgeted" column that are WAY off (%150). For example, if I tell the budget that I expect $3400 twice a week for "Grossly Income", one month the budget will tell me I've budgeted $6800 for Grossly Income, which is correct, but then another month it will tell me I've budgeted over $10,000?! This happens with several items in the budget. Creating a new budget does not resolve the problem. However, I tested by creating an entirely new money data file and a new budget and this did fix the problem. So, thinking my money file was somehow corrupt I ran the repair tool which then told me there was nothing wrong with the file. Creating a new data file and spending the time to get it all setup again and transfer all of my information from the existing file is not an option. I'm starting to think this software is a scam. Should we really have to pay for a "new version" of MS Money once a year? With each new version I expect significant changes and fixes but each release seems just like the same old program with an overhauled interface - and not always overhauled for the better.     - Budget and transfer question Is there a way to not have transfers show up in the budget? Or perhaps someone give some good advise on how to work around my issue. Typically I have bills taken out of my checking account. This month I needed to pay a usual bill from my credit card. If I note the bill (in this case telephone) correctly being electronically deducted from my visa it will show up (as it should) in it's noted place in the budget. Now, if I transfer the money from my checking account to cover that payment my budget dings me again. So instead of showing that I paid a $50 telephone bill, it also show that I have an additional $50 in dept. Needless to say my expense numbers are now off. Any ideas on how to work around this?     - Problems with Money updates Yes, this problem is WIDESPREAD. No doubt you are either getting a message in your "Call Summary" that either says "Money experienced an error downloading the file SMRTINET.INI" or " An unknown error has occurred. If the problem persists, reinstall Money from the original installation disk" I did so and nothing changed. Since I maintain three separate .mny files, it is occurring on Money updates with all three files, and this same problem is occurring on many different computers with different versions of Money (I have Money 2003 Deluxe and Business), you can rest assured that the problem is with the download from Microsoft itself--it is not a problem with your computer, your version of Money, or your particular installation of Money. By the way, the updates are "working", it's just that an error is occurring of which you are being informed; if they weren't, your Money program wouldn't be informing you that updates were received as of today's date.     - Randowm data corruption Money 2002 Help! I use Money 2002 Deluxe & Business to manage 6 business bank accounts and 2 petty cash accounts. All of a sudden, Money has started to randomly change some of the entries in the petty cash accounts. It changes them in increments of $50, $100, $150 or $200. For example, one entry that was originally $200 on Jan 1, now reads $400. One on 2/2/04 for $70.40 now reads $170.40. Conversely, on 4/17, the amount was $800 and it is $600! There are some 20 such changes that I have detected so far. I am the only one using this program. I can't see any pattern to the changes (payee, amount paid, etc). What is going on?     - Microsoft Money 2002 Seems to be a glich in my computer and it won't install Money. A window keeps popping up stating I need the file Money.MSI and to insert the CD disk. I put in the disk and the same window pops up with the same information. I have tried to delete the program all together and I am not able to. The computer says there is another program running and won't let me do anything. The other program that is running is the installation of Money! I am unable to install or delete any files. Short of wiping out the hard drive and starting all over, are there any suggestions on how to get rid of the Money file that is trying to load? Thanks.     - Multiple monitors I was having issues trying to do updates and the solution I found was to check off basevideo option in boot.ini on the msconfig panel. Well you can imagine this would be a pain to do being you have to reboot everytime you do this plus it disables my other 2 monitors. Anyone know a fix for this?     - Previously Postponed Balancing this account message I have received the following error message when attempting to balance an account. If anyone knows how to get beyond it I would be forever grateful. "You have previously postponed balancing this account. If you entered a service charge or interest amount last time, you can't change them from here. You can change them later in the Account Book window." When in Balance General Account I am asked to enter statement date, beginning balance, ending balance, a service charge amount, as well as interest earned amount. However the interest earned amount has prefilled data ALC<402c> and when I attempt to continue I receive this message. "'ALC<402c>' is an invalid amount.     - NOT Impressed with Money 2005 Just updated from Money 2003 Deluxe & Business to Money 2005 Small Business. Can't find any improvements worth having (for my operation), but lots of backward steps. The interface is glitchy ... sometimes it works, sometimes I get odd errors that look almost like an internet failure. Sometimes even the help menu won't start. Features I've hoped to see over the years still aren't there. It seemed to convert my old money file with no problems, but I've had to abandon online updates. I have multiple money files (personal, business 1, business 2,etc) and at each banking institution I have a single online id that accesses all accounts. With this new "improvement", you can no long select the accounts you want to download into a money file. It hits the bank and downloads all of them. In one case, I have 7 accounts at an institution and it downloads all seven of them into each money file. The balance sheet looks great, but its a LIE. A MAJOR MAJOR backward step. Makes Quicken look more promising all the time. I saw an article in the Wall Street Journal last week (section II, front page) that pretty much said "Buy Apple ...     - 2005: Update from 2004 totally messed up When I installed 2005, I let Money update/import my 2004 files. The result is now a totally worthless product. 1. Bill Payment: What were monthly re-occurring bills are now Twice a Month. 2. Bill Payment: Previously deleted re-occurring bills have reappeared. 3. Categories: Money now re-created every category as <Category>-#1. Now I have the original plus the new one. 4. Import of accounts which had a starting balance did not import the starting balance. Now, all my accounts are negative and my net-worth has gone down significantly. I am back to using Money 2004 and seriously eyeing that Quicken package in the store.     - Invoice Designer portrait/landscape problems I'm using Money 2004 Small Business edition with winXP. I go into Invoice Designer and open the template 'Service Portrait 1 (Logo)'. This opens, and gives me nearly enough to the invoice layout I would want subject to a few minor alterations. If I then save this template as a new template (with or without any alterations), open the invoice feature within Money and select this new template as the one I want to use, the print preview gives me a landscape orientation of this invoice. It also prints as landscape. (Choosing the original 'Service Portrait 1 (Logo)' template does result in a portrait orientation). I have tried going into the printer setup selections both within Money and within Windows to ensure that the printer is set to portrait mode, and reset this. That makes no difference. Still get landscape. Anyone come across this quirk? Anyone know of a fix?     - Money 2004 - Bills/Deposits entered from Autobudget not showing up in Budget Current Status screen In the past, I've been all for Autobudget, but for some reason it's totally screwing me up now. I've just set up a new budget (finally getting organized), and autobudget did it's thing and pre-populated most categories. I made changes where necessary, and when finished it took me to the "Review your current budget status" screen. I was very surprised to be over budget in almost EVERY category that Autobudget touched. It seems that every single item that was pulled from the Bills/Deposits screen with a red icon (i'm guessing these are withdrawals...that's what they all look like to me) is showing up the budget, but is not showing up under the "budgeted" column in the "current status" screen. So here's an example (yes, fake numbers) On Budgeting Expense screen: Car Payment: Car 1: 50.00 Car 2: 100.00 Other Car Payment: 0.00 Subtotal: 150.00 The 150 does get added to the expense total. Now, when looking at the current status screen, it says that Car Payment has an Actual spend of 150.00 but a budgeted amount of 0.00, thereby putting me over budget. WTF?!? After playing around, I tried to change the "Other Car Payment" amount to the 150, and sure enough, it pulled the Car Payment category from the Expenses over budgeted limits section. unfortunately, this makes the subtotal 300.00 above, which messes up the entire budget. i tried removing the two car payments garnered from bills/deposits (autobudget), but they won't remove. i deleted the category, hoping to add it back empty, but when i added it back, it repopulated them.     - MSN Money web site Help... I can't get my current 2005 money file to syncronize with MSN. I used to use passport with Money 2004, but stopped. Now that I have 2005. There are some feature that I want to use. For some reason it walks me through the prosses of saying DELETE my old MSN Money Website data. But it never does. It just come back on the next login and say i am using the wrong file. I can't find anywhere on the web to reset this. I submitted it to microsoft support. Does anyone here have any ideas?     - Buying M04 Dlx at close out $ just for the two-year MSN Bill Pay? M04 Deluxe came with two years of MSN Bill Pay included. And, I believe the expiration dates on the box stated the offer is good through Sep XX, 2006 (looks like they keep a three year window: end of product sales cycle, plus two years). So, I had this idea: If you see M04 Dlx anywhere for say, $20, it's a bargain if only for the two-years of prepaid MSN Bill Pay, (I recall that was the higher end MSN Bill Pay, @6.99/month * 24 months = ~ $167). But, if you want to use M05 or later versions (the whole point here being you buy M04 only for the prepaid MSN BP), this needs to work also: Can you open the M04 box, create whatever minimal accounts necessary, sign up for the MSN BP service, only to take that sign up and get it to work with your M05 installation?     - Font sizes are microscopic The font sizes in MS Money 2005 are microscopic on my screen (i.e. I can't read any text in the program unless I put my face three inches in front of the screen)! I use a 21" monitor at 1600x1200 resolution. I looked through all the options but found no place to change the font size or font family. I just read in the FAQ and in an MS Support page that this appears to be by design. Lowering my display resolution or using the "Large Fonts" setting in Display Properties are unacceptable "solutions" for me. This behavior of MS Money is unbelievable to me. Does MS think that no one uses display resolutions above 1024x768? And it seems ironic to me that MS Money has a web-browser- like user interface. One of the fundamental benefits of using web browsers is supposed to be "display independence". That is, each user should (at least) be able to change the font size to match his computing device (whether it be a desktop or a PDA). According to the MS Support page, MS Money has had this limitation for several years. I am just so completely shocked that a modern application like this written by Microsoft provides no good way for people to adjust the font sizes. I've been using Quicken for nine years. With the credit card acct. I can specify the categories of purchases for budget & reporting purposes, but what do I put on the chequing account for my credit card payment?     - My personal pet peeves review Having been a money user since early 1999 here's what I'm seeing: 1. It's turned into IE on steiroids. What was a clean, easy to use interface has become confusing, complicated, etc.. based interface that seems to try and blend the application and the web, and doesn't do either very well. Finding various settings has become quite a chore, as it seems to lead you round in circles between the app, the web and back again. 2. Online services - nightmare..... Half of them aren't working correctly. Upgrade process produces a upgrade document suggesting that steps must be taken to ensure proper online usage. Contacting the support resources as indicated in the document - no joy. They have no idea what you're talking about bounce you to other resources who don't know what you're talking about and in the end, you end up not knowing if you're configured correctly or not. 3. Bill pay - worse nightmare. As someone who's been happily paying bills via Money since 99 through Checkfee (apparently now MSN Bill Pay - and yes I know back in the 90's it wasn't checkfree), Money keeps wanting me to disable this service so that it can somehow synchronize it's data with the web (not working), and claims that it will be re-enabled afterwards (its not). 4. Account setup - Any attempts to add/update accounts to do online services leads you through the same loop (see above). Worse, if you're willing to disable the service as instructed and then attempt to online enable an account you get the "unavailable try again later" spiel. 4. Links don't work... Various links such as "Access my money data on the web", experian plus score and/or credit report links in the reminders/credit section don't work. Nor does it provide an appropriate error message indicating what to do (apparently you need to disable bill payment services, somehow get money synchronization to work - which doesn't - and then somehow get bill payment to work again and then these links will apparently work again)... I'm so peeved at this upgrade I can't even begin to express it all... Several calls to PSS have been fruitless, frustrating and downright insulting of my intelligence. I get someone who A) doesn't speak english B) clearly has NO EXPERIENCE with the product in question C) has NO IDEA what I'm talking about and D) has the temerity to suggest that Money 2005 is not a valid active product and tries to quickly blow me off by suggesting I try the web site and/or pay for an incident and then suggests that I contact my "local administrator" when I question her about her statements. When I insist on speaking with a supervisor they finally assign a case number and when I finally get through to an "engineer" with a case number assigned (who I suspect is not an engineer at all), she A) doesn't speak english much better than the first one, B) doesn't appear to know anything more than the first one and C) calls me back but doesn't appear to have kept her callbacks straight as she is asking for someone other than myself by name and D) finally tells me she can't help me and that it needs to go to someone who actually knows what's going on (i.e. outside of India).... About the only positive thing I can claim is the support resources I've spoken to were polite and actually tried to repeat back the nature of my issue to me (got it wrong two out of three tries though).     - Money 2005 "additional progam files are being downloaded"...NOT I keep getting this message every time I launch money (even after leaving Money up and running overnight on my cable modem).     - Money 05 OFX import? I just got MS Money 2005. The OFX import from my bank, which used to work fine in Money 2002 is now broken. When I try to import the OFX, Money 2005 tells me: The file you attempted to import appears to be invalid or contains corrupt data. Please download the file again. If the problem continues, contact your financial institution.     - One more M05 peeve and stuff What's with the account list masking off all but the last four digits of account numbers with X's? I mean, seriously, this is just beyond whacko. It's better Security Theater than the TSA show at your neighborhood airport. The account number is one r-click "See account settings" away. Whatever could be the point of hiding it on this screen? Who are we hiding it from? The application is trying to encourage shipping financial data all over the web at all times of the day and night in the name of "Essential" function and "most users prefer" and here on the Account List it tries to hide my account numbers from, ahem, me? Microsoft has added the whole yodlee loop to handling people's financial data and here they want to get cutesy about hiding account numbers? What a joke. Who derived the requirements for this upgrade? Daffy Duck? Anybody else notice Charles and Amy using the PowerBook in the screen for setting up Tools|Settings|Sharing? Does this mean that Money for the Mac is coming? (Of course, why this settings screen among all of the others in the random walk we now call Tools|Options needs a pretty little picture is another interesting question.) BTW, for those of you who are curious what the Fact Sheet meant when it said "New Multiuser access. Now the primary Money user can allow another person to view, monitor and manage the same Microsoft Money file from different locations without sharing passwords.", I can answer that question. Hint: it doesn't mean what it says. What it really means, apparently, is that multiple Passport users can get associated with your Sync With the Web account. I think Microsoft is INTENTIONALLY trying to mask or downplay the interaction of this version with the web. I think they are betting that high negative reactions to the question "I want my financial data scattered all over the web" can be overcome by soft-pedaling what lots of these features actually do and I think they are betting that the same users who are paranoid about security and privacy will be too ill-informed and too lazy to really figure out what they this thing really does under the covers. I'm sure Microsoft would say that all of this is explained one place or another in the application, and they probably are correct. But any long time newsgroup reader knows that even things like the file upgrade dialogs about revertability and the .Mnn file and so forth are at best not understood and, more typically, not even noticed or remembered. BTW, I'm still searching for "Enhanced Spending Analysis. This powerful feature automatically generates a pie chart of expense categories over various time frames, and shows dollar amounts and percentage breakouts for each area. With the new Spending Average, people can view a monthly dollar average for spending per category based on past account data." I found a pie chart in reports.Maybe this is the one they were talking about? Where these averages are remains a mystery.     - Essential Account view/duplicate accounts?? Just upgraded to Money 2005 (from 04) and I now have four credit card accounts instead of two. After calling MS tech support I was told that the reason I have four accounts instead of two is; two have the new Essential Account Register view and two have the Advanced Account Register view. This is dumb. Why does it show you the different views as duplicate accounts? It makes it look like you have more accounts then you really do. It even calls them a different name of the original accounts... Anyone experience this strange function??? Very disappointed as this feature doesn't make sense!     - Experian Service downgraded? I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but it seems that the credit monitoring functions have been severely downgraded since the release of M05. The way it used to work: When you log in to Experian (via the link in Money) you could view your "Plus Score" AND your credit report for FREE. The way it works now: When you log in to Experian (via the link in Money) you could view your "Plus Score" for free, but if you want to view the details of your credit report then you have to pat $9.95 each time. At first I thought this was a "feature" of M05, but on checking the archived reports it appears this behavior began on 9/16/2004, and I didn't install M05 until 9/17. I perform this task from both TIAA-CREF and Fidelity. The first using
the QIF file provided on their web site and the second using the direct
connection in Money 2005 (although the direct connection in 2004 also
worked for 3 out of 4 of my accounts). So in general it works. What
version of Money, what have you tried, and what is your brokerage?
