In a previous post someone asked about adding / modifying category groups.
The respondent referred to http://money.mvps.org/faq/article/69.aspx

which said

"Category groups are used for internal parts of the program only"

My question is then "Why do I care?" In an effort to simplify the
Category/Subcategory/Budget Category/Category Group/Tax
Category/Classification puzzle, can I just point every category to "Other
Income" and "Other Expense" Category Groups? What would I lose?

You might be talking about something different. I'm talking about the
Category Group drop-down that's on the category modify screen. It starts
with Alimony Expenses, and ends with Water & Sewer Bill. I don't see where
these groups come into play in reporting, or anywhere else.

Any takers?

Dave

Categories are all over reporting, e.g Income and Spending. Getting rid of
categories, in my opinion, severely restricts a major purpose of Money;
knowing where and how your money is being used. You can get rid of
categories you will never use though... I am not married so I don't really
need 'Alimony'.

Well, you can't get rid of them. I normally just ignore them - but you have
alerted me to the issue that I really ought to find out exactly where they
are used, as there does seem to be a lot of things grouping transactions
now...

No, I understand what you're talking about. There are two types, but
generally, category groups as you're thinking of them are only used in
Advisor FYI and Monthly Reports, that I can recall. It used to be more
obvious, becuase in 04 and earlier (I believe), there were charts available
on the main page with info on automobile expenses.

The other type are used to assign categories to tax lines.

Ok, I see what you're talking about. If I look at my Home Page using the
"House" view, it lists

Household Expenses: Groceries
Insurance: Homeowner's/Renters.
etc.

So it looks like these Groups are not "parents" of Categories, but an
alternate way of grouping categories. Good to know.
