2006 file invlink.xml prevents web access

Money 2006, windowsXPSP2

Basic problem is that any attempt to go to the network by clicking on
various buttons doesn't work.
(e.g.) in money home page clicking on 'investing' 'planning' or 'taxes'
doesn't work.

The links WILL work if the file invlink.xml is removed!
(C:documents & settings\my-name\local settings\application
data\microsoft\money\15.0\webcache\invlink.xml)
There is nothing obviously wrong about this file it is dated 8/31 and
appears to have been come from invlink.cab.

Looking at norton's log files it appears that an attempt was made the first
click (i.e. on 'investor) to connect to http://g.msn.com
as seems to be what most of the 'links' items point to in invlink.xml. but
nothing else happens.
After that first click subsequent clicks on various buttons that should go
to the web do not create additional attempt in norton's log.

Also note that if I remove the directory (or just its contents) webcache -
the first time I use money it works correctly and reloads the webcache.
Then after I close money and open again I once again cannot use external
links until I remove the invlink.xml file.

What funny stuff can I have set up in my windows that would inhibit the xml
file from functioning?

any help appreciated
(p.s. disabling norton did not help,
second laptop computer going thru my router/dsl does work so don't think it
is in the firewall of the router,
windows firewall is off)

I don't know what disabling Norton does. Some have reported things
working after uninstalling Norton that did not work when Norton was
disabled. I don't know if that would be the case for you.

I may try that although I hate to be 'naked' to the net for very long.
Current plan is to hope someone has a solution, if not then tomorrow I
reinstall windows XP from scratch (It has lasted from Jan 2001)
to get rid of all the detritus that has accumulated, maybe this is a good
excuse.

I think that, besides having your XP critical updates up-to-date,
that a home gateway (NAT router) does wonders. Having a "router"
with only one computer may seem silly to some, but not to me. That
won't protect you against your launching email attachments tho. And
I guess I would suggest sticking to trusted web sites while 'naked',
unless you tighten up your browser settings.

Perhaps it is time for a new hard drive too. That would guard
against unforeseen consequences. Big drives are showing up with low
sale prices.

And if your XP is before SP2, having that router guarding the
computer would be important, IMO, until you get SP2 and critical
updates.

My router/DSL/wireless is from verizon and contains what appears to be a
good firewall. Actually the firewall in Norton's never sees any attacks,
they are blocked by the hardware (the log in the router/dsl is chock a
block full of attacks).
So I won't quite be 'naked' but I am paranoid!

My XP is prior to SP2 but I also have the SP2 CD so can get there before I
connect back to the web.

Cal,
Perhaps I could impose on you for another tip?

I bought a nice big external USB2 drive for the purpose of backing up the C:
drive for protection till I get XP reinstalled and am sure it is working.
However I find I am to stupid to figure out how to do that! Trying the
straight forward was of creating a directory in the USB drive (H) called
backup,
then selecting all in the c:\ root then dragging to the H:\backup directory.
That failed as it got to files in use (ntuser).
So tried to use recover console from the XP installation CD. Turns out its
copy will not honor wildcards and will not write to a removable disk.

Any easy way to get the entire contents of C: onto a external USB drive?

Programs such as Norton's Ghost will do this, but have you tried the backup
utility in Windows XP?

I ended up using Backup MyPC from Roxio, It is taking hours but will feel
safe when I say OK to the format question!.

(I also removed all of Norton, had no effect on my original problem.)

There are imaging programs. However if I were going to try to copy
files like that, I would try Ctrl+A to select all of the folders in
C: Windows Explorer and do a Ctrl+C, and I would paste into the
H:\backup folder.

Thanks all for support.
I backed everything to my external USB with a backup program, partioned and
formated, reinstalled, applied sp2 updated with all the patches and
reinstalled firewall and virus checker. Installed Money 2006 and
it works just fine - only 15 hours of work. Now to get the rest of my
software installed. Time for bed.
