How change stock/co. name in Money '02?

I use Money '02 on Win XP.(I haven't upgraded to a later version because my
understanding is that the later versions are more closely tied to MSN Money,
which is NOT something I desire.)

One of the stocks/companies I own has undergone a name change, from Duke
Power to Spectrum Energy. So when I download my holdings info from my
brokerage site, Money says 'Add 100 shares Spectrum Energy.' But I don't want
to add those shares, not unless I can show that they are the Duke Power I
bought a couple of years ago, with all that Duke history carrying over to
Spectrum. I looked online help and on the web. Couldn't find how to do this
in Money. Your suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

When you first downloaded that, Money would have asked you if you
hold that under another name. You should have said it was held as
Duke.

Then you could have changed names by going to the investment details
for Duke.

At this point, if things are what I expect, it is complex to make
the change for downloads. The easiest way is to restore a backup
from before you first downloaded the reference to Spectrum.

Even if you have such a backup file, it can be tricky. So before
discussing what might happen then, do you have such a backup file
that you could restore?

If not, reconsider your backup policy, and post back with that info.

This transaction occurred Jan. 3, 07. I have backups later in Jan. (which
won't do any good) and then my previous backup before that is May 06.

So would prefer to hear how to make the change w/o a backup.

Fortunately you have the motivation to review your backup strategy
before something more problematic occurs. Also ask yourself what

OK. Let me give you a rundown, to see if you are still interested.

Right now you have two stocks -- Duke
Power and Spectrum Energy. You will want to rename the current
Spectrum Energy to something you will never want to use (such as
zzzz), blank the symbol, and perhaps get rid of it. Then you will
rename the old Duke, with the transaction history, to Spectrum
Energy and change the symbol to the Spectrum Energy symbol. That is
fairly straight-forward stuff.

The problem comes in that when you download next time, the OFX file
will associate the real stock with zzzz. This is due to a hidden
number called the CUSIP. So here is the procedure to disassociate
the new CUSIP from zzzz so that you can then tell Money that it is
now same stock that you have been tracking.

Keep extra backups/copies of your file in case you want to undo
something.

Here is a procedure:

======Disassociate Stock from Money Download===================

The purpose of this is disassociate a security from the download
process. The problem this cures is that Money associates
downloaded stock by CUSIP. Renaming and/or changing the symbol is
not sufficient to appear as a different security.

Create dis_sk.ofx by cutting and pasting the portions between the
Begin and End lines (below) into a file named dis_sk.ofx.

I suggest making an extra copy of your Money file as a precaution.

File->Import dis_sk.ofx into Money

Select the appropriate Account from the list.

Select the institution as the actual institution that holds the
account.

You should get the "You have n statements to read" screen. The
account you just imported into should show the name account name
followed by (1). Click that name.

You should get the pop-up that says "Money found the following
investment in your brokerage statement:".

Select "This investment is already in my investment portfolio with
a different name. I use the following investment in my investment
portfolio to track this investment:". From the drop-down list,
choose the stock you are trying to get rid of. Click Next. When
you get the "Are you sure xxxxx is the same investment as yyyy?",
click Yes.

If you get the screen that says "Do you want to change the ticker
symbol for xxxx in Money from yyyy to zzzz to match the statement,
I suggest you click Yes.

Get the screen that says "The positions reported on nn/nn/nn
statement don't match those in you Money account. Do you want to
update your account to match the statement?". I would select No,
but it is up to you. Click Finish.

Now download from your broker for real.

Feel free to suggest improvements to this procedure.

Thanks, I'll try it tonight.

I think you misunderstood about my backup policy. I do daily backups so I'm
fine if my drive crashes tomorrow. It's when I want to go back 4 weeks for
something that's been written over in all those daily backups, then I'm in
trouble -- having to go back to whenever I last did a full backup.

Actually, in one sense, I don't yet have Spectrum. It's not shown in my
holdings for this acct. That's because in the
"Review investment activity' screen for this account"
I never clicked" 'Next' to update Money to this statement"
where it has the 1/3/2007 activity to Add Shares for Spectra Energy Corps.

So should I still do what you suggest??

If Money asked you if this was already in your account under another
name, and you said no-- its new, I think it got added to where it
matters for this purpose.
