I have M-2004, and now I remember why I hate it so much. After the first
few frustrating weeks I abandoned trying to do invoicing and
bookkeeping, and have only used it for investment tracking since.

And it is barely able to do that.

I've tried and clicked and poked and prodded, but I cannot figure out
how to edit the "Category" of any particular fund that I hold. Right
click, left click, tools/options, "see details," nothing nothing.

HELP??????????????

By "category" do you mean asset allocation? It is what Money thinks it is.
You can't fix/improve it.

Thanx for the reply Dick. Oops, I shoulda been more specific.

Under "Asset Allocation" view, as I have it set up, the column titles
are "Symbol, Name, Category, Market Value . . . "

It's the "Category" in specific funds that I want to change, as in
"Large Cap," "Mid Cap," "Bond," etc.

Yes, with limits, you can change the category. Right click the investment,
choose "See Details," then "Asset Class" at bottom of box.

All I have there is "Change Asset Allocation," which isn't what I'm
after.

I'll try clarifying it a bit.

Under the "category" column, I have some funds that say "Large Cap,"
"Mid Cap," etc. And a few funds are blank.

I would like to edit the categories (example: XYZ Fund now says "Mid
Cap," want to change it to "Growth and Income," etc.) or add a type to
the ones that are blank.

Thanks!

I'm (almost) certain the list of choices is fixed. You can assign a class
(from the fixed list of "Small-caps", "Mid-caps", "Large-caps", "Bonds",
"Cash", and "Other") to a fund Money can't classify. But you can't create a
classification for "Makes Lots of Money" if you don't like the choices
"Small-caps", "Mid-caps", "Large-caps", "Bonds", "Cash", and "Other". But
don't take my word for it. Hopefully we'll get another second opinion.

OK, I see. You are trying to change the asset class of mutual funds. I'm
afraid that Dick Watson's first answer was the correct one. Asset class
categories can be changed for stocks and bonds, not for mutual funds, at
least for M2004.

It's actually worse than that. In the "Details" screen for mutual funds
there is a "Change Asset Allocation" button that appears to let you divide a
mutual fund among various asset classes. However, any information you enter
is not accessible in reports and is not reflected in the Category of the
investment. Furthermore, when you Update Prices Online, any asset class
divisions that you manually enter will be replaced with different values.
These new values will not reflect reality for the mutual fund and usually
don't even add up to 100%. This whole functionality is broken in M2004. I
havenâ??t checked M2007 but will be loading it shortly.

Dick Watson,
This is a common enough question that it should be in the FAQs. I know that
you are busy and way behind with updating those. I would be willing to do a
write-up and send it to you. Email me at Michel&le*and*Bill*@*G()mail.com
(where you should remove all the non-letter characters) if that would be a
help to you.

Re: How to change investment "Category" ?? by Bruce

Bruce

Guys: I found a work-around, which is actually a pretty ridiculous thing
to have to do. Forget all the bells and whistles (which Money is loaded
with), just give me basic editing functions for AT LEAST the simple
things, like this.

Anyway, I right click a fund, go to "See Details," and in the "Comments"
box I typed "Growth," "Bond," etc. Then I edited the columns, adding
"Memo."

Thanks for your help!

Bruce
