Hello. I am looking for a way to track my employers vesting dollars in
my 401k account. They match the usual 6%, and this company matching is
vested over 3 years. My company buys their own stock with these
matching dollars, and as my time in the company increases, I gain
access to those dollars.

I am 1+ year at the company, which means that I am now 34% vested in
my employers matching account. How can you set up an investment in
Money 2004 to show this? This is legit money that is included in my
overall 401k balance, but I cannot figure out how to handle this in
Money.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Accounting for the match money and associated investments is easy. See
http://umpmfaq.info./faqdb.php?q=14.

Tracking the vesting schedule is a harder thing. There is no straightforward
way to do track this in Money. (One of these days I'll think of something
that's approximate the effect.) Most people just ignore this effect until
they have to exercise it.

Since most company's force a vesting period onto their
contributions lack of support on MS's part is
unacceptable. While using the "ignore it approach" forced
on us under the current version what good are any of the
asset reports?

Unacceptable or not, it's what's there. As to the validity of the asset
reports, you can either mentally compensate or just not track the unvested
match money at all. Maybe you need two 401K accounts, the vested one and the
unvested one and transfer from one to the other as it vests? As noted, there
is not a good solution to this and every one involves compromise on the
user's part.

That's exactly what I do - I have one account for my contributions, and one
for my employer's. In the employer acc't, for the first year there's a cash
debit reducing the value to zero - after one complete year, there's an
offset credit for that year's vesting, and so on. It's not exact as values
fluctuate, but I update it approx monthly, and it does have the advantage of
not being wildly off in terms of holdings for overall planning amounts.
