I would like to know why nobody contact me from MS to let
me know that the solution was available. I had to go to

When I call to report the problem (3 times) I've told that
MS would contact me via phone or e-mail.

Importing from Excel?
I have a simple home-brew system on an Excel worksheet,
and I want to convert it to Microsoft Money. There are
about 200-300 transactions in my Excel worksheet.
Is there a way to import these transactions into Money? Tag: Support site updated Tag: 171692
Backup Strategy Suggestions
If you have not done so, this would be a good time to review your
backup strategy.
In Tools->Options->Backup I suggest checking
x Automatically backup to hard disk on exit
x Prompt me before backing up each time*
x Make my file small ...
Then periodically, perhaps once per month or more, copy your
latest backup (named differently from your earlier backups) to a
CDR. With XP, this can be a copy and paste operation. Otherwise
use the burning software that came with your CDR drive.
I suggest use of a USB Flash drive also. They typically act like a
big floppy. Even a 32 MB drive is big enough to be useful.
Glyn Simpson describes a more sophisticated automated method here:
http://www.mvps.org/money/backup.htm
* This has two advantages. You can change the file name
occasionally. I like to pick a name something like money040728.
Then it is easy to change the name to have multiple backups. The
.mbf extension is automatic. The other advantage is that you can
choose "Don't Back Up, or you change your mind about exiting by
simply clicking the X in the upper right of the pop-up box. Tag: Support site updated Tag: 171688

THANK YOU RUSS
Russ and the Money Team - thank you very much for the
fix. It worked well and quickly for me.
Please, please work with Microsoft to come up with a
better system for communicating with its customers in
real-time when issues of this or even lesser magnitude
arise. The whole frustration with this issue was the
small amount of communication and the long lag time
between posts. People like to be assured that someone is
working on their problem, even hourly, even if there is
no progress. We know you are human and appreciate the
effort. A little more communication could have gone a
long way to alleviate the frustrations.
Thanks again. Tag: Support site updated Tag: 171676
Problem importing statement
I've imported my bank statements before, but now it
imports it just fine and I see the number of transactions
I need to review. Then, almost instantly, I get a message
that there was a problem saving the file...then the
imported statement disappears.
I receive the message that I'll need to save the file, but
the imported file isn't a choice to "rename" it. That's
when I receive the "problem" message.
I need to get this working ASAP, or I'll have to give up
and go back to manually keeping my checkbook.

it with caps in the subject. It was easy to miss before. This was posted

Redmond, July 18, 2004, 22:00 PDT
I'm sorry that this post is so late, and I know that folks are frustrated
with the lack of communication. We have been on the verge of good news all
afternoon (and evening), and it is here.
I'm happy to announce that we have published a solution to the sign-in
problem. Users that have been unable to use the passwords or work with their
files offline should follow the directions at:
http://sync.money.msn.com/help/pss/w1.asp
I know that there are additional questions, which I have answered below.
Q1: What happened with our passwords?
A1: On Monday, one of our servers was updated and inadvertently
pointed to the wrong location to verify authentication. The authentication
process worked perfectly - we caused the problem by looking in the wrong
server location. This mistake only affected Money services. (If you think of
your login information as a key, and our servers as a lock, then we changed
the lock on the safe, and the old key wouldn't work anymore. There is no way
for the user [or anybody else] to create working login information. The good
news is that nobody could open the local file because of this mistake at any
time; your information is still protected.)
We corrected the "wrong server location" problem Tuesday morning, and users
who did not login between late Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning should
be able to use their files normally.
Those who were affected may continue to be affected, however, since Money
downloaded some of the garbled information from our servers. (Basically, we
made a copy of the lock on your local file. Why did we do this? Because when
you change the lock yourself, you don't want the old key to continue working
on your local file. You also wouldn't want there to be an easy way for
somebody on your machine to ignore the change in the locks. Of course, we
will look at this scenario to see if we could solve it without decreasing
security in the future.)
This situation has not caused any violation of our users'
privacy, and our online services have continued to be available.
Q2: How does the fix work?
A2: We have carefully recreated the incorrect environment of Monday
evening and a Web page to access it. The web page will allow affected users
to login with their current information and recover the lock information
that has locked them out. This will allow them to unlock their file. It is
important to note that users who changed their password should use their new
password, and that no user will be able to access the lock information for
another user.
Again, this solution does not violate our users' privacy. We are
using your login information to restore the lock to your unique key.
Users who have been unable to access their local files should
open a web browser to http://sync.money.msn.com/help/pss/w1.asp and follow
the directions on that page.
Q3: Why did it take so long?
A3: We have addressed the problem in stages. Our first efforts were to
restore the correct configuration of our servers, while preserving the state
they were in for investigation.
Then, we started a careful investigation of the impact on users. Naturally,
we are very careful when dealing with users' login information and follow
strict procedures to protect their privacy.
We have identified three different states that users' files can be in, and
we worked on fixes for all of them. We realize that it was important that
the fix be thorough.
At all times we were working as directly and hard as possible at getting a
solution out to the affected users as soon as possible.
Q4: What if I still can't access my file?
A4: You should send email to mnyngsup@microsoft.com.
Q5: Was this Passport's fault?
A5: No. Passport was working correctly, and always did work for access
to our online services, such as MSN Bill Pay. The issue relates to Money's
server interactions with local Money files.
Q6: Why does Money use Passport for the local file?
A6: We use Passport for a number of web services at Microsoft,
including financial web services that we offer through Microsoft Money.
Since the local file can access these services, the file needs to be
protected as well. For ease of use, we use the same system, Passport, to
protect access to the local file. Users that do not use the web services do
not have to use Passport for the local file.

I'm angry @ money2004 - balance screwed up
Hello,
This is the second time Money 2004 has crashed on my windows XP system.
I did a fresh install of XP and applied all patches & SP1.
Money crashed and my file is now showing incorrect balances in the
account list.
I tried the salv.exe program and it reported no problems.
I had one backup, and money must have written over it, because it too is
bad.
I switched from Quicken and now regret it.
If I cannot resolve this issue, I am dumping Money.
Sorry to vent, but I really do like the program, but am gun shy now.

then reopened, I gained access and my file online was

telling me that a solution is just a click away, nothing

Tomorrow! Tomorrow! Tomorrow!
This is when M$ says a fix will be posted. When is
Tomorrow! Tomorrow! Tomorrow! As you say a fix was posted
in the UK today. Isn't that Tomorrow! Tomorrow! Tomorrow!
in Redmond.
Can't they even fathom the concept of geography and time.
Oh, maybe those files are secured by Passport also. Tag: Support site updated Tag: 171643
Sign In Solution Worked
The fix worked. Many thanks to those who worked long,
late hours on this. There were some intermediate
questions you get asked during the process, such as, "Do
you also want to clear your online banking passwords" (I
said "No", and that seemed to work ok.) It might be
helpful to provide a bit more detail of what to expect,
and guidance on how to answer the questions.
Also, perhaps Microsoft needs to rethink the architecture
of how Passport interacts with Money. Maybe like a
secondary password that would allow at least local access
in case Passport gets garbled again. Tag: Support site updated Tag: 171642
PASSWORD Issue
I cannot get into my Money file. I have been effected by
the problem this week. It appears to have wiped out my
passwords. After I managed to resolve the NET.PASWORD
issue Money 2004 then asked for the file password (it was
protected but was never asked for). I can no longer get
in as the password I thouhgt it was is not valid. I may
have not remembered the password. Now I cannot get my
money information. I have tried system restore and a
previous back up but they all want the passworrd. I have
tried what i think it was but no luck. Can anybody HELP Tag: Support site updated Tag: 171638
I can access my files but there's a problem
I was able to access my money file and restore my backup
from the 26th which was the last day I was able to access
it. Everything is fine except for one strange thing. All
of my balances for all of my accounts are about
$628,743,688,565,700.00. Everywhere that a balance is
shown in the program it has a number that is almost the
same, within $100.00. When I click on the Account List
icon, next to subtotal for my bank accounts and credit
accounts it displays: ##err##. How the heck do I fix
this? All of the information in each account is correct
for deposits and withdrawals, but's it's kind of nice to
know my balances. I have a backup from 1 or 2 weeks ago I
can use, but don't want to lose everything since that
backup. Any help on fixing these screwy balances would be
apprecciated. Tag: Support site updated Tag: 171633
Frustrating problem with adding funds ....
Hi
I have a very strange problem. I am testing the trial
version of Money 2004 and it works great with my job
computer (win XP Pro).
When i tried it with my home coputer (Win XP Home) i have
got a strange problem.
When I add investments "Managed funds" and make
transactions like "buy" and "add shares" I can only enter
quantity and price with whole numbers, like 1, 2, 25, 43
and so on. I can not enter quantity and price with
decimals. For example when i enter a price of 8,20 Money
changes that to 82. When I enter a price of 43,24 (43
dollars and 24 cent)Money 2004 change that to 4,324 but
treats it like 4 thousand 3 hundred 24 dollars.
So the total value that Money sums to is should be
8,20 x 43,24 = 354 dollars 568 cent
Instead I get
82 x 4,324 = 354.568,00 dollars( I am rich !!!!!)
I have no problem with this at my my job computer.
How can I solve this issue ??

budget and investments
Buying funds etc. is treated as an expense from the
budget point of view, since investment accounts are out
of budget. I don't think it is correct.
How do you manage this?
If I save $1000 this month and decide to buy a shares
etc. the budget planner tells me that my expenses are to
high... how can I tell to it that this is NOT an expense?

Money '04 lock out
I'm surprised by the tone of many of these posts--it's as
if people are empathetic with MSFT on this Money fiasco.
There is no doubt here; MSFT really screwed up on multiple
counts, the first not telling us exactly what is going on.
How many of you spent hours trying to logon, search the
MSFT knowledge database for a solution, call up their
service center, etc? For instance, why don't they have a
bulletin on their Money support site explaining what is
going on?? They don't want to publicize this issue? At the
expense of all of thier customers that are trying to
figure out what's going on?? That is quite poor customer
support--inexcusable. I'm just pissed that I ever signed
up for the useless .net passport thing in the first place--
I can't wait to disable this feature as soon as I can
access my Money file....which will be when???????? Midday
tomorrow? We'll see.... Tag: Support site updated Tag: 171617

PASSPORT PROBLEM FROM A NON-USER
I am sorry to read about all the problems users are having with interfacing to
Money. I remember a few years ago when passport was first offered on Money. It
took quite awhile to get them to stop bothering me to sign up. Since I use AOL
I didn't want another email and I certainly didn't want everything interfaceing
with my personal financial data on the internet. Since I had no need to have my
Money data anywhere but on my home computer I stayed away, and I sure am glad I
did. I get everything I want from Money by using the software without all the
automatic uploads and downloads. I decide when I want a stock update and that's
about the only thing I download on a regular basis. I manually input my data.
No big deal and I know it is right, not conflicting with my bank's database.
The product is great for me. I've used it for almost 9 years now. Lots and lots
of great history there and fortunately I am able to control what I get. I
back-up the (now) 3 disks every week. Sure I have a CD Rom, but I got a 3 1/2
disk drive on my new Dell computer just for Money. I wish all you passport
users a quick fix to your problem. Sometimes simpler is better. Steve Tag: Support site updated Tag: 171586

T-BILLS
I just started buying some T-BILLS directed from the
treasury. I'm not worried about updating the prices of
them, but I've been unable to get them to post properly.
I open up my "Treasury investment" nothing seems to
work. Does anyone know of any place where there is step-
by-step instructions for setting up T-Bill purchases?
Thanks. Tag: Support site updated Tag: 171574
The sign-in name you entered is not associated with this file
I have been using money 2004 deluxe for some time and now
I get a message that says "The sign-in name you entered
is not associated with this file". I am using the same
sign-in name I've always been using. The backup file
doesn't work either.
Any suggestions that doesn't involve loosing everything? Tag: Support site updated Tag: 171568
Anyone going to switch to Quicken?
Fortunately I do not have the Passport problem. Somehow I turned off the
Passport option sometime ago. Dumb luck.
But the situation for those of you who have the problem is terrible and
inexcusable. Assuming the problem gets corrected in the next 24 hours will
any of you switch to Quicken? Can Quicken convert Money files? I do not
use Money bill pay---I use Schwabs. I do download daily my various account
balances however. I have been using Money ever since it came out.
Good luck. Tag: Support site updated Tag: 171564
Exporting to Quicken
Is Quicken able to convert MS Money files into usable
data, and if so, does anyone know if the Money file would
be accessible, given current circumstances surrounding
Passport/Sign-in malfunctions? Tag: Support site updated Tag: 171561

401k contributions problem
I am a recent college grad and just started tracking my money from my new job with MS money. I have a 401k account, which I set up to download from the internet its current worth. However, when I enter my paycheck, I enter the amount that is removed from it each paycheck period to go into my 401k as contributions. The problem is that money adds the contributions separately than the downloaded worth, so effectively it lists that I have twice as much in my 401k than I actually do. Any way to have the contributions deducted from the paycheck entry (for tracking purposes) go into my 401k as regular contributions and then be verified when the online statement gets downloaded instead of it getting added to it? Thanks... Tag: Support site updated Tag: 171559
Bi-weekly vs Monthly Budgets
Recently, I started getting paid every 2nd week, instead
of once per month. My budget was set up on a monthly
basis, and worked well. Now, I want to change to a bi-
weekly budget because of the income change. For example,
groceries was $500 per month, but now I am setting it up
as $500 every 4 weeks. This means that my budget period
will not always start at the beginning of the month,
which seems to mess up the 'Review you current budget
status' page.
For example, my new budget period was to start July 29th,
so I should have $500 available for groceries. However,
the budget status shows that the groceries I bought today
put me over the budgeted limit for the month of July
because it takes the $500 amount, multiplies by 13
periods, then divides by 12 to get a monthly average.
Long story, but is there a way to tell MS Money to start
new budgets every 4 weeks?
I have Money 2003 Canadian Ed.

Any news?
With everything that has been posted about the issue I
just want to make sure that there isn't an update that I
missed. Is the problem fixed yet? Thx. Tag: Support site updated Tag: 171554
Problem with automatic downloading
Anyone notice that certain accounts (i.e., Ameritrade)
take forever to download when you login and use the
automatic downloading? But if you manually download from
all accounts, it takes no time at all.
Any solutions/reasons for this? Tag: Support site updated Tag: 171548
Automatic downloading without a login name
Anyone know if there is a way to log in and use the
automatic download features (for bills, stocks, etc.)
without having to set up a .Net account?
I do not care that it will be unsecure locally. Tag: Support site updated Tag: 171547
possible cause of the sign on problem
I am very concerned that the information we are being
given from Microsoft may not be entirely true. After 3
days of this product not working, I am becoming very
skeptical and believe there may be a bigger problem than
what Microsoft is leading on.
I have become nervous that the potential problem might
lie in the Money and the Money Services not being Y2k
compliant. Does anyone else suspect this? If it were just
a simple data problem as we have been led to believe,
would microsoft not have fixed it in 3 days. I think some
major rewriting of the code is being completed to fix the
flaw in the software. Let me know if I am on the wrong
path, I am just really nervous and upset about not being
able to get to my financial data. I am having trouble
sleeping and eating with the thought of all my data being
gone forever. I have several accounts with hundreds of
dollars and cents that I need to access. Someone please
calm me down.
Is there hope?!

Request for MVPs
Guys/gals, We all know its not your fault, and we
appreciate you. You have access to sources inside M$ that
we can not get to. Is there any possibility that you can
get an estimate of when this log on issue with Money 2004
and Passport will be resolved. I, for one, am getting a
little tired of being patient with M$. Tag: Support site updated Tag: 171545
