I have many categories such as "Gas" that are under category "groups" such as
"Automobile".
I want to view expenses by these groups rather than the too granular
categories.

Know how I can do this?
Do I have to instead create sub categories under the main Automobile category?

thanks

Call those higher level things Categories, and the subset things
"subcategories".

Yes. In a report such as Transactions by Categories, you would click
Customize, and under the Rows&Columns tab, select
SubtotalBy:Categories. Other reports have similar Customize options,
but the method varies.

The thing is, when I create a custom category from the individual
transaction editor it allows me to select which "Group" it belongs to.
And by "Group" I am using MSMoney's vernacular.
I have created a "gas" category and assigned it to the Automobile group but
nowhere do I see any use of Groups.

Ignore those. See http://umpmfaq.info/faqdb.php?cat=17#Q20

Instead, create a gas sub-category of the Automobile (or whatever
you call it) category.

Also note that you can move and rename categories. You did not say
what version of Money you are using, but you can have "dual"
category lists where there is a 2-level hierarchy.

Money 2005 Premium
Thanks for the explanation.
It's pretty frustrating and dumb IMO that money asks you to assign your
custom category to one of these 'groups' but they are never used for anything.

See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/889931/en-us if you want
separate Category and Sub Category items.

I have used Money since 01, and have had Categories (ie: House) Subcategories
(ie: electric, water, insurance etc.), and have no problem assigning or
getting prints of either. I'm using 2005 now. This prior post puzzles me,
are we talking about the same thing, or does this grandma need to get some
oxygen. <grin>

Thanks, that did the trick (regedit), sub cat drop downs are now appearing
for each trx.
I still don't understand what the "Group" is for.
Group being what classification Money asks you to assign a custom category to.
