Can Quicken 2003 Deluxe file be converted into Money 2005 Trial fi

When I try to do conversion in from Quicken 2003 Deluxe QDF file into Money
2005 Deluxe Trial version file conversion always fails. Is this possible to
do? Or do I need a full deluxe version first? Or does it work at all?

US versions? It should usually work, but it will not always work.

First do Validate in Quicken. I think that is File->Validate.

Rick Hess posted that in Quicken you can select File->Copy, and let
it make a copy of your file. This routine will, among other
things, defragment your file. Then convert the copy.

Change all custom types to standard Quicken types. Any custom type
will be converted to type Mutual Fund by Money.

Consider having a minimum of other things running when you do
the conversion in Money.

If the above are not successful, consider Super-Validate in
Quicken. Hold Ctrl+Shift keys down during the Validate process.

Hi Nihad,

I just converted from Quicken 2003 Premier to the Money 2005 Deluxe Trial
last night. Mine went very well, and all the accounts balanced to the penny
except my 401k (which balanced after I entered quotes for the securities).

I tried the trial back in 2003, but Money couldn't import my Q file back
then, probably because I had about 14 years worth of transactions.
Validating and super validating didn't help. I eventually got everything in
using QIF files, but decided at that time to stick with Quicken for the time
being.

Since that time I've archived everything prior to 2001 out of my Quicken
file, so there was a lot less to convert when using the 2005 trial. I did
see that a few transactions in my wife's IRA had a note that they'd been
changed, but I haven't been able to figure out what, if anything, was
actually changed yet. The # of shares and the prices match what was in
Quicken.

So, based on my experience it can be done. If you've got a huge file you
might want to make a copy of your Quicken database and archive out some old
stuff. Then try converted to Money using the Quicken file that had the old
stuff archived out. I thought I'd miss the old data, but I haven't and I've
got a backup if I ever need it.

Gary, if you were trying to convert Q2003 to M2003 I am not surprised it
didn't work. Money is always one version behind on conversion - so Q2003 to
M2004 ought to be OK.

Hi Bob,

No, I was attempting to Convert Q2001 Deluxe to Money 2003 Deluxe...it
just never worked.

I wanted to post a follow up to my original post though....I have since
found out that my recent conversion didn't go as smoothly as I had
originally thought. While all of the account balances came over
correctly, I'm having a nightmare of a time with categories:

1. Several categories didn't come over at all. The ones I've found
for sure are all of my Utility subcategories and Insurance
subcategories. The main category is still there in both cases, but the
subcategories are gone, and all transactions that were assigned to
those subcategories no longer have a category assigned.

2. My Groceries category came over in the conversion, but most
(possibly all) of the transactions assigned to that category now have
no category assigned. If the transaction was a split, with part going
to groceries and part going to other categories, the other categories
appear to still be there, but the amount assigned to groceries has no
category in the split.

I didn't catch the above two items initially because I was about 2
months behind entering categories on my credit card. When I went to do
that over the weekend I found this problem.

I went ahead and updated all the categories for the CC's in Quicken and
then did a validate. I re-converted the file to Money, but the same
thing happened. I had 5 transactions unassigned in Q, but M now has
about 1,500 unassigned. I don't think I can spend the time
re-assigning those transactions to go forward using M, which is
disappointing because some of the reports and budgeting would be much
better for my wife and I than what Q offers.

I can't think of a way to export them from Q and import them into M
without creating even more work for myself. I posted this separately,
but no one has responded with any suggestions yet.

Oh OK.

BTW have you tried Cal's tricks? Also if you Google for earlier posts there
are a number of suggestions that Cal and Rick Bollar have made about
renaming accounts etc.

I have some speculative new tricks to try if you are willing to
experiment. Before converting, rename Utility to Utility2, Insurance
to Insurance2, and Groceries to Groceries2. I know this does not
make sense, but it may be worth a try.

Bob,

Thanks...I Googled and found a page at mvps.org that sounds exactly
like my problem. I'll try renaming my problem categories in Quicken
and then do the conversion. I can always delete them in Money and move
the transactions to the correct category when I delete.

For anyone who is following along or having the same problem, check

and look for the paragraph #2 about transaction categories
disappearing. As soon as I try this I'll post back with the results.

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to follow up from the above post. I created an empty Money
file and printed out the default category list. For any category on
that list that had one with the same name in Quicken, I changed the
Quicken category name by adding "My" in front of it (i.e. Groceries in
Q became My Groceries).

I converted to Money and all the categories came over fine, so I guess
I'll run Q and M for a few weeks and decide which I'm going to go
forward with.

I have a few other questions I haven't been able to answer from the
miserable help files that are included, so I'll post later when I get
into the thick of it.
