I am trying to import MS Money 2003 file from my desktop (XP Home) to my
laptop (XP Pro) but I get message that it can't find or access the file or
drive etc. Both PC's have the same version of Money but the laptop money was
not used until I went on a trip. I copied both the main and backup files and
thought that it would be OK but so far no success.

TIA.
Peter.

Don't do File->Import.

Instead copy the *.mny and *.mbf files to the MyDocuments folder
from a USB flash drive. Open Money by double-clicking the *.mny in
Windows Explorer, or restore a backup by double-clicking a *.mbf
file. If you choose to restore, don't restore to the default
location. Instead Browse to your MyDocuments folder and give the
file a new name.

Thanks for your help Cal.
I have tried your suggestion but so far without success. When I click on the
original Money file it offers to convert it and I have a choice to save in a
new name but after the 'conversion' I get the following error message.
"Money cannot locate NewFileName- or cannot open it, possibly because it is
read only or you do not have permission to change it or your disk is write
protected.
The file is where it should be. The disk is not write protected, the file is
not read only (I even made it read only and changed it back to try). I
obviously have access to the disk so I am stumped.
The converted BACKUP file defaults to MSMONEY.and has .M12 extension. If I
repeat the process it creates msmoney0.M12, ...1.M12, ...2.M12 etc.
The program version nos are: 14.0.100.805. But it is identified as Microsoft
Money 2005.
TIA for any further assistance.

Ahh. There is the clue.

Either open the sample.mny file in your install folder, or let
Money 2005 create a new Money file, clicking Decline in the
process. It will do an update. Close Money. Then open Money and
check that Help->About... says you then have version 14.0.100.1105.

Then you should be able to open or restore your existing files.

I also cannot import my money 2003 backup files. From the beginning, and
even when I followed the directions here to put the files on my hard drive
and rename the restore file - the program shuts down. I can't get the
program to open up without shutting down again even when double clicking the
.mny and .mbf files.

It shows version 11.0. So I need to update to another version?

From the earlier postings in the thread I thought you were trying to Restore
(NOT Import!!! If that's what you are trying to do, it will not work) a
Money 2003 Backup in Money 2005.

Version 11.0 is Money 2003. So, this invalidates my understanding of what
was being asked.

Are you 100%+ sure that the backup is really from M03?

My hard drive went out and I'm trying to put my information back onto the new
hard drive. I've installed my Money 2003, version 11 and am trying to load
the backup I had from using this same version before. I'm not sure if this
is restoring or importing, but every way that I try to get the info in shuts
down the program.

So, what is the extension of the file (.mny? .mbf?) you are trying to read?
Presumably .MBF. For this, you want to Restore. (Import is a totally
separate operation for a completely different kind of file.)

Are you 100%+ sure you never accepted one of the offers to upgrade to a
newer version? (More than one person has come here with a similar complaint
that was eventually traced to this kind of situation.)

One thing you could test--and it might produce some data that would help
clear up the last point--is to install a copy of the Money 2007 Deluxe trial
off the web. It might be able to restore your file even if M03 cannot. If
so, it would also upgrade the file to the M07 format and leave a file behind
that had an extension (.M11, .M12, .M14, .M15) that would tell us what
version wrote it. If it can restore your data from M03, that might be one
way to go--just go buy an M07 CD at the store and move on from M03.

Sorry I don't have any better answers for you.
