Hi All:

After working hard to get my Money 2004 to synchronize with MSN Money
(thanks Mark...), I still have the following problem.

My investment accounts which can be displayed by the MSN Portfolio Manager
do not display the correct cash balance for my investment accounts. After
the initial synchronization between Money 2004 and MSN Money, when I go to
MSN Money/My Money and display the Portfolio Manager, my accounts were
correct except for the cash balances were not transferred. (This obviously
resulted in the account balances being incorrect.) I went into the
individual investment Accounts Details and checked the "Track cash balance
associated with this account" and manually updated the correct cash balance
for the account.

The next time I synchronized Money 2004 with MSN Money, if the cash balance
for an account had not changed, it remained unchanged in the Portfolio
Manager from the amount I manually had updated previously. However, if a
cash balance in an investment account had changed since the last
synchronization, the cash balance for the investment account was removed in
the Portfolio Manager and the "Track cash balance associated with this
account" had been unchecked by the process.

Does anyone know what is going on here? Am I misusing this feature or is
there a bug I don't know about? Bottom line is that the synchronization
process returns incorrect investment account balances because it doesn't
handle the cash balances associated with these accounts correctly.

Thanks for any help.

Sid

I suspect that this is simply an limitation in how the two different
"Portfolios" are implemented.
The web-site doesn't allow you to track individual cash transacations like
Money 2004 does.
Obviously, the web-site could have been implemented to simply import the
current balance from Money. But, if it was, it's not working that way
currently.

I have used synchronization for many years at this point. It is not a
perfect system. Cash balances are not traded back and forth. They maintain
themselves in Money pretty well, but you will need to update them manually
in in msn moneycentral from time to time. About every other week, I remove
my web access to moneycentral all together, and then set it up again. This
is not an easy process either. Often I have to search my computer for all
the *.inv files and delete them prior to setting up MS Money to access on
the web. I have accepted the frailities of the synch process; it gets a
little better with each year, but it still leaves a lot to be desired.

Thanks for the reply, William.

Yes, I have had similar experience with the synchronization feature of
Money. Like you, I have used it for a few years and seen it get better. I
have, like you, destroyed my MSN Money accounts and restarted, often with
aggravating and frustrating procedures. However, now about the only problem
I have seen of late is that it still does not sync cash balances. (If I used
MSN Money more, I'd probably find other remaining issues as well.)

It's strange that the sync procedure doesn't just transfer the cash balance.
What I find especially strange is that it will leave the investment account
cash balance alone if it hasn't changed; however, it will wipe out the
investment cash balance in MSN Money if it has changed since the last
synchronization. And, of course, why is there a "Track cash balance" check
box in the account properties in the Portfolio Manager.

Anyway, I wish that I knew Microsoft is planning on fixing this. I would
think so, but I would have thought this would have been a bigger priority as
it presents an incorrect account balance. Is it possible that there's
something we don't know about in using this field?

Re: MSN Portfolio Manager Doesn't Sync Cash Balance with Money 2004 by jpr

Same for me. Portfolio Manager used to sync my cash balances until I
"up"graded to 2003. Now it doesn't, which makes it much less useful. Every
month or so, synchronization stops working and new transactions don't show
up in Portfolio Manager. Removing everything and disabling synchronization
and then starting all over again gets me back in sync, but what a pain in
the neck!

I upgraded to 2003 hoping that it would fix the latter problem and instead
got the new problem of cash balances not working. I guess from your message
that it would be a mistake to upgrade to 2004 in hopes of the problem being
fixed. On top of that, there's no upgrade price! Does MS think we buy new
product every year?
