Answers to questions in order:
Because, probably among other things, there are lots of things archiving
doesn't remove.
Are you asking what is the storage format/engine? MSISAM--which is a Jet
(the database engine under Access) derivative, apparently.
There seems to be some correlation between file size and performance but not
