I have a laptop with Money installed and over the years upgraded at least 5
versions to Money 2002.

Somewhere along the line, my datafile name changed from myname to My
Portfolio

When I opened Money 2002 it uses to ask me to enter in my Hotmail password -
it already had the hotmail email in the user name box.

I enter in the hotmail password and it would tell me that it was the
incorrect password, but it would open my data file anyway.

At some stage I started tracking my stocks on MSN in the Online Portfiolio
feature which was saved on my laptop as a separate file.
If I loggen on to MSN and put in my hotmail account, up popped my stock
portfolio
I think somewhere over the years, Money linked my MSN portfiolio to my Money
files with the hotmail account.

Three weeks ago the HD on my laptop fried and I got a new one, installed
Money 2002 and had a backup of the money data file from a CD

When I try to open the file now, it prompts me for a password and my hotmail
password is not opening it.

If I log on to MSN Money using my hotmail account , it shows my portfiolo.

I have tried other passwords that I have used over the years and nothing.

1. Did money change my password when I upgraded to 2002 two years ago.

2. How can I open my file - can MS provide a solutio to this.

My life finances are on this since 1995

Its tax season and I am at a loose end

Does this mean that you are running Money 2002 currently?

I think there is the key. I suggest you Start->Search for *.mny on
your whole computer. I suspect you will find myname.mny.

I am thinking you would need Money 2005 to read "My Portfolio.mny",
but I could be wrong.

I suspect "My Portfolio.mny" is a Money 2005 file.

I am currently running Money 2002

I doubt that the My Portfolio file is 2005 as I never had a version of Money
greater than 2002 - nobody else uses the Laptop either.

I found the myname.mny file but it is dated 09/10/2003 - maybe the date
Money 2002 was installed ??

I opened it and it said that my password was incorrect and directed my to
passport.com change it.

However, the email address that it had for the user name is a real old non
MSN email account ( a Bigfoot email address )

It put me in a passport page and asked me a few questions, asked me to enter
new password and said I was done.

Back to myname.mny entered in the password and it opens !!!

However its all stuff before 09 2003

What happening to My Portfolio.mny file dated 12 2004

I have tried the new password with that but no go.

Where does Money check the password - on line or in the file itself ?

Any pointers appreciated.

Search your computer for *.m10; does Search find such a file?

If you don't find one, I will not speculate further.

If you use Passport, both.

If you use a conventional password, locally.

If you don't use either, there is no such checking. This may seem
obvious, but I thought I would mention it.

I suspect that if you download the Money 2005 Deluxe trial, it will
open your " My Portfolio.mny". You can have both versions installed
on your computer at the same time into different folders.

That could get you going.

OK

I downloaded 2005 and it opened up the My Portfolio using a hotmail account
, but the file Blank - nothing in there.

The file size is 3400 kb so I suspect it has something in there.

I tried to 'repair' but no luck

FYI

While using 2002 and opening my old myname.mny file which is dated 09 03,
the log in screen has a 'Passport' background to it and it list the passport
email address in the top left and asks me for the password.

When I try to open the My Portfolio.mny that Money created in place of
myname.mny there is no passport background theme to the log on screen and
a small pop up box is asking me for the password.

Does this tell me anything. that con resolve my dilema.

A .m10 file was almost surely left behind by a NEWER version of Money than
M02 upgrading that file to the newer format. That's where the .m10 files
come from. Rename one or all of those to .MNY and open them in M02.

The files that contain the string 'm10' are all in the C:\Program
Files\Microsoft Money\Media\AvHelp folder and have creation dates of June 11
2001

they are either wave sound files.or video files

There are no files with an Extension *.m10

I'm afraid that that is about the size of a new file.

I see you had no .m10 files. So my hypothesis did not bear out.

You might also search for *.mbf files. Those are backups. Worth a
look.
