    - There will be web service interruptions this weekend Redmond, July 30, 2004 19:15 PDT Some MSN Money features (My Accounts, MSN Bill Pay, MSN Alerts, Portfolio Manager) are off for maintenance, and should be back in action late tonight (or early tomorrow morning). This is part of our regularly scheduled update and has nothing to do with the recent sign-in issue with Money.     - Budget Issue I have a question regarding the Budget function in Money 2004. When I run the budget wizard (the regular process, not autobudget), I get a category, "Transfers out of budget accounts." It is referring to one of my credit cards. Specifically, it is taking the amount I am using as the default for that account in the Bills and Deposits section and calling that an expense item. I want the account to be in the budget, and I can't find anywhere I have designated it out of the budget. Can anyone help me understand what is going on here?     - Response from support on Sign-in issue I know there are a number of posts on here, but I got an email from MS Support on an open ticket and thought I would post it as well. -Tim -------------- Hello, Thank you so much for your patience while we worked on this difficult problem. At this time we have developed a fix that should allow you to regain access to your Money data file. The utility is called the Money Key Wizard and can be accessed by using the steps below. Please note, at no time during the repair is any of your personal data available to Microsoft or anyone else. To regain access to your Money data file: 1. Close all open Applications. 2. Make a copy of your Money data file and place it on your desktop. If you are unsure how to do this, you may follow the instructions located <http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;164944&Product=mny> 3. Open your browser and log onto the Internet. 4. Connect to <http://msn.com> 5. Sign into your Passport with the Sign In link at the top of the page. (Please ensure this is the Passport that you have assigned to your Money data file.) If you are already signed in (the link says Sign Out), please click Sign out and then Sign back in to ensure you have the appropriate Passport. 6. Once you have signed into your Passport, connect to <http://sync.money.msn.com/help/pss/w1.asp> 7. Read these steps thoroughly and follow carefully. If you are receiving the error message in step 2, click the link for the Money Key Wizard. 8. Review the next screen. You should receive the following message: You can now open your Money file. Thank you for your patience! If you do not receive confirmation that you can now open your file, please follow the instructions listed on the screen. 9. Once you have received the confirmation screen, Open Money. 10. Log into your data file with your current Passport credentials. Once this login is successful, I would like to recommend that you remove and re-associate your Passport. To do this: 1. Within Money, click on File and choose Password Manager 2. Click "Change" 3. Choose "Disable Money's Passport features and then click "Next" 4. Put a check mark in the box in front of "Disable this Passport for use in Money" and click Finish. 5. Choose "No" when prompted with the message asking if you want to clear your Credit Center, online banking, and brokerage passwords. 6. Finally click "OK" 7. Close Money and wait approximately 60 seconds prior to reopening. 8. Open Money and login with your Passport credentials. 9. Click on File and choose Password Manager 10. Click on Use Passport Sign In 11. Enter your sign in name and password and click Sign In 12. Click on OK If this process resolves your issue, you can go ahead and delete the copy of your Money data file that was created in step 2 above. If this information does not resolve your issue, please document exactly what happens when you try the above steps so we may investigate this further. I will be looking forward to your response letting me know whether or not this resolution worked for you.     - Downloading From The Bank - help I did the fix and can now open my money file. I had to repair the file as the home page showed values in the billions (were that it was true!) I noted that all my account numbers were replaced with '???????' Now when trying to make epays or download statements, I get this: "The following transactions failed because the provider encountered an error. Check your logon credentials and try again." I also got another error nmessage that said the bank's internet address was invalid. I went to the online services manager in Money, with the same results.     - Sign-In Wizard Failure I am a Money 2004 user that has been affected by the sign in issue. I tried to use the fix posted to: http://sync.money.msn.com/help/pss/w1.asp but the wizard told me that my file was not affected. I think that the wizard is looking at the wrong Money file since I have restored an old version to try and work around this problem. Here is my specific case. 1. I ran into the sign in problem and tried to restore the local backup. 2. This failed so I resorted to a very old back (January) that I had on CD. 3. I could open this very old backup, but still not the new backup. 4. Today Microsoft posted the key wizard fix and I followed the steps. 5. The wizard tells me that my file does not appear to be affected by this issue. I think that the wizard is somehow looking at the very old file that does open rather than the current file that does not. What can I do?     - "Cash Flow Forecast" Trended items.. Hi! Suddenly, today, when I went to my "cash flow" forecast, my forecast seemed way different than before. Well, let me back up. I use the cash flow forecast strictly to predict what I have SCHEDULED to pay...nothing else. Now, when I go to the cash flow, I see "trended" items...I do not want to see these trended items. I did see the "hide transacation" function, and went through the forecast and hid all these "trended" items...but something still seems amiss. How did these items get to my cash flow forecast in the first place? How can I stop them from happening in the future? Right now, I still see the "trended" items, though they are 'dark' and not apparently a part of the cash flow forecast.     - Pay for tech support for recent problem? Did anybody but me end up having to pay anyone for tech support becuase of the recent problem? If so, did you have any luck getting refunds? When I started having the problem, I first spent a couple hours exhaustively searching the MS Knowledge Base, then I called Dell (because Money was OEM on my laptop, and the MS customer support page led me to believe that's what I needed to do). Of course, Dell only offers free support for the first 21 days, so, feeling incredibly desperate to get to my file, thinking that something had become corrupted, and thinking I'm going through the only channel I'm aware of as an option, I subscribe to a $99 Dell service contract for 6 months. So Dell naturally couldn't tell me what my problem was (spent about an hour on the phone with the annoyingly talkative tech support guy, listening to him do the same KB searches I had already done), I ended up calling Microsoft and charging $35 for their one-time help. That's when I found out the nature of the problem, and I believe my $35 was refunded. Dell, however, refuses to refund my money. They "allowed" me to downgrade my contract to $49 for 90 days (I wasn't even given that as an option when I purchased the original contract), but wouldn't outright cancel it and refund the full amount because I did receive "best effort" support. UGHHHH! So 2 positive things came out of this ordeal: (1) I discovered this forum, and (2) I've developed a better back-up system for all my data files.     - Backup Strategy Suggestions If you have not done so, this would be a good time to review your backup strategy. In Tools->Options->Backup I suggest checking x Automatically backup to hard disk on exit x Prompt me before backing up each time* x Make my file small ... Then periodically, perhaps once per month or more, copy your latest backup (named differently from your earlier backups) to a CDR. With XP, this can be a copy and paste operation. Otherwise use the burning software that came with your CDR drive. I suggest use of a USB Flash drive also. They typically act like a big floppy. Even a 32 MB drive is big enough to be useful. Glyn Simpson describes a more sophisticated automated method here: http://www.mvps.org/money/backup.htm * This has two advantages. You can change the file name occasionally. I like to pick a name something like money040728. Then it is easy to change the name to have multiple backups. The .mbf extension is automatic. Please, please work with Microsoft to come up with a better system for communicating with its customers in real-time when issues of this or even lesser magnitude arise. The whole frustration with this issue was the small amount of communication and the long lag time between posts.     - Problem importing statement I've imported my bank statements before, but now it imports it just fine and I see the number of transactions I need to review. Then, almost instantly, I get a message that there was a problem saving the file...then the imported statement disappears. We have been on the verge of good news all afternoon (and evening), and it is here. I'm happy to announce that we have published a solution to the sign-in problem. Users that have been unable to use the passwords or work with their files offline should follow the directions at: http://sync.money.msn.com/help/pss/w1.asp I know that there are additional questions, which I have answered below. Q1: What happened with our passwords? A1: On Monday, one of our servers was updated and inadvertently pointed to the wrong location to verify authentication. The authentication process worked perfectly - we caused the problem by looking in the wrong server location. This mistake only affected Money services. (If you think of your login information as a key, and our servers as a lock, then we changed the lock on the safe, and the old key wouldn't work anymore. There is no way for the user [or anybody else] to create working login information. The good news is that nobody could open the local file because of this mistake at any time; your information is still protected.) We corrected the "wrong server location" problem Tuesday morning, and users who did not login between late Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning should be able to use their files normally. Those who were affected may continue to be affected, however, since Money downloaded some of the garbled information from our servers. (Basically, we made a copy of the lock on your local file. Why did we do this? Because when you change the lock yourself, you don't want the old key to continue working on your local file. You also wouldn't want there to be an easy way for somebody on your machine to ignore the change in the locks. Of course, we will look at this scenario to see if we could solve it without decreasing security in the future.) This situation has not caused any violation of our users' privacy, and our online services have continued to be available. Q2: How does the fix work? A2: We have carefully recreated the incorrect environment of Monday evening and a Web page to access it. The web page will allow affected users to login with their current information and recover the lock information that has locked them out. This will allow them to unlock their file. It is important to note that users who changed their password should use their new password, and that no user will be able to access the lock information for another user. Again, this solution does not violate our users' privacy. We are using your login information to restore the lock to your unique key. Users who have been unable to access their local files should open a web browser to http://sync.money.msn.com/help/pss/w1.asp and follow the directions on that page. Q3: Why did it take so long? A3: We have addressed the problem in stages. Our first efforts were to restore the correct configuration of our servers, while preserving the state they were in for investigation. Then, we started a careful investigation of the impact on users. Naturally, we are very careful when dealing with users' login information and follow strict procedures to protect their privacy. We have identified three different states that users' files can be in, and we worked on fixes for all of them. We realize that it was important that the fix be thorough. At all times we were working as directly and hard as possible at getting a solution out to the affected users as soon as possible. Q4: What if I still can't access my file? A4: You should send email to mnyngsup@microsoft.com. Q5: Was this Passport's fault? A5: No. Passport was working correctly, and always did work for access to our online services, such as MSN Bill Pay. The issue relates to Money's server interactions with local Money files. Q6: Why does Money use Passport for the local file? A6: We use Passport for a number of web services at Microsoft, including financial web services that we offer through Microsoft Money. Since the local file can access these services, the file needs to be protected as well. For ease of use, we use the same system, Passport, to protect access to the local file.     - I'm angry @ money2004 - balance screwed up Hello, This is the second time Money 2004 has crashed on my windows XP system. I did a fresh install of XP and applied all patches & SP1. Money crashed and my file is now showing incorrect balances in the account list. I tried the salv.exe program and it reported no problems. I had one backup, and money must have written over it, because it too is bad. I switched from Quicken and now regret it. If I cannot resolve this issue, I am dumping Money.     - money 2004 glitch I suffered from the same problem when I tried to open up my ms money file with net login. I found that if I opened the file without net login, closed the file back up and then reopened, I gained access and my file online was updated. Just an observation.     - Sign In Solution Worked The fix worked. Many thanks to those who worked long, late hours on this. There were some intermediate questions you get asked during the process, such as, "Do you also want to clear your online banking passwords" (I said "No", and that seemed to work ok.) It might be helpful to provide a bit more detail of what to expect, and guidance on how to answer the questions. Also, perhaps Microsoft needs to rethink the architecture of how Passport interacts with Money.     - PASSWORD Issue I cannot get into my Money file. I have been effected by the problem this week. It appears to have wiped out my passwords. After I managed to resolve the NET.PASWORD issue Money 2004 then asked for the file password (it was protected but was never asked for).     - I can access my files but there's a problem I was able to access my money file and restore my backup from the 26th which was the last day I was able to access it. Everything is fine except for one strange thing. All of my balances for all of my accounts are about $628,743,688,565,700.00. Everywhere that a balance is shown in the program it has a number that is almost the same, within $100.00. When I click on the Account List icon, next to subtotal for my bank accounts and credit accounts it displays: ##err##. How the heck do I fix this? All of the information in each account is correct for deposits and withdrawals, but's it's kind of nice to know my balances. I have a backup from 1 or 2 weeks ago I can use, but don't want to lose everything since that backup. Any help on fixing these screwy balances would be apprecciated.     - Frustrating problem with adding funds .... Hi I have a very strange problem. I am testing the trial version of Money 2004 and it works great with my job computer (win XP Pro). When i tried it with my home coputer (Win XP Home) i have got a strange problem. When I add investments "Managed funds" and make transactions like "buy" and "add shares" I can only enter quantity and price with whole numbers, like 1, 2, 25, 43 and so on. I can not enter quantity and price with decimals. For example when i enter a price of 8,20 Money changes that to 82. When I enter a price of 43,24 (43 dollars and 24 cent)Money 2004 change that to 4,324 but treats it like 4 thousand 3 hundred 24 dollars. So the total value that Money sums to is should be 8,20 x 43,24 = 354 dollars 568 cent Instead I get 82 x 4,324 = 354.568,00 dollars( I am rich !!!!!)     - budget and investments Buying funds etc. is treated as an expense from the budget point of view, since investment accounts are out of budget. I don't think it is correct.     - Sign in solution is availble Redmond, July 18, 2004, 22:00 PDT I'm sorry that this post is so late, and I know that folks are frustrated with the lack of communication. We have been on the verge of good news all afternoon (and evening), and it is here. I'm happy to announce that we have published a solution to the sign-in problem. Users that have been unable to use the passwords or work with their files offline should follow the directions at: http://sync.money.msn.com/help/pss/w1.asp I know that there are additional questions, which I have answered below. Q1: What happened with our passwords? A1: On Monday, one of our servers was updated and inadvertently pointed to the wrong location to verify authentication. The authentication process worked perfectly - we caused the problem by looking in the wrong server location. This mistake only affected Money services. (If you think of your login information as a key, and our servers as a lock, then we changed the lock on the safe, and the old key wouldn't work anymore. There is no way for the user [or anybody else] to create working login information. The good news is that nobody could open the local file because of this mistake at any time; your information is still protected.) We corrected the "wrong server location" problem Tuesday morning, and users who did not login between late Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning should be able to use their files normally. Those who were affected may continue to be affected, however, since Money downloaded some of the garbled information from our servers. (Basically, we made a copy of the lock on your local file. Why did we do this? Because when you change the lock yourself, you don't want the old key to continue working on your local file. You also wouldn't want there to be an easy way for somebody on your machine to ignore the change in the locks. Of course, we will look at this scenario to see if we could solve it without decreasing security in the future.) This situation has not caused any violation of our users' privacy, and our online services have continued to be available. Q2: How does the fix work? A2: We have carefully recreated the incorrect environment of Monday evening and a Web page to access it. The web page will allow affected users to login with their current information and recover the lock information that has locked them out. This will allow them to unlock their file. It is important to note that users who changed their password should use their new password, and that no user will be able to access the lock information for another user. Again, this solution does not violate our users' privacy. We are using your login information to restore the lock to your unique key. Users who have been unable to access their local files should open a web browser to http://sync.money.msn.com/help/pss/w1.asp and follow the directions on that page. Q3: Why did it take so long? A3: We have addressed the problem in stages. Our first efforts were to restore the correct configuration of our servers, while preserving the state they were in for investigation. Then, we started a careful investigation of the impact on users. Naturally, we are very careful when dealing with users' login information and follow strict procedures to protect their privacy. We have identified three different states that users' files can be in, and we worked on fixes for all of them. We realize that it was important that the fix be thorough. At all times we were working as directly and hard as possible at getting a solution out to the affected users as soon as possible. Q4: What if I still can't access my file? A4: You should send email to mnyngsup@microsoft.com. Q5: Was this Passport's fault? A5: No. Passport was working correctly, and always did work for access to our online services, such as MSN Bill Pay. The issue relates to Money's server interactions with local Money files. Q6: Why does Money use Passport for the local file? A6: We use Passport for a number of web services at Microsoft, including financial web services that we offer through Microsoft Money. Since the local file can access these services, the file needs to be protected as well. For ease of use, we use the same system, Passport, to protect access to the local file.     - Money '04 lock out I'm surprised by the tone of many of these posts--it's as if people are empathetic with MSFT on this Money fiasco. There is no doubt here; MSFT really screwed up on multiple counts, the first not telling us exactly what is going on. How many of you spent hours trying to logon, search the MSFT knowledge database for a solution, call up their service center, etc? For instance, why don't they have a bulletin on their Money support site explaining what is going on?? They don't want to publicize this issue? At the expense of all of thier customers that are trying to figure out what's going on?? That is quite poor customer support--inexcusable. thought my password was, but still can't get in. Is
