    - Using Money to keep Track of Mileage Costs Does anyone have an easy way to use Money to keep track of my business mileage costs? Now I use a spreadsheet to keep all of the mileage and then multiply the total by the federal tax mileage cost and then add it as a cash cost to Money.     - Reconciling/balancing Does anyone know a way to have Money automatically reconcile to an electronic bank statement? i.e. when I am done downloading my latest bank transactions electronically, there are still some pending transactions in my own register that haven't cleared yet (e.g. ATM withdrawals, checks I've written, etc). So my own register doesn't match the bank's balance. The only way to reconcile the two balances is to wait until I get a paper statement and then do "Balance". Or I can manually add up the pending transactions and see if adding that to my own balance equals the bank's balance. I don't want to wait until I get my bank's monthly statement to reconcile.     - Portfolio report with "Lots" I'm going back to "double entry" accounting! For you wipper-snappers who don't know what "double entry" accounting is: it's where you enter a transaction once into Money, and then again into Quicken. (It's a joke!) None the less, that's what I'm going to do. My question: In Money 06 is there a way to create a Portfolio Value Report which shows my individual stocks and the current "Lots", including purchase dates, prices, and quantities, for each stock?     - M04 Transaction & Quote Downloads stopped? I've been using M04 for a while now. I skipped M05 and M06 and I'm on my way to skipping M07 (maybe). Anyway, I'm at about 3 years of using M04. According to the licence agreement, M04 deluxe online access will cease to work after * 3 years after activiation of software, or * Sept 1, 2007 Whichever comes earlier. I did a quick google groups search and couldn't find anyone who had reported having experienced this 3 year expiration. I have vague recollection of having read of this kind of thing before (in this group), but that it was always just something user error and not actually the online service expiration. So my question is this: Has anyone experienced this expiration? The license for M04 Standard was the earlier of 2 years or Sept 1, 2006. Surely there are some M04 Std users out there who can weigh in as to whether or not downloads have ceased. My reason for considering M07 is that I may eventually be forced to deal with not being able to d/l transactions and quotes. And frankly that sucks. So I'm considering whether or not M07 will suffice. So I'm curious as to whether or not the online expiration in the license is just some text in a file or whether or not it's real. FWIW, the text in the M07 license is far more unsettling: "Microsoft provides Online services with the software. It may change or cancel them at any time." Part of my motivation for looking at M07 is to extend my online services. But the M07 license agreement sounds worse to me than the M04 agreement.     - Have Money 2006--want to downgrade to 2005 I just purchased a new laptop with Money 2006. On my old laptop which died I was using 2005. My online bank does not support Money 2005 for downloading transactions. How do I downgrade to Money 2005? Can I just uninstall M 2006 and install M 2005?     - Customizing Portfolio Manager question Hello! In MS Money 2006 Portfolio Manager (PM), one of my column headers is "Last tran.". The tooltip for this says "Date of the last transaction". When I right click on the header and select "Edit current view", and click on the "Portfolio columns" tab, it says that "Last transaction date" is "the last date the investment was TRADED". I have a stock which I bought in 1999 and have just been getting the dividends reinvested. So in Portfolio Manager, it only shows in the "Last tran." column the date of the buy (1999) rather than the date of the most recent dividend (9/2006). Is there way a way to customize PM so that the date shown is the most recent date of ANY transaction (buy, sell, reinvest) rather than a buy date which is 7 years old?? Appreciate the help!     - Electronic Payments I recently switched from making electronic payments from within MM2004 to making the payments at the banks websight. When I make a payment on the banks websight, the next time I update MM2004, the electronic payment is downloaded from the bank and entered into my check register. The downloaded payment does not contain any of the category information created in the Bill Pay section of MM2004. Money does not prompt "Is this your scheduled payment to XXX?". This creates a situation where I have to enter all the category information into the downloaded electronic payment.     - How to customize account list? In Money 2004, is there a way to choose the account I'd like to appear in the account list? The is the only view I use but some accounts are rarely used and I don't want them taking up space on the account list? For example, if I could have only favorite accounts display that would be great. I can sort by favorites but I like sorting by account type since it categorizes everything.     - Upgrading from Money 2002 to Money 2007 Do I need to uninstall Money '02 before installing Money '07? Also, my hard drive is formatted into 2 drives, ("C" & "D"). I had '02 installed on my "D" drive and I still have my backup files on my "C" drive. When I deleted '02 from my "D" drive I found that I still have a Microsoft Money folder containing "InvReg.exe" and "PssSumm.txt" files. I have no idea why either of these files are still there and I don't know if I need to keep the "InvReg.exe" file. The txt file merely notes "File Import: Your call completed successfully." I don't think I need to keep this file either. But, I am not sure. I would also like to know if I install '07 on my "D" drive will I still be able to import my backup files from '02 on my "C" drive?     - Make money Parents of 15 year old find $71,000 (US $ CASH) hidden in his closet. Does this headline look familiar? Of course it does. You most likely must have just seen this story recently featured on a major nightly news program. (U.S.A). His mother was cleaning, and putting away laundry, when she came across a large brown paper bag. After school, for the past 2 months, he had been doing this right on his computer in his bedroom. I just got the e-mail one day and I figured what the heck. I put my name on it like the instructions said and I started sending it out, said the clever 15 year old. The e-mail letter listed 5 addresses, and contained instructions to send one $5 dollar bill to each person on the list. Then delete the address at the bottom and move the others down, and finally, adding your name to the top of the list. The letter goes on to state that you would receive several thousand dollars in $5 bills within two weeks, if you sent out the letter with your name at the top of the 5 address list. I get junk e-mail all the time, and really did not think it was going to work, the boy continued. Within the first few days of sending out the e-mail, the post office box that his parents had gotten him for his video game magazine subscriptions began to fill up, not with magazines, but envelopes containing $5 dollar bills. About a week later I rode my bike down to the post office and my box had 1 magazine, and about 300 envelopes stuffed in it. There was also a yellow slip that said I had to go to the (post office) counter. I thought I was in trouble or something. He goes on, I went up to the counter and they had a whole box of mail for me. I had to ride home and empty out my backpack, because I could not carry it all. Over the next few weeks, the boy continued sending out e-mail. The money just kept coming in, and I just kept sorting it out and stashing it in the closet, I barely had time for my homework. He had also been riding his bike to several of the banks in his area and exchanging the $5 dollar bills for twenties, fifties and hundreds. I didn't want the banks to get suspicious so I kept riding to different banks with like five thousand at a time in my backpack. I would usually tell the lady at the bank counter that my dad had sent me in to exchange the money, and he was outside waiting for me. Every $5 note that he received contained a little note that read, Please send me report number XYZ. This simple note made the letter legal because he was exchanging a service, (the report on how to) for a $5 fee.     - How to create retainer account? I have certain amounts of money that are spent at one location for a month. I'd like to setup something in Money 2004 that allows me to track how money in these accounts are distributed. For example, say I will spend money on these two services each month: Oct 2006 ServiceA $300 ServiceB $100 In September 2006, I'd like to apply the above money as spent and my checking account appear $400 less. Through out Oct, I will gradually spend the $400 but want to track how it is spent. For example: Oct 10 - ServiceA $50 Oct 12 - ServiceB $75 Oct 19 - ServiceA $100 and so on. As I spend the money from my primary checking account, the amount applied to the above two retainer accounts decreases until it reaches $0. This the screen you get when you click on the chart for a particular investment in the Portfolio view. It bascially takes you to Investment Home and shows a large chart for the investment you licked on.     - Spinoff/Demerger Corporate Events Folks, Having given this matter some thought, I have come to the conclusion that demerger corporate events cannot be handled correctly in Microsoft Money. My understanding is that the demerger option in money merely operates by adding shares at a certain basis cost. The problem with this is which cost does one use? For the newly created share, there seem to be two costs that are relevant. One cost is the actual basis cost of the position from a tax point of view. The second relevant cost is the cost of the position using the market price on the first day of trading. If you take the first view, the gains from a tax perspective are correct, as I admit is also the lifetime to date profitability of the position. But it has the effect of accelerating the profit of the position into a small timescale making a nonsense of performance reports (when broken down by individual periods). If you take the second point of view, the performance reports are correct, but the gain from a tax perspective is incorrect. Let me give an example: I hold a share for a couple of years which appreciates by 50% over that course of time. In the previous month, a demerger event occurs and I receive a number of shares in a new company. If the basis cost of these shares is taken to be from a tax position, then that 50% gain is accelerated into a single month giving an absurdly high monthly return on capital. If one ensures that the cost of the position is the price from the first day of trading, the monthly return on capital report makes sense, but of course the cost of the position no longer corresponds to the cost from a taxation point of view. I wondered if anyone else had a point of view on this; if my line of reasoning is correct, it implies every position really needs two costs, one is the value of the position from the time that the new position was created, and a second cost representing the basis cost of the position from a tax point of view. It seems to me that if you use Microsoft Money you have to make a choice as to which you want to track: profitability per unit time (month or whatever), or gains which are correct from a tax perspective. I am writing from the United Kingdom, where demergers are not treated as sales, but the basis cost of the old position is apportioned to the two new positions in a manner agreed with our tax authority; although I understand the tax treatment is similar in the United States. I am a bit of a geek, and I like to track my portfolio profitability by each month and quarter, and look at how profit is distributed over different time periods; I use it to track and try and estimate share and portfolio volatility. So maybe this doesn't affect too many people! There have been many posts on the topic of demergers in this board, but they all seem to focus on getting the correct basis cost for the new position, which has the unfortunate side effect of accelerating previous gains (in the old position) into the time period immediately following the new position, giving absurdly high returns on capital.     - Money 2006 / IE7 I installed IE7 RC1. When I try to sign on online, I immediately get a message telling me my signon cannot be verified and to check my internet connection. (See my earlier posts for details). I uninstalled IE7 and still had the same problem. I then uninstalled Money, ran Registry Mechanic to get rid of anything IE7, reinstalled Money, and STILL have the problem!     - Improvements To Money In Money 2005 the categories and subcategories have been added to one menu drop down. This is a real pain as a search using the first letter of the catergories often finds a sub catergoriy instead of the category you want. One of the options in the program settings should be to use the combined categories and sub categories in one drop down box or to use them separately as in all previous earlier versions of Ms Money I know you can set up short cut key to go to the subcategories but I have over 200 categories and sub categories and it would be impossible to remember the short cut keys to all of these hence using the first few letter is easiest and has been consist in all previous versions.     - Warning: Money 2007 Deluxe I thought I would try 007 out and so downloaded it. It looks very much the same as 2006 but it may have been faster. The new simple budget thing is pretty stupid, as is the hype MSN story about it. Hasn't anyone ever heard of 'pay yourself first' budgeting?? I digress. I left the program and tried to start it up again. It wants a password??? I don't use a password. The file it was trying to open was at the end of a very long pathname so I don't know what it was trying to open, but have to assume it was the one that was just converted from 006. But I don't use a password. I tried my Passport password (but it doesn't know my account name, nor is there a place to enter it). I tried a bunch of my common passwords, and I used some raunchy ones when I got frustrated. So I quit, and uninstalled 007. Oops. The uninstall process has corrupted my copy of 006, it seems. I purposely left 006 on the disk so I could look at both. Stupid me I guess; but once again MS seems to be total boobs when it comes to consumer software. Maybe they get paid too much to care. If I understand the "Accounting 101" concepts, this isn't an expense, because it's just moving a chunk of my money from one account to another.     - Investment account balance wrong I'm using MS Money 2004. I have an investment account. My MSMoney balance for this account is way of what the balance at the brokerage's site is reporting.     - Download statement problem I have a problem with Money 2006 while attempting to download a statement for one of my visa credit cards - I click the link on the banks website and Money prompts with the standard "Import complete" dialog, but instead of opening the account so I can Accept and reconcile the transactions, it takes me to the Account List screen, where it indicates 5 items to review from the statement. I click the account link to open the ledger but nothing happens. In the top-left corner it says "Item(s) to review: 5" but doesn't bold the entries and give my the opportunity to go through them and enter or match them with existing items in my ledger. I have had a similar experince with other accounts, but usually with those ones, deleteing the statement, closing Money and then redownloading from the bank have corrected it. I have not used any kind of money manager since then (bad me), and am ready to take another swing at it, so trying to decide between upgrading Money or giving Quickbooks a try. I checked the internet and then here and found that there was an upgrade method to go from 99 to 2005 and then upgrade to 2006. I must right click on the task bar and select close as it's all I can do with the program when it freezes. It is saving the transaction that was entered. But it's extremely frustrating. Cannot in my wildest dreams figure out why they wanted to make Mobile 5 platform LESS useful. More importantly MS has completely screwed up the spending tracker function.     - Continuous Money 2007 Premium updates Dear NG: Every day when I open my Money file, I receive a notice that states: "To continue operating successfully, Money requires a software update. Click OK to close Money and begin the update now." I close Money, click OK. Another notice opens that states: "Money is now ready to download the new files. To begin the installation, click OK. This problem has started in Money 2005 and has now moved to 2007.

I have two seperate credit card accounts with Citi. One account works fine.
The other "bad" account does not.

All observations are from the "View Downloaded Statements" page.

In 2005 when I attempt to update credit card balances from Citi the "Bank
Balance" would update but none of the transactions would download. The
"Local Balance" would also remain unchanged.

Now ( in 2005 and 2007) the bank balance will not update on the one "bad"
account.

The "Last Downloaded" date displays as 2/1/2079 and always has since 2005
when the problem originally started.

I have attempted to repair (quick & standard) the file to no avail.
Archiving off transactions does not work either.

I believe this is a problem with my file not Money but I do not want to
loose the info in this file and have WAY to much info to just start anew.

Any help in resolving this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Ahhh... That points to the cure. Disable online access for that
credit card. Then reenable the access. I expect that to cure things
for you.
