I "upgraded" to Money 2006 sometime last year, but have had nothing but
problems since then. In particular, performance is worse (lots of waiting)
and Money has a recurring problem with not matching downloaded transactions
to existing transactions. I'd like to find out whether I can move back to
Money 2004, and if so, what are the steps.

Thanks,
Todd

Yes you can BUT!!!

Your M2006 file cannot directly be read by M2004 so you will need to restore
the backup that Money made when it did the 2004 > 2006 upgrade and then, and
this is the killer, you must reinput all transactions sine you did the
upgrade until today.

Also be aware that the ability to do downloads times out in M2004. See the
M2004 section at http://money.mvps.org/faq/article/186.aspx. This includes
downloads from you Bank and Stocks & Share prices.

You might be able to export the M2006 transaction data into .qif files
account by account and then import those files back into M2004. I have used
this export/import routine to clean up files and it works well.

Another alternative is to buy M2002 off eBay or Amazon and import the data
back into M2002 which does not time out like 2004.

I too considered "upgrading" from 2002 to a newer version. I ran 2002 in
tandem each year while testing M2003,4,5&6 and agree that 2006 is garbage.
None of the newer versions are as clean and fast as M2002. I simply stopped
using the newer versions but had no issues since I kept 2002 up to date as
well.

Ok, thanks. I was sort of thinking there must be some common format. I
guess the only issue is whether 2006 and 2004 (or 2002) can coexist. From
your comments below, it sounds like they can. Does anyone know?

There's a new feature in 2007 called "Bills be gone" or "Nuke the Bills"
which is reported to have a miraculous effect on speed. See

You can have both 2002 and 2007 on your computer at the same time,
installed into different folders. You can have them open, one at a
time. If you want to do that, be careful to not have Money 2007
uninstall earlier versions. I think that might be the default, so be
alert.

They will need to work with different files, so might want
to copy your earlier file to Something07.mny and convert that
file. Each version will have its own MRU (most recently used)
list to remember which file to open.

The only caveats I can think of are the last-installed is set up
with the file associations, so if you double-click a file in
Windows Explorer, then Money 2007 would try to open it. Similarly,
when you download an OFX or QIF, the last installed gets fed the
file. To feed the file to both, save the file to disk, and do
File->Import to both. Just clicking a link sends the file to the
last-installed. You could manually adjust the associations, or
could reinstall 2002 to reset the associations.

If you decide to not use Money 2007, don't uninstall it. Uninstall
uninstalls 2007, but it makes previous versions not work. I think
it removes some shared component(s). You will be warned during
uninstall.

Could the user not uninstall M07, then reinstall the older version to get
back the necessary shared components?

Probably.
