Is there any way to move an existing category to make it a
sub-category of another existing category ?

So basically you can't do it. You can only move the
transactions within the category to a new sub-category of
the same name. I'm sure older versions of Money allowed
you just to select the category to move and then select
the master category to attach it to from a list instead of
having to type the whole category name !

Thanks for you help anyway.

What do you mean "you can't do it"???

If you want to move every transaction in subcategory Miscellaneous:Stuff to
the newly created subcategory Food:Stuff, you do exactly that in the Move
dialog box. The only requirement is that if Stuff doesn't exist in Food, you
have to type out Stuff.

Perhaps the issue you are complaining about stems form the setting for
Tools|Options|Categories|Use a single list for categories... If this is set
on, you may have to type out the whole category: before you type your new
subcategory. Alternately, you can select the top level category from the
pulldown and then just type in your new :Subcategory (which, if you are
trying to retain the subcategory name, will be the same as the existing
source one.)

I don't believe this has changed in Money in a long time. It's certainly
been confusing people who are trying to move intact subcategories for a long
time.

I sure didn't think that was what I was conveying. Move can do the
job.

I can do it. But I have
Tools->Options->Categories->UseASingeleList... cleared-- what Dick
alluded to.

In Help, enter "move" into the Ask Money box. Choose "Combine
Categories and SubCategories" for a description of using Move.

If you want to leave the existing category intact, but just change
the category chosen for transactions, you can also use Find and
Replace. In Help, enter "move" into the Ask Money box. Choose
"Change information in a group of transactions".

Thanks for your help gentlemen and apologies for the fit
of spleen. You're right, I do have that box ticked !

I just get a little frustrated when I have spent hours
wrestling with this. I find that the more features that
get added, the harder it seems to be to do basic things
e.g. why does it not ask how you paid for it when you add
an asset ? The only way to do this seems to be to add the
asset at zero value and then do a transfer from the
account used to purchase it (or is this another setting I
have wrong :-)

The way Money looks at things is a little different from
standard accounting packages that I am used to using at
work (mainly in the split between accounts/categories so
that Assets/Liabilities are treated differently from
Income/Expenses) - but it is a good package for SOHO use.
