SP 1 did not fix the back up bug.

If you have chosen to be prompted to Back Up
before Money closes then choose File > Close
The "Back Up When Money Closes" window
opens.

You're given the button options of "Settings...",
"Back Up Now" and "Postpone".

Each being self explanatory.

However, if you change your mind about
closing Money, clicking the red "X" in the
upper right hand corner of the window,
closes Money as if you chose the "Postpone"
button instead of just closing the window and
letting you return to using Money.

I know that this bug has been present for a few
versions now. I wish MS would address it.

Beleive I should better explain it is designed so if you close money quickly
and walk away from the computer another user cannot go click the X and play

I agree completely but its been suggested during beta and its By Design this
may not be the reason but only reason I can think of MS also stated would be
too hard to rescript the backup dialog which I dont see why it only takes
two minutes to add the code for it

By that logic, if you told the computer to shut down and you walked

Re: Money 07 SP1 still has a bug. by Dick

Dick

Not completely.

There are MANY issues with Backup. Your's is maybe a valid point.

(Though I'll bet it's not considered a bug as Steve notes. The designer had
to pick some behavior for the close event. Why would you assume that he'd
pick cancel? I think once you've clicked close in Money, that's what it
should do. I guess I agree the close button on the dialog box is silly and
superfluous. And I agree with the poster who suggested the backup now choice
should have a timeout. I didn't close it for the fun of it and I don't want
it hanging around forever. I've had this happen many times.

Generally this happens to me because I miss my "scheduled" seventh day
backup to floppies and, not wanting to get Money off schedule, back it up by
hand to floppies on the eight or ninth day. This doesn't satisfy its urge
for the scheduled backup and it will nag for the rest of the week. If I
forget it's gonna nag, I'll Close and wander upstairs while it's doing the
on-exit compressed backup--too boring to watch. When I come back the next
morning, here's the nag sitting on the screen and I then don't trust my
11:55pm scheduled task scripted copy of the original file--made in part
because .MBFs are not always equal to .MNYs and pre-dating the ability of
Money's backup to keep multiple copies--to yet another safe store on the net
since it was made while Money was still, ahem, running.)

But there are many other issues with Backup.

Personally, I'm at a loss why I have to hand delete the old file on floppies
(nine times) to overwrite it with a new one.

I'm also at a loss why all backups like the scheduled backup don't get
treated as satisfying the scheduled backup.

Both of these were also behaviors it **used** to have.

I'm also at a loss about the apparent correlation between "Money is already
running" and something to do with how backup-on-exit terminates.

The real issue is that the whole thing is being designed for the lowest
common denominator user by people who, apparently, never actually use the
thing themselves and don't test it at all that much depth either. At some
point, you just dumb it down too much for it to still be usable to anybody
with even the slightest hint of a clue. That's the real issue that should
get fixed. Everything else is just a detail. That was my point.

DW,
Sooo you were being cynical :-)

I've never used the "Scheduled" backup in Money. I'll
have it "Automatically" back up the 7 most recent copies.

Once a week, I'll run MS Backup on the .mny file.

Do your .mbf files actually fit on a floppy? Mine usually
run about 2.5 MBs.

<The designer had to pick some behavior for the close event.>
<Why would you assume that he'd pick cancel?>

Because cancel is what the "X" used to do. And it was better!

Invariably as soon as you hit File > Close, you remember the one
thing you forgot to check or do. It was a nice feature to be able to
back out of the shut down routine.

The question is: Why did he "change" the event? The dumbing
down thing is disgraceful.

Let's face it, Money is a program that's primarily, if not exclusively
used at home. The whole malicious tampering threat just doesn't
cut it.

Thanks again for your replies.

-Kevin

I'm only realistic as Money is concerned. It just seems cynical.

My backups to floppy take 9 floppies (was 12 before Nuke The Bills). It's a
pain, but it's just one more form of the many I create manually and
automagically. Even an epic EMP event would leave me only going back
approximately 6 months, provided the DVD(s) in my safe deposit box survived.

But would you, with all the metal stuff flying around?

Tough to say; depends on what the miss distance was. In the worst case, the
Money data would be the least of any of our problems. There are also,
reportedly, ways to create significant EMP events without the most serious
side effects.

No version of Money seems to be able to cancel Online Updates when it =
hangs because one of your online providers doesn't answer (this applies =
to quotes updates as well). You hit cancel and it just continues to =
spin. I invariably have to CTR-ALT-DEL and end the program.

SP 1 did not fix the back up bug.

If you have chosen to be prompted to Back Up
before Money closes then choose File > Close
The "Back Up When Money Closes" window
opens.

You're given the button options of "Settings...",
"Back Up Now" and "Postpone".

Each being self explanatory.

However, if you change your mind about
closing Money, clicking the red "X" in the
upper right hand corner of the window,
closes Money as if you chose the "Postpone"
button instead of just closing the window and
letting you return to using Money.

I know that this bug has been present for a few
versions now. I wish MS would address it.

SteveC,
Agreed. Although, on occasion, I HAVE had Online Updates eventually time
out.
But that's a bug of a different nature.
