I use 2 files with Microsoft Money (a) personal (b) for my firm.
File (a) works ok - fast.
File (b) from installing Money 2006 it's work very, very slowly.
- I must wait over 5 minuts from open to start work
- Entering in budget last next 5 minues...

I made repaires but nothing changed.

File (a) has 21MB, file (b) 19MB

Any suggestions?

I thing that in Money Database there is missing one or more indexes. How can
I recreate them? (During repair it is possible to drop index by ISAM
engone - I know this from Microsoft Access program...)

Change your start page with
Tools->Settings->ProgramSettings->(Display:)StartMoneyWithThisPageOpen:AccountList

The rest of these may be worth trying:

Remove the Investment Performance and other things you may not care
about from your Money Home page.
Tools->Settings->HomePageDisplaySettings

Disable automatic download of Quotes.

Consider removing the Passport from that file if you are not using
the features that require it.

Consider reducing scheduled transactions.

Consider removing accounts from the budget by right-clicking the
accounts in the account list, and going to account settings.

Peter,

What is the size of your File (a)?

Here's what I would suggest for the other file - File (b).

Open it at some time that it would be convenient to leave the file open
for a long time (shouldn't be longer than an hour).

If you want, montior the Task File Manager in order to see the process
activity of msmoney.exe.

Once msmoney.exe subsides to low or zero activity, use your money file
in the normal (?) manner and let us know if things are different.

If your wait is more than an hour, and depending on your patience, let
us know how long (BEFORE you decide to close or end Money) that you are
able to perform any useful work in Money.

Your issue is important and we want to know your observations. Please
post back!

Regards,
JB

That sounds like an interesting situation. If you would like
Microsoft to take a look at that problem file, I can ask somebody
from Microsoft to contact you directly. Your email address looks
valid.

Also, what version are you using? Business? You can do Help->About
to get the version number.

If somebody does contact you from Microsoft, you would want to
confirm that your reply to that email does go back to a
*.microsoft.com address. We don't want you to get spoofed.

I left open file (b) for... 4 hours. After it:
- all work well
- entering into budget - ok
- editing budget: moving from 1st step to 2nd: over half of minute.

After close and open again:
- I must wait 2-3 minute to see first form
- program does something in backgroud for next 3 minutes
- after it: entering in budget last over 1 minut - (is it normal?)

PS. Please: move Money from Jet to SQLServer :-)
PS2. I have 2xPentiumIII 450MHz.

Peter,

Thanks for the response. The reason I asked again about your file (a)
was I couldn't believe the larger file worked faster than the smaller.

Nevertheless, while PentiumIII 450MHz (is that 2x machines or 2x
processors?) is certainly on the very low end of recommended
requirements, what you're seeing with your file (b) is not unusual in
my experience. The only difference is that with me the larger the file
the longer it takes from Money start to perform certain functions
usefully. A 30Mb file of mine takes 6 minutes for startup background
activity to subside. A 15Mb file takes about 2 minutes.

I suppose I need to also check budget which I don't fool with much. It
appears this is a feature of importance to you and I can understand
your frustration.

I have an open case with Microsoft regarding this type of problem. It
has just moved from initial "cut and paste" responses to "escalation".
Their most recent response indicates an awareness of this issue so I've
got my fingers crossed for a future patch. I'll let you know if I
learn anything helpful. Hope you can get results from your own case
with them. Please let us know if they can shed any light on your
experience. Thanks.

Regards,
JB

This is 2 processors PC with VERY fast disks + 0.5GB memory - it is OK for
all my work. I have second computer: Pentium IV 2.6GHz if we need it for
some testes.

File (a) is my home file. File (b) is my firm file with 4 accounts only. But
there is a lot of data: from 2000 year...

>
> I suppose I need to also check budget which I don't fool with much. It

NO. This function isn't importance for me (I need a budget based on second
classification :-) ). But this is a good test for slow working. I try find a
place (table in database), which is connected with my problem, and budget is
my test-point (maybe I'm wrong, maybe not).

I can add than in Money 2005 (in file (b)) after creating new 'recurring
bill' I had to wait 1-2 minutes after program start responding... Now is
better, but start of Money 2006 is very long (maybe mothing was moved from
'just after creating recuring bill' to 'start of program' :-) ).

PS. I can add one more bug:
- From account form I create a 'recurring bill': I change splits. I accept
bill.
- When I enter in the same 'recurring bill' from 'bill summary': everything
is changed EXCEPT spits: they are old! (sum of splits is not equal to sum of
bill!)
- I must enter again in splits and corrent then
This bug is in... more than 3 version of Money 200x :-)

Thanks for elaborating. Your platform certainly appears more than
adequate!

I would assume both files have a lot of data based on the sizes. Is it
just the age of the data?

This is my experience as well. It does seem that the long wait on
start does lead to quicker response later. Don't know if I'd consider
it an even trade-off though!

It could have 100 processors and the only thing that would matter to Money
is the 450 MHz. All indications are that Money is not threaded or designed
for any parallel processing in any way that will take advantage of more than
one CPU.

Given the quoted system requirements for M06, you'd like to think it would
run usably fast on a 450 MHz machine. I'm not sure that anyone with a
reasonably mature set of Money data who has tried a machine anywhere near
the quoted minimum--by anywhere near, I mean in the same clock order of
magnitude--has found it to be much of anything besides bordering on unusably
slow. Sad, but that's the way it is.

Why, with a 2.6 GHz P4, are you messing with M06 on a 450MHz PIII? You
probably won't think it zippy or responsive on the P4. On the 450 MHz PIII
(with 1, 10, or 100 CPUs)? Fuggeddaboutit.

Nobody outside of the product developers really knows what its choke points
are. Number of loan accounts and number of scheduled bills may be factors.
Number/nature of Advisor FYIs may be involved. There could be lots of other
things. "Corruption" of the file (Money self-mangling its own data files)
may be a factor. Who knows?

For your information, Piotr, the Microsoft person you been working
with has been replying to all of your emails. It may be that those
replies are being caught by your junk mail or some other email
filters.

So, if he cannot find those emails that explain how to access and
use the Workspace site replies, could you simply attach your
"sanitized" file in another reply to the email you did receive?

Your data is in Microsoft hands? They've never offered to repair my data,
despite not being able to sync with MSN Money. I'm not certain I'd want to
leave it there, but I can't even if I wanted to, due to 'file corruption'.
Their final suggestion was export everything to QIF, then reimport. That
loses budget, scheduled payments, loans, etc. No big deal, of course.
