Hello - I have searched around on the internet and this group, but
cannot find this exact problem. I am not too hopeful for a solution,
but here goes:

I have MS Money 2005, and NEVER set up a .NET passport account for it.
I never got a prompt to enter the passport info when it started, just
went right in. NOW when I start Money, I am getting a prompt to enter
the passport information. "Type the sign-in information for the
Microsoft .NET passport you use for your Money file" Well, that does
not exist, so of course it does not work. I'm not sure why it suddenly
started asking for this, but I can't figure out a way around it.
Thanks.

Have you by any chance reinstalled Money or moved to a new PC?

No, I have done absolutely nothing. Just one day it started doing
this. All I can figure is that it was some automatic update?

When you get home, the first thing you should do is to copy your
backup file to a new place or name. Starting with Money 2006, Money
makes keeps more than one backup file by default. You should not
have just one backup file. Also copy it to different media, such as
a USB flash drive, if you don't have such a copy from recent times.

Then check your version. If you have trouble opening Money to get
the version, you can open Money by opening the sample.mny in the
install folder.

Assuming that you find the version to be 14.0.*.1105, you would
probably want to restore your latest backup.

I do keep a backup on a flash drive.

When I go to sample.mny, it tells me it cannot open it. (It gives me
that box - In order to open this file, Windows needs to know what
created it - look at a list or access the web buttons) Maybe I need to
reinstall Money??

Yes. Reinstall from the original disk now.

If using XP, install as an Administrative user. Then either open the
sample.mny file in your install folder, or let Money 2005 create a
new Money file, clicking Decline in the process. It will do an
update. Close Money. Then open Money and check that Help->About...
says you then have version 14.0.*.1105.

Then you should be able to open or restore your existing files.

For Vista, be sure that your Money and backup files are in a spot
that you will have full privileges to, such as
Documents/MyDocuments. If they are in a place like ProgramFiles,
Vista will create an impermanent copy of the file for the user to
use, unless the user explicitly right-clicks at launch and choose
RunAsAdministrator that time.

Check that the SSL2 protocol is enabled. That checkbox is in
IE Tools->InternetOptions->Advanced.

Install Money from the Money 2005 install disk by browsing to the
setup.exe file. Right-click that file, and choose
RunAsAdministrator.

Then open Money by double-clicking the sample.mny file in your
install folder. Close Money. Open Money again by right-clicking
its launch icon and choosing RunAsAdministrator. It will do an
update. Close Money. Reboot the computer. Then open Money and
check that Help->About... says you then have version 14.0.*.1105.
Then you should be able to open your real Money file.

Thanks - the computer is showing signs of other problems right now, so
I am going to order some memory first to see if that helps the other
problems, then go back and try to reinstall.
