Ok, I have a desktop with Vista and laptop with XP home. I use the notebook
when Im away at work and the Vista desktop when Im home. When I got home I
wanted my money file from the notebook to be transfered to the desktop
but... when I copy the file from the notebook to my external USB HD and then
paste it to the desktop to replace the existing one the file does not
reflect changes made on the file version on the notebook. When I copy the
file from the notebook to the USB HD and then open it it shows one balance.
but when I then paste that file to the desktop it shows a different balance
that is not up to date. I am flabbergassted. So it seems that the file is
specific to whatever machine it is opened on.

What the hell? Does anyone know why? The only thing I can think of is that
the money file is listed as an application like a program file. Ideas
anyone?

Thanks in advance to any help given. I have Money 2007. The notebook has XP
home and the desktop has Visat premium.

My first guess would be that the two implementations are opening different
files. By default, Money wants to open the data file from its program
folder in "Program Files\Microsoft Money 2007". That's a bad place to keep
your data file, especially in Vista. Data files need to be in "Documents"
or "My Documents", depending on the OS version.

Option 1:
1. Move your data file to "C:\Documents\Finance\My Money.mny".
2. Right-click and drag this file to your desktop on both machines.
3. Choose "Create Shortcuts Here" to make a shortcut to the data file
instead of to the Money .exe file. This will guarantee that you open the
correct data file instead of whatever file Money had open the last time
you closed it.
4. Put these shortcuts wherever you like, then faithfully use them to run
Money.

Option 2:
1. Leave the "real" Money data file on whichever machine you want.
2. Create a shortcut on the other machine pointing across the network to
the "real" file on the other PC.
3. Use this shortcut to open Money.
Downside: Opening the file over the network is slower.

Thanks Steve for the speedy reply. But... My money file on the Vista desktop
is in C:\users\greg\documents. The shortcut on the desktop points to that
location. I did not find a folder called finance. My money file on the XP
notebook is in C:\documents and settings Greg Bean\My documents.

Thanks again for your efforts.

Money by default opens your last file opened. Steve is correct you have to
be opening the wrong Money File. On your Vista Machine create a folder on
your desktop and copy your money file from your laptop in here. With Money
closed Right click on the Money File in the folder and run as admin this
will open the correct file. The short cut on your desktop is pointing to the
last file you had opened which was the incorrect file.

Hi Andy, thanks for the input. Heres what I just did. before I did this the
money file on both machine were identical. Then I did a fictitious
transaction for 5 dollars on the file in the laptop. Then I copied that file
to my USB HD. Then I plugged the USB HD into the Vista desktop. I created a
folder called my money on the Desktop machine. Then I pasted the file from
the USB HD into that folder. Then I right clicked on the file that I just
pasted and clicked "run as administrator" and..... opened the file and it
"did not" reflect the change I just made on the laptop.

Any more ideas? Note: I really do appreciate everyones input.

I suspect the file on your laptop is one that isn't where you think it
is.

Copy the file from the USB back to the laptop, then open it there. I bet
the transaction is missing there, too.

To simplify things, pick one file, laptop or desktop, to forevermore
treat as the master file. Give that file a descriptive name--anything
except "My Money". Copy it to all the places you want it to live. Now
open Money and observe the name it displays in the window header.

If you haven't already, change the settings on Windows Explorer to
display system files and to show file extensions. These two settings
cause more confusion for my clients than any other settings. I would
strangle the genius at Microsoft who decided clients don't need to be
able to find all their files.

Is the system date on both computers correct?

Do you happen to have your View set to show other than "All Dates"?

I suspect the file on your laptop is one that isn't where you think it
is. The file that Im copying from the laptop is in C:\my documents. The
locale that Im pasting it to on the desktop is C:\users\greg\documents.

Copy the file from the USB back to the laptop, then open it there. I bet
the transaction is missing there, too.

I did that too and.... the transaction is "NOT" missing from there too.

This is insane!

Re: Money 2007 file wont update from one computer to another by Greg

Greg

Mark, you freaked me out when you asked about the system dates. cause.... I
use the laptop in the south in the Central time zone and sometimes I forget
to switch it back to eastern when I get back to MI. and this case I did
forget. So... I changed the time zone on the laptop to eastern and tried the
same procedure again and.... to no avail. I changed the time zone to eastern
and then opened the file on the laptop and observed the 5 dollar transaction
in the file then I closed it. then I copied it once again to the external,
pasted it to the Vist desktop machine to my documents and guess what it
still did not reflect the 5 dollar change.

Also: I agree with whichever of you it was that said you would like to
strangle the people at MS who came up with the idea of hiding files from the
user. And I can think of other reasons but I would like to give them repeated
blows to the head with a blunt obtuse object.

Shall I continue on day 3 of this dilemma? It would be nice if I could go on
to something more productive.

At the upper left corner of the screen where you view your account, you'll
find a label "View:" with a box next to it. Click the drop-down arrow on
the box and make sure you have a dot next to "All Dates" and "All
Transactions".

Most settings are stored in the data file, but you never know what some
developer decided to store in the registry. Oh, for the days when every
single option was stored in an INI file....

OK Steve, That was a good point to try and I hadn't thought of it. but....
both options are dotted. Show all dates and show all transactions on both

Perhaps my computer should be profiled on Unsolved Computer Mysteries.

Sigh... when was the last time you heard the term "structured
programming"? :-|

I have never heard the term "structured programing" but Im just a user, not
a developer.
About this MS Money file dilemma, I was thinking maybe I could try loading
the program on my brothers machine that has XP.
Then try to copy the money file to there and see what happens. Maybe its a
Vista issue. His machine has MS Money 2003 I have 2007 premium on my
notebook and desktop.

I paid all my bills yesterday. So I entered all the data on the desktop. I
then had to print out a register sheet and re-enter the same data again in
the laptop.
Im glad all this techno stuff is making my life simple.

Hope you are all having a good day.

Some additional thoughts/suggestions:

You mentioned that you checked the time zone on your computers.
But I don't see that you explicitly said that you confirmed that the dates
were correct (i.e. today)
Also confirm Windows Regional Settings. It may be something unexpected like
one of the machines is set to DD/MM/YYY format instead of MM/DD/YYYY

Also, (I think this may have already been mentioned), since you are using
Vista, make sure that you are copying your .MNY file into a fully accessible
location (i.e. your "Documents" folder), since Vista has much stricker
access control over what it considers "Program Files"

The dates are correct and set to 4 digit years. And the files are stored in

Wow -- a blast from the past!

Structured programming was just coming into vogue when I was doing my
graduate work in computer science. Then I implemented a structured
programming methodology using FORTRAN at my company a few years later.
That was like pulling teeth.

Thanks for the memories.

"Structured Programming" mostly means don't use GOTO statements. Every
chunk (and subchunk) of code should have one entrance at the top and one
exit at the bottom. It's an attempt to make computer code "proveable",
kind of like a mathematical proof.

In the old style of programming, the code went along, step by step in an
orderly fashion, until something unusual happened. Then a GOTO statement
jumped you out to go handle the problem. Unfortunately, the target piece
of code often had a GOTO to another piece, and that piece had another
GOTO. Pretty soon, you can't figure out where you were. Often there was a
GOTO right back to where you started, and you were stuck in a loop. This
is lovingly known as "spaghetti code". Lazy programmers love GOTOs. It's
easier to stick one in than to completely rewrite the section that has a
problem.

Actually I was more concerned with the "day/month" versus "month/day" format
rather than the year (My mistake for leaving off a Y in the example).

Oh, and did you rename the file as Steve suggested? For example to "Gregs
Money.mny"
That would remove any "same file name but different file" issues
Be sure to double check that it is the same file by trying it on both
machines. (Look in Money's title bar afer you start Money, it should
indicate the file name. e.g. "Gregs Money - Microsoft Money")

All right, I'll check the date formats again. And I had a shortcut to my
money file called Gregs Money but that was a shortcut.
I try your latest post and see what happens and get back to ya. Although I
don't think there will be a difference cause I've checked and re-checked the
files on both machines as to the names and locale's.
And as for the explanation about Structured programming, thanks maybe I can
impress my friends even though I have no idea what the hell it means.

Hi Greg,

I use Money version 2001 on both computers.

Home desktop computer is WindowsMe, laptop is Windows XP.

I work directly from my money file on USB device

In other words, when USB is plugged into desktop computer and I click on
desktop Microsoft Money icon, it opens the money file on USB device.

When on the road with my laptop, I plug the same USB device into it. When I
click on it's desktop Microsoft Money icon it opens the money file on USB
device.

I have never noticed, in all these years, a difference in the USB money file
data displayed between these computers.

I know some will say you shouldn't work directly from USB device, perhaps it
is a little slower to load, but it works for me.

Also on both computers I have the settings set so a backup is made to the
hard drive when Money is closed.

Here is my suggestion........ lets work with Moneys Sample file (sample.mny)

This should help you confirm both computers are opening the same money file.

Create a folder on your USB device, name it Test.

On your XP, find and copy sample.mny into USB Test folder.

Open Money from desktop icon.

On it's file menu choose Open.

In displayed Open dialog window, browse to and select USB device, Test
folder, then select sample.mny, click Open.

Assuming the file opened, observe what you see in checking account, close
Money.

Take the USB device to your Vista.

Open Money on Vista using desktop icon.

On it's file menu choose Open.

In displayed Open dialog window, browse to and select USB device, Test
folder, then select sample.mny, click Open.

Does the same info display as you observed on XP?

If so, make two small entries in the checking account, one with today's
date, the other with earlier date.

Close Money.

Take USB device back to XP.

Open Money from desktop icon.

Does sample file display and does it have both changes you made to checking
account?.

If so, make a couple more small changes to checking account, close money.

Take USB device to Vista.

Open from desktop icon.

Does sample file display with those changes you made to checking account?

Hope this helps with your trouble shooting.
Ken

| Ok, I have a desktop with Vista and laptop with XP home. I use the
notebook
| when Im away at work and the Vista desktop when Im home. When I got home I
| wanted my money file from the notebook to be transfered to the desktop
| but... when I copy the file from the notebook to my external USB HD and
then
| paste it to the desktop to replace the existing one the file does not
| reflect changes made on the file version on the notebook. When I copy the
| file from the notebook to the USB HD and then open it it shows one
balance.
| but when I then paste that file to the desktop it shows a different
balance
| that is not up to date.
|
|
The notebook has
XP
| home and the desktop has Visat premium.

OK Ken, I did the procedure you gave me. On the last trip back to Vista
machine I opened money from the desktop and it opened my regular money file
not the sample file. then I clicked open on money and opened the sample file
in test folder and it "DID" reflect the changes. So... you are on to
something but Im not sure what. What does this indicate? again let me add
that the file Iv'e been trying to copy from XP is C:\documents and
settings\Greg\My documents which is the file Ive been using for months. And
Iv'e been pasting it to Vista in C:\Users\Greg\Documents which is where my
money file has been residing there.
Shall I continue into day 3 of this dilemma?

I'll have to think on this for a while.

Thanks man!
