Upgrading to SP1, and I'm having a problem that, it seems, no one else is
having. I get the message that Money requires a software update, so I click
OK. It looks like it's about to go for about a half second but then the
little dialog with the meter flashes out of existence and is replaced by
another that says:

"Money failed to download the necessary files for a software update.
Security software on your computer may have interfered, or the servers that
provide the download may be temporarily unavailable. Check your firewall,
anti-virus, or other security software for settings that may be blocking this
download, or simply wait a few minutes and then try again."

This has been going on for days, so scratch the "waiting" part off the list.

I've completely removed Norton Antivirus and made sure Windows Firewall was
off. And I have no other security software running.

So I've done the obvious. Anyone else have any ideas?

Norton has a love/hate relationship with Money and has regarded Money as a
virus in the past. I would recommend that once you have removed Norton, you
then reinstall Money. Next open the sample.mny file and see if you can
update from there. If OK then reinstall Norton.

You can also just disable "realtime filesystem protection" during
the installation of Money and achieve the same results.

Thank you for the help. I have Norton removed from my system and replaced it
with Windows Live OneCare, but disabled everything to try reinstalling Money.
It still gave me the same message though.

I don't understand exactly what is supposed to be going on during the
upgrade, but I did run into an issue while removing Norton and installing
Windows Live OneCare thay may be related. For some reason, Windows does not
want to install ActiveX components or MSI files (or something like that). I
first ran into this while trying to install Defender (Microsoft's
Antispyware) when the Windows Validation ActiveX control wouldn't run.
Later, I found I couldn't download a direct link to the install MSI file. I
haven't been able to find a solution to that yet, but hopefully this is an
unrelated issue.

Have you tried creating a new user (with local Admin rights) and installing
through that user?
It may be the the user profile you're currently signing into is corrupted.

In any case if you have problems installing ActiveX and MSI files, then that
would be the reasond Money is failing to install/update.

Nope, I haven't tried that one yet. I'm guessing the problem is with the
whole ActiveX/MSI thing. I'm going to do more research in that direction
first. However, if anyone knows what that issue is about, don't be shy about
posting!

Re MSI problems, you might take a look at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/en-us, which discusses the Windows
Installer Cleanup Utility. I used this when I was unable to either uninstall
or install Office. Who knows - it may be a clue. The MS service person also
advised me to manually remove registry keys for the program involved, clear
temporary files, empty the recycle bin, and restart windows (after using the
Cleanup Utility) before attempting to reinstall the program.

Thanks for the suggestion, Joaneee, but it appears that my issues run much
deeper than that. I can't even download the Installer Cleanup Utility. It's
not the install that's the problem - I just can't seem to download anything
from Microsoft for some reason. It's driving me nuts.

Problem solved and SP1 update applied.

The problem was in my router/modem. The I had to manually put the address
of the DNS servers into my TCP/IP configuration. After that happened, I was
able to download the update, and a whole host of other issues I discovered
along the way were solved too. It was only 1 site that DNS couldn't resolve
- download.microsoft.com - a pretty big issue when working with Microsoft
products!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

Jen,
DNS servers resolve IP addresses into usable names. For example: the
IP address 65.220.224.30 would resolve to www.pcworld.com.
It makes it easier for you to type in www.pcworld.com than it is to try to
remember the websites IP address.
This of course holds true for all websites.

OK enough schooling.

Probably the easiest way to find out what the IP address of your DNS
servers are would be to contact your ISP.
Another way is if you know how to access your router/gateway's user
interface.
(Assuming your using a router/gateway)
You will find the DNS server IP addresses (usually two) there.

If your not using a router/gateway:
Click Start then Run... type in "cmd" (no quotes) and hit OK
A DOS window will open. Type "ipconfig /all" (no quotes) and hit
Enter. (There is a space between ipconfig and /all)
You should see all of your adapters information including your DNS
server IP addresses.

Once you have the DNS server IP addresses: (assuming you have windows XP)
Go into the Control Panel (catagory view) open Network and Internet
Connections
then Network Connections. (classic view) open Network Connections.

Right click on the name of your internet connection and choose Properties.
In the "This connection uses the following items" section, highlight
Internet
Protocol (TCP/IP). (Be careful not to "uncheck" it) then click on the
Properties button.

Choose the "Use the following DNS server addresses:" radio button and
enter your DNS server IP addresses. Click OK and OK again.

You might need to reboot but that should do it.

Hope this helps.

-Kevin
