Used Money 2004 several years on XP. Installed Vista Business last week. The
only Money setup disk I have is 2005 Standard. Installed it and got the
updates. Set up an account named (mybank)Banking that shows $0 balance.

When I try to open .mny file from Money, the program sends me to the sign-in
window. The fields in the sign-in window are auto-filled. It does not matter
whether I check the Work Offline field or not, the same thing happens. There
is a brief glimpse of a progress popup, then it goes right back to the
Sign-in window.

If I ask Money to find all backups, it comes up with two files, My money
0.mbf and My money 1.mbf. I don't know which one to restore. Too confusing
for this old man. And to top it off, my files contain 5 years of data. No way
I'm switching to some other program.

What am I doing wrong?

I am not sure. I think maybe Money is remembering your temporary
file that you created rather than using your old one.

I would close Money. Then do Start->Search for "*.mny,*.mbf" without
the quotes on your hard drive.

To distinguish which backup is more recent, look at the date for the
file. Also look at the size to make sure it is not the backup for
that temporary file you created. When you select one, right-click
the backup file and choose Open. That will start Money and start the
restore process. Do not take the default location. Instead Browse to
your MyDocuments folder and specify a new name.

To open a *.mny file, you can do the same right-click and Open for
the file.

Once you find the file you want to work with, Money will remember
the last-used file.

Review your backup procedures while you are at it.

thank you so much, Cal. I will perform those tasks and see how it goes and
let you and the community know. I will also review my backup procedures. Mike

Cal, I found the .mny and .mbf files. I now have this problem. After I open
the files exactly as you advised, the program requires that I sign on.
Couldn't do it the first time so I did the "Forgot password" thing and reset
my password to something I will always remember. I then went back in but got
the message that my password was incorrect. I am at wits end. Have been
trying to get this going for a week and cannot get at my data. Please...

I don't understand the implications of the
:'"Forgot password" thing and reset
:"my password to something I will always remember." '
thing. I hope you keep copies of your files. Certainly if you try
to work offline, you will need the password used when the file was
last opened then closed.

Is your version now 14.0.*.1105?

Assuming you are in the US, I would try installing the Money Plus
trial on a different computer (your laptop, a friends, at work, etc)
and see if it could open your file. Note that some versions will
give a bad password indication if you try to open a file created
with a newer version. I am wondering if the file might, for example,
be from Money 2006. Trying Money Plus Deluxe would solve the
problem, and based on the filename it used for the backup during the
conversion you could tell what version of file had been converted.

For any *.mny files (not *.mbf) files, you can use salv.exe to not
only fix up files, but to see if you have the password right.

My version is 14.0.80.1105. Live in TN.
Every time I click the Money icon on my desktop, the login window appears. I
must have forgotten the password used when I set the program up. Anyway, I
clicked on "Forgot Password" and the resulting process allowed me to set a
new password which I can now remember because it's on a sticky on my pc. I
have a usb memory stick on which the program puts my backup and .mny files. I
use the program's Backup process always. I don't just "copy" them to the
stick.

I may have forgotten to tell you that when I started using Money, it was an
earlier version than 2005, as far as I know. It may have been 2003 or 4. I
doubt that I had the 2006 version, because the only disk I possess is 2005.
Yet I do remember a while back getting an email or maybe a web notification
that an update was available to 2006. I also made a recovery dvd when I
cleaned the hard drive for a clean install of Vista, so maybe something on
that would give a clue. I don't know what to do, though.

I'm sorry this is such a pain, Cal, but I realize the forums are for goofs
like me. I am 70 years old and trying to get into the "new world" and it
ain't easy. Been working on computers since 1985 and thought I knew enough,
but this Money thing is driving me nuts.

just realized something after re-reading your last reply:
Before Vista I had XP MCE. Never had to enter username or password in Money
in those days because it remembered my data each time, and all I had to do
was click "work offline" and click OK, and I was in. Therefore, the last time
I sucessfully opened, worked on and backed up Money was before Vista. I have
no idea what that login or password was.

So let's review. You could not open any of your old filenames. Then
you took an action to change your password and you still can not
open any of your old Money files.

I suggest you actually copy of what you have now to different
filenames. It would be a shame to overwrite your good backup from
before with a back

Let's check: do you remember having a password on the file
previously, or is it possible you did not have a password on it?
up from a new almost empty file.

Do you have a *.mny file with a date stamp from before you started
having problems? If so, I would make an extra copy of that under a
new name. Then I would find salv.exe and see if you can make a
repaired version of that file under a new name. I am hoping it did
not ask for a password. It will if you actually had a password on
the file.

one more thing: the extensions on some of the files I had before all this
were .m12 and .m14. The extensions on the current files in my pc are .mny and
.mbf. The filenames on my memory stick are My Money 07 backup d1.mbf
8/25/2007 7:40am 498KB, My Money Backup d1.mbf 8/20/207 1061KB, and a temp
file rw1.tmp 8/25/2007 0KB. I know these are compressed files, but must tell
you that the files on my hard drive at this time are an .mny with 3240KB and
two .mbf files with 3242KB. One .mbf has the numeral 0 in its name, and the
other has 1 in its name. Both are dated the same but the times are different,
by about 2 hours.

I find the Passport/LiveID methods to be things I don't understand.
Once you have reset that password seem even more mysterious to me.

I think you need help from somebody who understands Passport/LiveID
usage on your file. I would consider contacting Microsoft support
via http://support.microsoft.com/money and consider getting a paid
support incident.

Here is a search that could offer useful info.

In microsoft.public.money, Mike F from TN wrote:

.m12 is from Money 2004 and .m14 is from Money 2005. That .m14
typically would be formed during the conversion from the initial
version of Money 2005 to the updated Money 2005 14.0.*.1105 version.

I suspect the most valuable file you have right now is the *.m12
file. It is a copy of your file as it existed before the conversion
attempt. Copy that onto different media such as a USB hard drive.

Then copy it to Mike2.mny and try opening that file. Expect a
Mike2.m12 (another copy of the same) and mike2.mny to be the
resulting Money file. Try dealing with your passport issues with
that by File->Open of mike2.mny. I think it will ask for a Passport
(email address and password) if you first in IE select
File->WorkOFfline, it would be the old one. If you are online from
IE's point of view, I am not sure what state you are in. [I
understand you are not in Tunisia, who's country code is TN. ;-) ]

And again, consider getting paid help if your attempts don't
succeed. And take good care of copies of that .m12 file.

Also, think about what your original login might have been (Passport
I expect). It might pop into your head.

Paragraph 1: correct
Paragraph 2: have not done this yet. Will wait till you reply, as I sent
another question to you that you have not replied to yet.
Paragraphs 3 & 4: no, all I have is a .mbf dated 8/20, which IS before the
trouble started. The DVD I made of all my docs on the 18th contains a .mny
dated 8/18 containing 5476KB. This may be it?

That 5476KB seems pretty small for a *.mny file that has been around
for a while.

Cal I'm sorry but how do I copy the existing saved .m12 file (it's a backup,
by the way) to a file named mike2.mny? First of all the .m12 file type is
backup so how can it be made into a data file?; second, it's a different
name. i don't know how to do this.
