Microsoft money crashes after I import a bank statement .qif file. If
imports it and then prompts me to indicate which account it relates to and
then crashes and generates an error message

Exception Information
Code 0xc0000005 Flags 0x00000000
Record x000000000000 Address 0x0000000010674a6e

Money then restarts and the account list shows the number of entries unread
but when I click on that account nothing has been imported.

I have tried the file to repair the microsoft money file but the error is
still occuring. Please help.

Close Money.

In Internet Explorer delete your browser temporary files with
Tools->InternetOptions->DeleteFiles or
Tools->InternetOptions->Delete->DeleteFiles.

Open Money with Start->Run and entering
"msmoney -s" without the quotes into the box.

Then go to Tools->Options->OnlineServiceSetting and
select ShowStandardizedPayeeNamesForWhichANameIsNotFound. This
is a global (inter-file) setting.

Download again.

Thanks for the suggestion. I deleted the temporary files and then when I
used the run command to start Money -s, after prompting me for my Money
password, Money then came up with the same error message as soon as the
program started and stated that Money needed to close due to an error. When
I looked at the error it was the same error message as when I import the bank
statement. Money has only been crashing after I import downloaded bank
statements this week - before then it worked OK.

Any suggestions?

Money by default opens your last file opened. Steve is correct you have to
be opening the wrong Money File. On your Vista Machine create a folder on
your desktop and copy your money file from your laptop in here. With Money
closed Right click on the Money File in the folder and run as admin this
will open the correct file. The short cut on your desktop is pointing to the
last file you had opened which was the incorrect file.

In http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902466 see the section "Run the
Standard File Repair utility in Microsoft Money 2000, in Microsoft
Money 2001, in Microsoft Money 2002, or in Microsoft Money 2003".

See if level 2 salv.exe will make a repaired version of your *.mny
file.

If that does not help, see if you can open Sample.mny from your
install folder in XP. If that has a problem, the problem is with the
install and not the *.mny Money data file.

Hi Cal

I ran level 2 salv.exe repair on the file and the log indicated that online
records had been repaired. However, when I then opened the repaired file and
tried to import the bank statement the same error message came up and the
system crashed and restarted Money.

I then opened the sample file and tried to import the bank statement into
that file. That worked fine and did not crash.

I also tried level 1 and level 2 salv.exe repairs on my money file and the
repaired money file then tried to import the bank statements again but Money
still crashed.

Given that Money did not crash when I opened the sample file and imported
the bank statement file, it seems to be an issue with my data file. Are
there any other things I can do to repair or fix my file. Any other
suggestions?

Thanks for your time and patience.

I agree with your assessment. :-(

You could try a newer version. You might install the Money Plus
Deluxe trial onto a different computer and see if it can convert
your file and that file behaves. You could do it on the same
computer, but if you want to revert back there could be some
considerations that you would not have to deal with if you did the
trial on a different computer.

If there are not other options that you like that will let you
import, I would try QIF export and Import into a new file. Yes,
there are limitations and it is tedious. You should end up with a
very clean file tho.

If you want to do the QIF export/import, I would follow the steps
in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/178830 except in the first step
4, I would suggest this: start the name of the QIF file for the
investment accounts with an underscore (_), and start the name of
QIF files for the cash accounts associated with the investments
with a letter. Thus you might have _BrownInvestment.qif and
BrownInvestmentCash.qif. This would cause the investment account
to be processed prior to the associated cash account. When the
BrownInvestment got created, you would specify that you want to
track the cash transactions. Then specify that the cash
transactions account for BrownInvestment was where the
BrownInvestmentCash.qif transactions get sent.

Then File->Import ALL AT ONCE using Ctrl+<click> to select files.
Specify "New or Recovered" account when asked.

Of course you will use a different filename for the new file, and
you will have both versions to choose from when done. I would also
set up the backups to make sure they are using different names.

My .02

I'm not gonna pretend I'm a guru at all, ( as Cal knows) but I had similar
issues last year.

Your file is OK without doing the download ?
If you don't have a recent one, back it up.

Then , my fix was as follows:
My bank allows me to download as money or quicken file from their webpage.
If you can too, elect to download quicken file from your bank's webpage
and SAVE AS
Money.qfx
File - import - download statement - THAT file into Money.
I had to do that for M2004 once it got to be "too old" (3 yrs). My bank
changed the format for Money files ( per MSFT agreement I think ?) but the
quicken save works fine. That's still how I do it. I download Checking and
Visa separately - save as qfx files and then import each into Money
account.
