I recently upgraded from Money 2002 to Money 2006 Deluxe. When trying to
open my Money 2002 Backup file, I get "A communication error has occured.
Please try your call again"

-Then Money crashes completely and sends an error report to Microsoft.

The Event Viewer states :
================
The description for Event ID ( 1000 ) in Source ( Microsoft Money Error
Reporting ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary
registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote
computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this
description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is
part of the event: msmoney.exe, 15.0.0.513, unknown, 0.0.0.0, 00000000.

Please try this:

(Before doing this, it is very important we are working with the actual .mny
file and not a backup file.) I the customer has not tried to convert the
.mny file, please have him try that first. If the .mny file fails, then
proceed with the following.)

1.. Remove Money 2006.
2.. Install Money 2002.
3.. Reopen the data file. If the customer doesn't have a backup, you will
need to have them search and open the *.m10 file.
4.. Turn off all online services.
5.. Remove all bank names that are associated with the accounts. To do
this:
1.. Click on Accounts & Bills
2.. Click Online Services Manager
3.. Click Specify where accounts are held.
4.. Click on an account and click the Move Account button.
5.. Choose Not held at a financial institution and click OK.
6.. Repeat for ALL accounts in the list.
6.. If you have a Passport on your data file, remove it. To do this:
1.. Click on File - Login Lockbox.
2.. Click the Change button.
3.. Choose Disable Money's Passport features.
4.. Click Next.
5.. Choose Disable this Passport for use in Money and click Finish.
7.. Run the Repair on the file by doing the following:
1.. Close Money.
2.. Click on Start - Run and type msmoney.exe -s
3.. Click OK.
8.. Install Money 2006 to a different directory. To do this:
1.. Place the CD in the drive and let the installation start.
2.. On the initial Welcome to Money 2006 Setup screen, click the "Change
where the files will be stored on my computer" option on the left.
3.. Ensure the location is different than where your Money 2002 files
are installed and click OK.
4.. Accept the agreement and continue with installation.
5.. If prompted at any time that Money detects an earlier version would
you like to remove it, choose NO.

9.. With Money 2006 now installed, attempt to convert the Money 2002 file
that we just worked with.

Please let me know if you have any questions and the outcome

Hello,

I have a customer with the same erro, trouble is, his hard drive died. We
were able to recover his Money files, but we don't know what version of Money
they were, and he couldn't find his riginal disks. So, he bought Money 2006.
We have this error when trying to import both his personal and business
money files, as well as from a backup on a floppy. (The backup is an actul
Money Backup File). Any ideas?

See if you can create a new Money 2006 file without a Passport
(click Decline) first.

If that succeeds, try File->Open of a copy of the customer's most
recent .mny file.

It appears that Money 2006 requires a passport account- I could dind no
option to decline. I had to either set up a new passport, or use an exisitng
one. I don't know what someone without Internet is supposed to do.

I did try opening the mny file without logging in to an account first (After
opening Money I went straight to file:Open without logging in) But I got the
same error.

You have to select Decline. It looks like an EULA.

Also, look to any software firewalls you have. Consider creating a
new Administrative XP user, and trying to open Money as that user.

I was able to log in to a new administrator account, and set up money without
a passport login, as you suggested, however, I still get the same error when
trying to open either the mny or the backup file. I am going to try to find
a spare copy of an older version of money, and see if I can't fix it that
way, but I don't know how successful I'll be, so any additional ideas would
still be helpful.

Thanks

Try restoring your backup file to the My Documents folder of the new
user. If that succeeds, I would look to some setting of IE6 for the
regular user.

For example, I would consider in IE6 doing
Tools->Options->Security->LocalIntranet->DefaultLevel

I thought I'd log in and explain how I remedied the problem, in case it
helps someone else and for the sake of completness. I installed Money 2002,
and repeatedly got password invalid errors. So I went back to a copy of the
MNY file that I had on CD (The same file as what I had tried to open in Money
2006, but since it was on the CD, It had been unaltered) I coped it to the
desktop, and gave the computer write access. Then it opened in Money 2002
just fine. I did not attempt to open it in Money 2006 again, as the customer
merely needed to get the file open, and he didn't care what version of Money
it was in. I kind of wish I had more time to play with it and fiure out what
the deal was, though.

Apparently, when I attempted to open the files in Money 2006, it altered
them some how to make them return a password invalid response when I tried to
open them again in Money 2002.

Still have no idea what cased the "Communication error" though.

Thanks to everyone who helped out and offered advice! I really appreciate it.

Money is not backwards-compatible. When you opened the file with
2006, Money made a backup copy of the Money 2002 file named *.m10
that you could have used with Money 2002. Since you had another copy
too, you did not need the *.m10 file.

That "password" error is what Money does when trying to open a file
from an earlier version

uhhh... that should have been "from a later version".
