I recently purchased "MS Money 6 Deluxe" at Wal-Mart. I've noticed that most
retailers, i.e. Amazon.com, Circuit City, Office Depot, Staples, etc. are
selling this for $59 and there is a $20 manufacturer's rebate. Wal-Mart's
price was $29 but not subject to rebate. I've checked the product number and
they show as 860-00391. The Wal-Mart version shows as 860-00394. Why are
there two different product numbers and are they different? I'm having a
problem with my installation and I'm beginning to wonder if I bought a "gray
market" item!

Some product packaging versions are sold with an available rebate,
and some do not come with a rebate. Some people like rebates. Some
people don't.

Some stores like rebates. It makes their sales figures higher, and
there may be additional advantages I don't know about.

No consumers I know.

Relatively few people actually jump through all of the hoops and then call
and pester the processor long enough to actually get the money. (And some
like Microsoft are better than other like CompUSA.) So, they can advertise a
better price than the actually deliver to most customers.

If it has a different SKU, it'll be a not for resale version or a volume
license version or one with slightly different licensing arrangements.

Will this version be lacking in any components that the other versions would
have?

The rebate card included in boxes purchaed at amazon, compusa, etc,
specifically exclude purchases from wal-mart, target, costco and sam's club.
That's because these retailers don't offer rebates and the savings are
already built in to the purchase price. The product is the same. I imagine
you'll see Best Buy added to that list over the next year or so. See
attached story.
