This is simular to David's post of 8/1/05, Strange 401K issues.

I am having somewhat of the same problem. My 401K is also administered by
Hewitt. I upgraded to 2006 Small Business Edition from the 2002 Small
Business Edition.

In the 2002, I used to balance the account manually when I received the
statement, then stumbled on the update online function. I loved it. I did not
have to do anything after that other then watch my money grow (hopefully).
When I started updating my account that way, each week, Money would make an
account adjustment in "Cash Transactions" that would cover the correct amount
and end in a balance of $0.00.

I then upgraded to 2006. Since then, I opened an E*Trade account and rolled
over some of my 401K money into it. I then setup E*Trade to automatically
update. Within a couple days, the money I rolled over was reflected in my
eTrade account. So far so good. I bought an ETF in ETrade. A couple days
later, that transaction was reflected, and my Cash Transactions showed a buy,
adjusting the Cash Transaction account.

I then purchased another ETF. The Shares show up now in Investment
Transactions, but not in Cash Transactions. Money shows more cash then what
is actually in my ETrade account. Plus, since around that same time, Money
quit adjusting the cash transactions in my Hewitt account, so it also shows
more cash then I actually have, and it grows everyweek as I get paid every
week.

So, in ending. None of the Cash Transaction sections get updated anymore in
any of my Investment Accounts when I select Update Now. It did work
initially. Now, only my positions in "Investment Transactions" get updated.

Any thoughts?

Strangely enough, I resolved the ETrade issue. I noticed in Investment
Transactions, my first buy was listed as "Buy" shares, and my second purchase
was listed as "Add" shares. I deleted the second purchase and updated the
account again. It then listed it as a buy and the Cash Transaction was
updated accordingly.

To avoid future problems, I suggest that when Money offers to update
your share positions for you, you tend to tell it not to. Sometimes
the position data in a download is not quite in sync, and will often
resolve itself on the next download. If Money adds AddShares or
RemoveShares, that can confuse things for you later. I am not saying
that is what happened here. I am not clear how that happened.

Thank you Cal. After I fixed the ETrade account, I edited the last 4
transactions in my Hewitt account, from Add Shares to Buy Shares. This
adjusted my Cash Transactions but did not account for the Employer Matching,
and set the balance of Cash Transactions off by the amount of Employer
Matching contributions. I just set the transactions back to Add Shares. So,
my Cash Transaction show's a balance that does not actually exist.

I guess there is more than one way to handle this. I would prefer
Buys rather than AddShares.

You could have the employer matching funds as a deposit into the
Hewitt cash account; that would seem the more rigorous way. You
could set up that Hewitt account to not even keep a cash account.

Cal,

The issue is it worked in 2002. When in accounts, and I selected Update Now,
it would balance out correctly. Automatically, there would be an entry in
Cash Transactions titled, Account Adjustment, in the appropriate amount,
zeroing out Cash Transactions. Also, it would do this and not assign the
transaction "Account Adjustment" entry to a Catagory. Initially, I thought I
would enter an Account Adjustment myself, but it won't let me with out
assigning the the transaction to a Catagory.

Not have a cash transaction in the account won't work either, as my Paycheck
gets entered and my 401K contributions have to go somewhere.

As stated, all was well until 9/1/05. Now it won't make the adjustments.

I see. You WANT the adjustments in the Hewitt Associates LLC cash
transactions account. Does your Account List show the expected date
for Last Updated? If not, I might have an idea.

Cal,

Thanks again. The last update was 8/25/05. So it is not updating.

How do you account for your employer's contributions?

Before I used the online updating, I click on "More investing tasks", then
"Update retriement account". While doing this, it would ask for the amount of
the employer contribution.

Since using the "Update Now" online updating, it would see new shares, and
ask if you want to add them. After selecting yes to do it, it would just make
an "Account Adjustment" entry in the Cash Contribution account, and zero it
out.
