after upgrading Media Player & Adobe Acrobat--I can't imagine how either
program would affect Money, but that is the only thing I've done diffferent.
When I try to open Microsoft Money it says gives a message saying that file
has changed and cashflow report will be inaccurate, then when I try to save
or even just close the program, I get an "internal error" --I also get this
internal error when I try to shut down the program from Windows Task Manager.
Then when I try to reopen that file, I'll get "file corrupt" and if I try to
repair it the whole program locks up.

When I open up back-up files of my accounts, they file will work for about 5
minutes or so, then I get the "file has changed" message (even if I've done
nothing but open up the account) and then the "internal error".

Uninstalling, then reinstalling Money 2004 didn't help--same problem occurs.

Anyone have any ideas about this?

Consider restoring a backup from before the problem occurred.

I have done that--the file will work for about 5 minutes, and then then same
sequence of problems occur (file has been changed, etc.).

You could open sample.mny and see if the problem occurs with that
file. That will help distinguish if the problem is with your Money
data files or something else.

If you saved your latest backup file after the problem occurred, you
might consider restoring an earlier backup. Perhaps your backup that
you made to removable media is older. Instead of restoring to the
default filename, you can restore to a new name that you specify.
Then you could have both versions available.

I've tried several older back-ups (even my original one, figuring if at
least I didn't have to type in all my accounts again, that would be
something), they all got the error message.

Fortunately, I seem to have figured something out. Since the files would
work for a few minutes, I figured something had to be updating that was then
corrupting the file. Even though I've never used the on-line banking, I tried
manually updating right after opening up a file, and sure enough, as soon as
I did that, I got the error message. However, even though the original error
message was the same, I didn't get the internal error messages. When I shut
down the file, I got an error message that "operation could not be
performed", but the program shut down correctly anyway and saved my changes.
I've tried opening and closing the program since then several times, and so
far it has been working correctly and saving correctly, even though I get the
error message "operation could not be performed" each time I shut down the
program.

So...I can live with getting a bogus error message. I'm not sure why this
problem would have started occuring, I've used Money 2004 for 3 years on this
computer without a problem. Something downloading from the on-line banking
update seems to be causing the corruption--I don't use the on-line banking,
but if I understand correctly, there is no way to totally turn off the
auto-update feature.

I would try File->RepairMoneyFile->StandardFileRepair level 2 on
your file.

To turn off auto update, go to Tools > Settings > Investment Settings >
Portfolio Manager Button and uncheck the box to Update Quotes every N
minutes. At least that how it works in M2006. I don't remember if it was
different in M2004, but there was definitely a similar way to do it in that
version.

I wonder if this isn't a programmed "failure" as my copy of Money 2004
suddenly quit last week after I received a message to the effect that
(paraphrased since the original isn't available) my 2 year subscription had
expired and had to be renewed. Since I only use the program to access my
bank/checking accounts for activity and couldn't care less about the other
so-called "benefits" I didn't renew and haven't been able to access my
accounts since.

Are we dealing with software with a 2 year programmed lifetime?

By the way I'm running under WinXP SP2 and am exceedingly suspicious that
this is merely another MS ploy to generate more income by forcing the usage
of "updated" programs which merely contain unneeded/undesirable functions.
