Account control in budget
Hi
I'm finding that when I create new budget items I can't
choose which account to associate them with. As a result
the forecast graph keeps showing groceris and cash:foods
added onto my VISA account instead of deducted from my
Chequing account.
This happens when I create a budget item from scratch,
associating it with a category (Groceries) that has had
mostly all chequing transactions to date. Why is it
hooking up with my VISA account?

Money 2004 with Data on Windows 2003 Server - File Corruption
I have been running Microsoft Money from the first
version and have run Microsoft Money data files off my
server for five plus years. I was running Microsoft
Money 2003 and Money 2004 data files from my Windows 2000
server with out issue for over two years. After doing a
fresh install of Windows 2003 on my server and attempting
to run Money data files off my 2003 server, I can not
longer do it without data corruption of the Money data
file. Something changed with Windows 2003 server.
I am running all high end equipment, 10/100/1000 switched
networks and Windows XP SP1 with all of the Windows
updates. Everything stayed consistent between my servers
(Trend Micro antivirus, Veritas BU, etc) except the
installation of Windows 2003 instead of running Windows
2000 server. The server itself is a dual 1GHz Pentium,
with 5-18GB HDs in a RAID 5 with 2GB of RAM.
MS has given me mixed messages on running Money data
files off a network server depending on when I call.
They first tried to tell me that Money was not supported
on a network, but MS KB articles and the Money Help file
say otherwise (except for running over a UNC). I am NOT
trying to use Money with more than one user in a data
file at the same time. I just want to run the Money data
file on the server for backup and security.
I am using DFS, however I have tried using a straight
drive mapping as well. I have turned my antivirus on and
off on the client and server.
I have also found that Intuit QuickBooks Pro 2003 is
having similar issues. Almost exactly. The same
scenario holds true. It worked with Windows 2000 server
and since the install of Windows 2003 server, if you try
to run the data file on the Windows 2003 server, you run
into data file corruption issues. I have seen this at my
offices and my customer offices, so I know it is not my
network or configuration. Intuit QuickBooks is a multi-
user application and it is designed for such use. Intuit
is looking into this as well.
Has anyone else run into similar situation and is they a
fix or am I missing something.

Microsoft MVP help, please!! Budget feature useless for anyone who uses recurring bills (with fix)
I've posted this above, but I got no replies... This is a killer
bug that makes the budget feature almost useless for anyone who uses
recurring bills, and it's been in the product for years. I've given
you an easy procedure to recreate it, and a workaround. I've spent a
lot of time on this, and I'd appreciate an MVP acknowledging that this
has been passed to Microsoft from someone they'll listen to.

I think I've found a workaround that suits my needs, and a way to
prevent this in the future.
For the MS developers, the problem can be reproduced VERY easily. If
a Microsoft MVP could please reply, I'd appreciate it. It's a killer
bug that makes the budget feature almost useless for anyone who uses
recurring bills, and it's been in the product for years.
1. Create a new Money 2003 or 2004 file.
2. Create a new checking account
3. Create a new recurring bill for $50 in the "Bills: Electricity"
category
4. Enter a few instances into the ledger
5. Delete the Bill
6. Create a new budget, including the "Bills: Electricity" category.
7. Set the spending limit to "0".
8. Finish the budget, and you will see that you are being forced to
budget $50 for the phantom bill. Right clicking on the
"Over/under-budget" category gives you an "edit" option. The phatom
bill shows up here, but obviously, you can't edit it. Deleting all
instances of the bill in the ledger does not fix the problem.
It's clear that if you could choose to NOT automatically include
Bills&Deposits in the budget, that there would be no problem. To
prevent this from happening, you must disassociate your recurring
bills with your budget categories. The workaround is as follows:
1. Remove the category from every entry in Bills&Deposits.
2. In the Categories screen, create new categories called "Bad
Expense Categories" and "Bad Income Categories"
3. Move every category that has ever had an associated Bill or
Deposit into this category, as a subcategory. The phantom bills will
follow them into the trap.
4. Recreate the categories that you just moved, if necessary.
5. Create a new budget, including these "clean" new categories and
excluding everything in the "bad" categories.
6. When you enter an instance of a bill into your ledger, you can set
the category... Just don't just don't apply the change to the whole
series!
Voila! Problem solved. The only real problem is that now your
reports might be screwy for a couple of months, and the autobudget
won't have any historical data in the "cleaned" categories. In my
opinion, this is the only reasonable workaround... I'm not willing to
delete any data in my file. Not that Money deletes anything anyway...
I tried deleting every account in my 10MB file, and it grew to 11MB.
What's up with that? Might as well give me an undelete option to

Version 2004 - bills and deposit view
Just upgraded from version 2001 to 2004.
The bills/deposits view in 2001 let me view a date range of entries, such as
1 month, 2 month, etc. thru a drop down list. I typically wanted to view my
listing for 2 or 3 months out.
In 2004 I'm not seeing this functionality, all I seem to be able to do is
toggle the date column between ascending and descending.
Has this functionality been completely removed in 2004 or is the option
moved somewhere?
Additionally...
I'm finding the listing in 2004 differs from 2001 in that it excludes repeat
payees.
for example...
the view in 2001 would be
10/1 paycheck
10/5 mortgage
10/15 electric
10/25 telephone
11/1 paycheck
11/5 mortgage
11/15 electric
11/25 telephone
the view now in 2004 is
10/1 paycheck
10/5 mortgage

I need my full listing. Is this not an option in 2004 or is there a toggle

how to import/convert TSV or CSV data
Hello,
The only file format proposed by my bank when I download
my bank statement is TSV (tab separated value). If it's
easy to use with excel, I can't find any way to convert it
to QIF or any other format that money can handle.
Can anybody help me?

Duplicate Payees
It seems each time i install a new version of Money I get
duplicate payees. On ehas the address I entered and the
other is blank.

Error when Processing a Bank Statement
When I down load my bank statement from my bank the
download works fine, however, when money goes to process
the statement in my account I get and error. Money asks
to send the error to Microsoft and restarts Money.
Once Money restarts, I see that I have "Items to review"
but I do not see them in my account registry.
I have tried repairing the file in all different senarios
I could think of, but nothing seems to work.

I am still using Money 98 and until yesterday could
download info from my bank. Today Money tells me that I
need a component of Money to continue to download. I
can't find any patches or components on the website. I
noticed that the banks has changed from Money OF to Money
OFX, does this make a difference?
Or can I just upgrade to Money 2004? Would I need to

Money 2000 Problems
I am just wondering if anyone has experienced the
following problems:
- I was experiencing a couple of issues with Money 2000
running on XP after using it for about 12 months. I
decided to backup my Money file and then remove and reload
the program from my computer. Everything was going well
until I tried to restore the backup. Money is about to
restore the back up and then asks for a password. I enter
the password which I have been using to enter Money in the
past and it does not recognise the password.
Can anyone help?
I have tried all the caps lock, etc, but it just does not

Budget and paying credit cards
I want to include debt payments as part of my budget, but
am baffled as to how to do this. Is the debt reduction
planner the way to make this happen?
I am also baffled as to how to budget for extra mortgage
payments. Tips? It's not listed as a category.

Bills in Budget!
Is there a way to omit the bills from the budget
alltogether? I set a budget limit for a category ie $100
for utilities:electricity. When the electric bill comes
in for $115.00 & I enter it into the bills & deposits -
it adds the actual amount to my budgeted amount (shows
budget amount of $215.00)! I want to be able to set a

Basic Money 2004 Budgeting Question
In MS Money 99 I was able to chart out several months
worth of spending by budget category (auto, gasoline,
groceries, etc.) By looking at this chart, I was able to
compare by month my actual spending versus my budgeted
amount for each category. In addition, the cumulative
totals at the far right showed how much in the black or
red I was in each category over the period of time that I
specified (e.g., Sept 02 - July 03).
I have been unable to find a chart that performs this
function in MS Money 2004, which seems odd given that
being able to track such information over a period of
months and years is vital to any budget. Any advice on
where to find such a chart -- or how else to assess my
actual spending versus my allocations for periods longer

Loan Accts
Once I have Set up an Acct as a Loan, How do I post
credits and/or debits directly to the account without
making the transaction a "Loan Payment" ?
I need to enter a transaction that initializes the
balance in a Loan Acct, and MSMoney will not let me enter

Money deluxe 2003
At the first of this year I installed this program to
replace Quicken which was installed on an old Apple. About
5 bank accounts were installed on Money with no bank
contact. All I wanted to do was balance each account
monthly. Had trouble right away, starting with one
account.
I would balance that account with the bank's statement to
the penny,both the bank statement & money had the same
ending amount yet the followimg month I would have a
different ending balance than I had balanced the month
before.
2. Support said go to your floppy back up and recheck,
that worked in May
3-In June I was missing checks that I had recorded in
May. I reentered these checks, backed up my now balanced
accounts to both hard drive and floppy.
4- Augest, did the same however now (Sept) when I try to
resurrect all back-up's I end up 7/8/03 as the last check
that was entryed. What is going on ? The rest of July
and all of Augest & Sept have vanished . July & August had

Business Categories and Budgeting
I use MS Money 2003 Premium and Small Business.
Categories tagged as "Business" (as opposed
to "personal") do not show up in my category list when
trying to make a budget.
I am trying to make a business budget to see how close I

I recently refinanced a loan...
So I created a new Loan Account, and answered all the
questions the wizard asked, including the inital
balance...
But Now I want to enter a transaction into my checking
account reflecting the closing statement. One of the line
ityems is the payoff of the old loan, and that is fine, it
gets applied to the balnace in the old loan acct, zeroing
it out...
But in regard to the corresponding entry from the closing
statement that reflects the funds I am borrowing on the
new loan... If I apply this to the new loan acct, the
balance gets increased to double what it should be...
Should I just gop back and enter zero when the wizard
asks for the initial balance ? or is there some other way

2003 Money (Can I -) question
Is it possible to change or preset defaults for the drop
down fields used to create new recurring bill under [Bills
& Deposits]? For example; [Write Check] is the default in
the payment method. I want it to be [Print Check].
[Monthly] is default for the frequency and I want [Only
Once]. I would like to be able to set my most used
selections as defaults.

Money 2003 locks us
I got a new computer (Win XP) and finally installed my
Money 2003. Am running Money 98 on my old Win 98 machine.
2003 installs fine, but when I try and convert the old
file, the program locks up. I don't think this is

Debt Reduction Plan in Budget
I used the Debt Reduction Planner, but upon trying to
create my budget afterwards, discovered that I could not
comfortably afford my estimated total monthly debt
payment. But now, that amount is stuck in my budget, and
I can't figure out how to change or remove it. The Edit
and Remove buttons are both dimmed. I tried making a new
Debt Reduction Plan with a more affordable total, but my
budget refuses to reflect the new amount. I've tried
Continuing from my original budget and creating a new
budget. Even with the new budget, the Debt Reduction Plan
amount is automatically added.
How can I remove the Debt Reduction Plan amount from my
budget???

Money for Pocket PC 2003 Not Installing
I've downloaded money for pocket PC 2003 for my handheld
but it fails to install. I have verified that I have the
correct operating system on my pocket pc.
Every time I try to install it, the handheld indicates
that I do not have the correct operating system. Is

Money 2002,printing checks
I am using Money 2002 as our family checkbook and I am
needing a question answered about printing checks.I always
have to have two or three checks entered into the register
to be printed before the program will even let me print
checks.If I don't have enough checks to be printed it
shows me an error saying I don't have any accounts with

Issue with Money 2004
In Reports Gallery under Investments, the Investment
Performance and the Investment Accounts option do not
calculate the total buys and income for the the correct
date ranges. The All to Date selection and the Date for
current year give the same grand total. I feel that if
someone were looking at a report for a specific year with
a specific date range the figures should reflect there

Searched faqs and recent posting without success.
I am trying to balance a new checking account with
Microsoft Money 2004, windows XP. My statement balances
are identical with that of the corresponding bank. I
have a 3 month report. Yet when I try to balance the
account, I always get the message: The starting balance
entered from hyour statement does not match the starting
balance calculated from your Money records". If I choose
the option for Microsoft Money to enter a starting
balance, all my balances no longer compare with that of
the bank.
Spend over an hour with support but they couldn't figure
it out. I have entered the statement date with starting
and ending balances. I have also used a running balance
provided by the bank. All the transactions are
reconciled, so there should not be any problem with the
starting balance or balancing. It is so much easier to
balance manually. But I thought I would save time with
Microsoft Money! So far I am disappointed.

Reducing Spam Associated with Posting to Newsgroups

Deposits from multiple payors
I know this question has been asked before, but I was unable to locate an
answer in the archives.
I frequently deposit several checks at a time. I can see how to allocate the
different categories in a deposit like that, but there seems to be no place
to put the payer. If I enter each check as a separate deposit, Money can't
recognize the transaction when I get it downloaded from the bank.
Is there any way to deal with this?

converting from quicken XG
I am trying to import a file. This file contains currency
I am converting from Quicken XG - Canadian version to
Microsoft Money 2004 - Canadian.
MS Money did all of the conversions of the files OK, but
when i go to online banks - i only get american banks to
dwonload from. i figured out how to get around that but
when i download new entries from my bank it comes back
with the error message:

Your statement contained a default currency (CAD) which
was unrelated to the currency of the account 'Desjardins
Checking'. Money does not support statements containing
unrelated default currencies.
my account is canadian, my default or base currency is
canadian - what else is there to change?
Did anybody try this from microsoft - going from quicken
to money and see if it would work?

MS Money 2004 Premium with Data File on Windows 2003 Server
I have been running Microsoft Money from the first
version and have run Microsoft Money data files off my
server for five plus years. I was running Microsoft
Money 2003 and Money 2004 data files from my Windows 2000
server with out issue for over two years. After doing a
fresh install of Windows 2003 on my server and attempting
to run Money data files off my 2003 server, I can not
longer do it without data corruption of the Money data
file. Something changed with Windows 2003 server.
I am running all high end equipment, 10/100/1000 switched
networks and Windows XP SP1 with all of the Windows
updates. Everything stayed consistent between my servers
(Trend Micro antivirus, Veritas BU, etc) except the
installation of Windows 2003 instead of running Windows
2000 server. The server itself is a dual 1GHz Pentium,
with 5-18GB HDs in a RAID 5 with 2GB of RAM.
MS has given me mixed messages on running Money data
files off a network server depending on when I call.
They first tried to tell me that Money was not supported
on a network, but MS KB articles and the Money Help file
say otherwise (except for running over a UNC). I am NOT
trying to use Money with more than one user in a data
file at the same time. I just want to run the Money data
file on the server for backup and security.
I am using DFS, however I have tried using a straight
drive mapping as well. I have turned my antivirus on and
off on the client and server.
I have also found that Intuit QuickBooks Pro 2003 is
having similar issues. Almost exactly. The same
scenario holds true. It worked with Windows 2000 server
and since the install of Windows 2003 server, if you try
to run the data file on the Windows 2003 server, you run
into data file corruption issues. I have seen this at my
offices and my customer offices, so I know it is not my
network or configuration. Intuit QuickBooks is a multi-
user application and it is designed for such use. Intuit
is looking into this as well.
Has anyone else run into similar situation and is they a
fix or am I missing something.

Money 98 reconciled item not deducted
As near as I can tell from going back over the account and
running the available reports, an amount that I reconciled
in a previous month shows as reconciled in the application
but not on the report. The result is that I am not able
to balance the following month.
Anyone know how to determine if this is what happened and
how to fix it.

Unable to Balance after Archive
We just upgraded to Money 2004. After loading it in we
determined that our money file was getting excessive. We
decided to Archive Data prior to 1/1/02. Now during
reconciliation, none of the beginning balances in Money
reflect what the ending balance was last month. Not sure
how to proceed. Can't balance any accounts except new
ones that started since '02. I think the problem is
related to items dated in 12/01 (archived out), but, did
not reflected until the 1/02 statement. Any help in
rebalancing all these accounts so they show the correct

Money Backup and Restore
Have been with Money for a few years - and couldn't live
without it! Since then have backup to floppy disc -
then ZIP and now CD-W.
A couple of months ago purchased a new computer.
Installed Money 2003 and upon opening it, went
to "restore backup" for the various files - with success.
MY QUESTION: I have at the least 10 Iomega Zip discs
containing Money backup files. Do I have to keep all
these old backup files - or can I clean off the Iomega
zip discs.
In other words - does my last backup money file allow me
to produce all the old files when they are "restored".
Would appreciate any assistance.

Phantom Bills included in Budget!!
From what I've read, the "Bills and Deposits" feature has been broken
for quite some time... most corruption problems that I've seen are the
result of a buggy bill that has been deleted but is still showing up
in a report/budget/balance/etc.
What is the best workaround for this problem? I've been using Money
since 97, but i've upgraded to 2004. I'm trying to use the budget
feature for the first time, but now it's forcing me to budget for rent
bills that are long since deleted. What's the best workaround?
I've seen posts that go back years complaining about this problem. MS
really ought to get to the bottom of it, and release a Money 2004
patch to fix it.
My suggestion: Simply add an option to *NOT* forceably include
Bills&Deposits in the budget. If I could just set the spending limit

401(k) Accounts
OK...I must admit it:
I'm completely baffled by how Money 2004 tracks 401(k)
accounts. My setup so far:
* I have a 401(k) account set up with a cash
(contribution) side and an investment side.
* My paycheck deduction goes into the cash (contribution)
side. I have this data accumulated for three years now.
* I've never put in any investment transactions at all.
I've been told I should be paying attention to cost-basis
and that I should track share purchases in as much detail
as possible.
What I fail to comprehend is how money flows from paycheck
to cash account to investment account to reconciling with
my quarterly statements.
Could someone provide me with some insight as to how Money
does this?

Incorrect balances
Everytime I balance my money account, when I gert the
next statement the balance has changed in the program. I
am also find items that have been reconciled no longer
reconciled. What is happening, it's a nightmare. I am
