I may see if there is a 2006 demo I can install on a different machine and
check these out, but was wondering if anyone looked at invoices in 2006 or
have any additional tips with 2004/2005.

Problem #1:
One of the problems with 2003/2004/2005 is that you can't seem to mark
invoices as paid without selecting an account to automatically assign the
transaction to. So naturally you get a duplicate transaction everytime on
automatic downloads. Solution is to create a holding account you just
ignore. Or if you can, merge the downloaded transaction with the payment --
which is really tricky, since you need to split the deposit. Normally your
bank deposits contain multiple checks.

Any improvements with 2006? Or any new tips on this?

Problem #2:
When you mark an invoice as partially paid, this is not calculated on the
actual invoice. So, you print it out, the total is still the full amount.
You can't have it calculate what they actually owe. Solution is to put a
note at the bottom what they paid, but sometimes this note is overlooked.

Any improvements with 2006? Or any new tips on this?

Problem #3:
The invoice template designer is full of problems. I don't need to explain
them all. Just wondering if they fixed any of this in 2006.

Re: Problem #3:
Yes, it seems very outdated and not very user friendly. I am a professional
web/graphic designer and it took me almost 2 hours to get items on the
template to line up correctly. Also, it would be great to be able to move the
colums for: item, description, hours, rate, and total.

I am certainly interested in any fixes to this irritating problem(#2)!! How
embarrasing to not be able to send an accurate invoice reflecting a partial
payment! It seems so obvious and basic. Who would have thought a program
like this would lack this functionality!

Invoices were meant to be created and then left alone. No business would
modify an invoice (I'm sure that would be an auditor's nightmare) to show a
partial payment but rather would create a customer statement . Microsoft
Money has this capability as well although it is not as user-friendly as one
would hope.

I disagree, and this is why I'm moving away from Money. Nearly all my
invoices receive partial payments being a consultant, and I want this to
show on the invoice like everyone else does it. If there is some "customer
statement" thing then I don't see it. There is certainly no template for it,
so it wouldn't look professional anyway.

One of the many reasons I'm considering a professional piece of software,
like Peachtree.

You know... I've always felt like my system was like a toy until Windows
XP... then it seemed I had a professional, business tool... sort of like the
B&D $20 drill until I got my 18v Dewalt 3 speed hammer drill.

MS Money (and Quicken when I used that 93-2003) seems the same... not the
type of tool I need anymore. Ok for a couple checking accounts, credit
cards, car and house payment, but under powered for professional and
business needs.

Except it's so much work to switch over... maybe I'll consider it for the
1st of the new year.

Anyone got any ideas or suggestions for a good, professional piece of
accounting software?

Tom.

I don't think that any upper scale accounting package will even let you
modify an invoice once it has been created. You have a choice to issue a
credit against the invoice or to cancel it but not to modify. No accounting
package worth its salt would allow anyone to modify a existing invoice as
that will just create trouble from an auditing standpoint. I come from the
big business world and that how those systems work as well.

Actually, the customer statement is not hidden at all. Click on Business on
the menu bar, then customer list. Over on the left-hand frame you will see
"print a customer statement".

I think Money just fails on invoices and customer management. I would
suspect Peachtree to be the same. In Money you cannot even add credits to
the invoice. I'm going back to a Word template and storing each as a PDF in
the file I have for the customer. I can still use Money to track the
activity, and give me a nice report at the end of the year to help do my
taxes.
