I sufferred a major virus attack recently and during the recovery have
apparently lost my MS Money files from January 2006 to date (1995 to
2006 are OK). My file was backed up on two floppies but the first
one has been corrupted and I cannot download disk 2 into the Money
program. I don't know if disk 2 covers Jan '06 to Apr '08
completely but anything would be easier than re-entering every
transaction manually! Does anyone have a solution please?

Probably not, but it's worth a try.

But first, if you have not formatted the infected disk, I would
mount that disk as a secondary data disk in another computer. Search
it for *.mny and *.mbf files.

If you want to try to use the floppies, First, write-protect both
floppies with the little slider. Do not consider solutions that
want to make modifications directly to the bad diskette.

I would copy each file from the backup floppies to the same
directory/folder. This will give you an extra backup of the good
floppy separate any problems of reading the floppy media from some
other potential problem.

The files will be named *d1.mbf, *d2.mbf.

Presumably you will fail when you try to copy the *d2.mbf file.

You can try reading that file to the hard drive of another computer
or two. Sometimes drive-to-drive variations will let a different
machine read it. Sometimes wiggling the diskette in the drive as it
is churning during a read retry will change the alignment just
enough to succeed.

Otherwise I would seek out a disk recovery service or program, with
the service probably having the higher likelihood of success. I
don't know who is good or not, however.

Here are some searches that will give some info, but I don't have
knowledge of the products. Plug each into your favorite search
engine:

diskette.recovery
floppy+recovery.service

If you succeed in getting good *d1.mbf, *d2.mbf onto that hard drive
folder, In Windows Explorer, double-click the *d1.mbf file. That
should launch Money and start the restore. When Money prompts for
the next diskette, click OK.

Thanks Cal, Wiggling the floppy seems to have done the trick
despite having removed and re-entered it in the A-drive many times
today without success! It just proves that 2 heads are better than
1. I've now backed it to two sets of floppies, but plan to get an
external hard-drive soon. Many thanks, Dave.

That's great!

I suggest you use USB flash drives for backup. They tend to be more
reliable than mechanical systems.

USB flash drives are fairly cheap with some being sold in 4-packs.
You could keep one in the safe deposit box or on your keychain.
