The advice I'd provide is that the file size isn't a real indication of much
of anything besides the headache to back it up. Mine's 53MB and counting.
I've never archived. I'm not sure what you find unmanageable about a 20MB
file, so I can't really help much with that. If it's just backups, consider
a USB thumb drive. They are getting Very Cheap.
Investment price history can take up lots of space. In M03 (M04?) and newer
there are some tools to remove old price history.
The easiest way to move accounts to a new file is to copy the existing file,
delete the subset in the old file and delete everything else in the new
file.
As to how to start Almost Over and save all of the drudge work of
eliminating the obsolete stuff but not having to setup the current stuff,
there really is not a good way to do this. This is one (minor) reason many
of us just let the file Grow and Grow and Grow.
