MS Money 2005/Quicken 2005 -> GnuCash instead ??
Since MS Money 2005 so far has been a wash, as well as Quicken 2005, it's
either stick to 2004, or wait for 2006 so far for me. :P
Meantime, has anybody any experiences on switching to something like GnuCash
which does not suffer from marketingitis, and is built by real programmers?
From what I can tell, GnuCash doesn't have all the pretty bells and whistles
like direct online-download, but has most of the basic double-entry/qif-ofx
import abilities plus possibly better reporting/graphing abilities, with
ability to access from multiple computers or something such due to a real SQL
backend.
Something to look at that seems stable and predictable, unlike Quicken or

How to stop Money 2005 auto updating share prices?
I am an Australian user of Money 2005. I recently upgraded from Money 2004.
In Money 2004 I could stop the share price updating automatically, but in
Money 2005 I cannot.
Australian share prices are 24 hrs old when updated with Money's live
update. I usually just do a manual share price update to get an idea of
where my investments are at. In Money 2005, you can manually update, but
everytime you browse through sections of your portfolio manager it wants to
update prices again (which revert to yesterdays price).
Can anyone help me stop automatic updates, whilst still retaining the other

I have more than 10 years of my datas with the program, why I am only able
to create monthly report for just the past 12 months (including the present

M'04 - How to exclude Family Members or other classifications from budget
Hi there
In M2000 you used to be able to pick certain family members to be
excluded from the budget. This was a nifty feature - is there a way to

Starting August 7th MS money stopped making transfers between accounts at US
Bank. US Bank states that there is nothing they can do because the transfer
request is not being sent by MS Money. My screen shows the envelope with blue

Upgrading 2005 from 2004
This is a message for ya'll trying to convert that file from 2004 to the new
"improved" 2005. This worked for me running a XP SP2 laptop with 2 users.
First uninstall 2005. Reinstall 2004. Under the file menu you will find
"repair money File". Click on that and do a standard repair. Reinstall
2005. Use the new repaired file and it works. I noticed that the repaired
file was half the size of the old file. It apparently had a record file
error. Hope this helps ya'll out. Now to find out what new problems I will
find.

Recurring Deposits Help
I have a recurring deposit of a paycheck that will be a certain amount for
the next 3 months, until the end of the year. Next year, 2005, since my
paycheck will be a different amount, I entered another recurring deposit to
start from January 2005 for a monthly frequency.
Here is the problem:
When I go into the Budget feature in Money 2004, the income section shows
two income streams. One for the current recurring deposit until the end of
2004 and the other one I set to start in January 2005 which throws off the
income amount that I have to spend. It says that I have way more income than
I have.
How thought about just waiting until after 2004 to enter the new paycheck
amount but that defeats the forecasting feature of Money 2004. I want to be
able to forecast future money streams and expenses. How do I enter these
differing paycheck amounts in the Bills and Deposits area and how do I "tell"
Money that I don't want two paychecks and to start the new paycheck amount in
2005?

Problem with decimals when downloading statements
Hi,
I have been using Money 2004 and now upgraded to Trial 2005. When I download
a statement from American Express atleast I get mismatch on transactions
because the downloaded transactions comes in without decimals. Two examples
35.20 becomes 35 and 9.50 becomes 9 this causes a problem because these
transactions will not match.
Any good idea how to solve these problems?

Not so advanced budget/reports feature in 2005
I recently upgraded to Money 2005 small business from the 2004 version in the
hopes it would fix problems I have had with the budget and reports.
My budget is set in stone and approved once a year for my non-profit
organization. When I enter the budget into Money, my recurring bills and
deposits show up in my budget and I can't get rid of them!!! Since my
recurring bill/deposits may not exactly match my yearly budget, my budget is
always way off. I have to calculate it by hand whenever I have to do a
report.
I've always considered Microsoft Money's implementation of the budget and
report customization to be pretty basic in functionality. So when I heard
that the 2005 version had an "advanced" budget and report feature, I was
excited. What a big disappointment. It turns out that Microsoft decided
their budget/reports wasn't dumb enough so they created the "essential"
budget and reports. The "advanced" version is what we already had in Money
2004.
I'm tired of calculating my budget by hand. I'm tired of generating several
reports, exporting them to excel, then combining them into a report I can
use. I'm tired of Money not having the ability to scale a report to fit on
one page. I've been a loyal customer so far but I've had it. I just ordered

Import Association
I manually downloaded a bank statement only I accidentally associated it
with a savings account rather then the checking account. The import occurs
now in the background with no option to change the account association. Can

2005 SB: Payment for invoices not showing as income in reports?
I just upgraded to 2005 and I am not impressed so far. For some reason
downloaded transactions cannot be marked as "Payment for Invoice", you have
to create a new transaction to get it to popup the wizard to allocate to
various invoices.
My most pressing issue is that when I run a report, everything I marked as
"Payment for Invoice" isn't showing up as income. Does anyone know a work
around?! Money team please address these bugs pronto, how did test sign off
on this release?

2005 upgrade and account merge issues
I guess I am just posting a "me too" post about how dissapointed I am
with Money 2005.
My problem is that using the new online account from yodlee and
attempting to merge accounts is totally broken. It duplicates the past
month of transactions again every time I try and there is no way to
match transactions, I either delete the hand entered ones and throw
off all my other accounts because of tranfers or I delete the
automatically downloaded ones and they come back each time I open
money.
Has anyone sucessfully upgraded existing active accounts with

Problem with Budgets after upgrading to Money 2005
I have been using Money for years. I was on the 2004 version and upgraded to
2005. I wanted to see what essential budgets were like, so I changed the
budgeting from advanced to essential.
I decided that I wanted to go back to advanced, but it won't let me. I get
an hour glass like it is doing something, but then nothing happens. I don't
get an error message or anything, but the budget just stays as essential.

...time-series returns of various mutual funds for purpose of
determining diversification among specific funds?
I am aware that REIT mutual funds and international stock funds tend
to be less correlated with domestic stock funds than domestic funds
with each other, but I would like to run specific stock mutual funds
to determine their specific correlation coefficients.

Money 2005 slow to enter transactions
I just upgraded to Money 2005 and I'm noticing that transactions that
have been downloaded from the web, instead of manually entered, take a
long time to save after editting. I usually manually enter them, then
let the downloads reconcile, but a few escape me now and then. These
transactions take forever to "enter" after I edit the categories,
payess, etc. Can someone explain why this is? In previous versions,
one could disable feedback settings, but I cannot locate that setting
in Money 2005. Anyone have any suggestions?
I've had other issues with this newest version and, after disabling
most of the new features, I'm trying to justify this software
investment. But, if I cannot speed up these modified transactions, I
too will join the long list of seasoned Money users who have migrated
backward to previous versions.

Upgrading to Money 2005 Beware!
I am a 3 year user of Money 2003 and Money2004 Small Business. Although I
have had minor problems, these products have been very stable and have
greatly enhanced my financial control. So I was very surprised to find that
MIcrosoft put out Money 2005 in its current state. I was receiving sales
hints every time I ran 2004 and so I upgraded yesterday. What a mistake! The
product has changed so much that nothing went smoothly and all of my records
, accounts and history were messed up. Their program just quit several times
on me without aborting messages - it just disappeared and I had to launch it
again. It pushes you hard to put out all of your information on the MSN
internet site even if you don't want to. It reconfigures you online access to
your accounts and creates new accounts at banks which you may have previously
told it to leave alone. There does not seem to be the same type of detail
configuration possible. Since I have other accounts that I manage for
children that I don't want to see in my financial statement this is a
problem. If you try to delete these new accounts it added, it wants to delete
all of your accounts at that bank.
This product has not advanced that state of control you have, it has reduced
it. I have wasted my upgrade fee on this one and will now be looking at other
alternatives. Too bad - I really liked the product through 2004 versions. I
removed the product and re-installed Money 2004. Thank goodness I had a
backup of my data because 2005 also changes the file structures. Be careful

Checkfree problems

M2004 - cashflow / budget issue - can't pick account for budget expenses
Hi There
I've recently upgraded to Money 2004. Apart from the fact it has been a
torturous 3 day process I think I've now got things working but I do
have a question:
In the cashflow section I can watch the money going into and out of my
accounts based on what I've budgeted. Problem is M2004 seems to think
that *all* the Money comes and goes out of one account (my checking
account) when the reality is that some expenses I've budgeted come out
of other accounts.
The only time this doesn't happen is when I make something a Bill - then
I can pick the account it comes out of, but a lot of my expenses aren't
*Bills* per se e.g. I go to rock climbing at a local rocknasieum some
weeks which I want to account for but is not a regular "bill".
Any ideas on this - otherwise the cashflow feature seems to be pretty
much a waste of time!

Mystery Account Merge Result
Hello,
I;ve setup an account with the bank for online updates and billpaying, after
I connect I seem to have two of the same accounts Checking and Checking #2.
They are the same and seem to be updating. some of the catagories for the
Checking 2 are different the Checking one for the same transactions. I tried
to delete it but it will take my Credit card account that I hold at the same
bank with it. So I tried to close it. But I see that in the budget area the
Checking 2 transaction that have different catagories screw up the budget,
for example Checking 2 has my deposits as Bank Charges so now on my budget
graphs I have no income but lot's of Bank Charges.
I tried to merge the accounts, In the account page niether account shows up
as an account that can be merged.
Any ideas

Constant connections with M05
Money 2005 (in XP) is connecting at startup and when I disconnect it, it
reconnects. The only way I've found to stop it is change my dialing prefs
to 'Never dial a connection' in Internet Options.
Is this normal for '05?
Is there a way to stop it from dialing all the time?

budget/bills issues in 2005
Has anyone experienced the following problem?
I recently upgraded from 2003 to 2005 and the recurring bills in the budget
summary appear to be doubled, sometimes tripled in amounts for the current
month and the next month. I have tried recreating a new budget and
recreating every recurring bill ... with the same result. The only thing
that works is assigning old transactions to a bogus category, deleting the
category from the budget, then recreating a new recurring bill with the
flushed out "new" catagory ... I got this from the Microsoft Knowledge Base.
If this is this the only feasible work around I might as well create an
entirely new file. I hate to archive the last 10 months of data for the
sake of being able to have a working budget.
Maybe I'm overlooking a simple solution. If anyone out there could help I'd
be tremendously grateful

Return Money 2005 -> Per Microsoft Support 'It's Yodlee's Fault'
I have been fighting with Money 2005 for over 2 weeks now. Since all the new
online services in it come from a company called Yodlee, Microsoft is pawning
off all online issues on them saying that they do not know when they will be
resolved since it involves a third-party. I contacted Yodlee, was able to
get in contact with the Vice President of Marketing and was told that they
cannot comment on "co-branded" software and that "all support would have to
come through [Microsoft]." That took me back to MS and then the guy I was
working with told me that I should just get my money back. I will say that
after being a money user for 4 years now I will be switching to something
else. I think an abacus and a paper ledger would be more reliable then MS
Money 2005.

Money 2003 D&B - Invoice Designer Problem
Whenever I try to start the Money 2003 d&B Invoice Designer, either from within
Money or from the Start/Programs/ Menus, I get a series of Window Installer
error boxes that say it "Can't load file" and refers to a SerialNumber.DLL
file in a temp directory. After clicking on OK 9 times, the Invoice Designer
starts. This is getting a little aggrevating having to clck OK 9 times just to
start the program.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled Money 2003 D&B without success. Can any body
offer a solution? BTY, I am running WinXP Home, SP1.

Has M2005 messed up for users not using MSN-anything?
I use M2004 with on-line access to Fidelity Investments, Bank One (Ohio),
CitiCards, ATT Universal Card. It doesn't do a few institutions like ING
Direct, Thrift Savings Plan (Federal Govt), Ohio Deferred Comp, but I'm used
to it and update the info when I get the quarterly statements. I don't use
Passport for background updates.
Question: Has M2005 messed up (duplicate entries, duplicate accounts, wrong
balances etc) the Money file for someone like me, who does not use MSN Money
sync, Passport, or MSN BillPay?
I am torn between upgrading (just to get the latest version .. I have to
have the latest of everything :-) and all the horror stories here. I don't
mind upgrading even if I get no added benefit. However, I DON"T want to
spend any time repairing a perfectly fine setup (M2004).

Loan Account does not show up
I've created a Loan Account. But when I try to show a payment as a transfer
to that loan account (from my checking account), it does not show up on the
drop-down box as an account I can pick. All the other accounts on my account

Can download web statements from one user login but not another in XP
When I login into money as user1 I can download my credit
card statement into my without a problem. But when I am
logged in as user2 the downloads will not work. The
computer quickly does something when I initiate the
download but I don't get and error message and nothing
happen. Note the same file is used on both login cases?

2004 to 2005
2005 created alot of bogus duplicate accounts with negative balances and
e-pay and a-pay are not an option any longer in pay bills even though billpay
is active. Been on the phone with tech support 4 times in the last week last
time they said they'd call back with an answer--it's been 3 days. Anyone
have any ideas? I'm a longtime user of money and like it but 2005 has really
messed things up. Tech support has created alot of backups on my comp. hard

2004->2005 upgrade
2005 messed everything up. Now have duplicate accounts,duplicate expense
catagories, E-pay and A-pay are no longer a payment option in bill payment,
MS billpay has duplicate checking acount called xxxxxx checking#2, been on
phone tech support 4 times in the last week last time being 3 days ago and
said they had to research the problem and would call me back -not yet called.
They've created all kinds of backups I don't know which one is good anymore!
anyone have any ideas? been using 2003 and 2004 flawlessly for 2-3 years

Upgrade to 2005 or not?
I'm running Money2004 on a WIN2K system. I was going to pick up the
latest upgrade and install it on my system unitl I started reading
some of the posts here. I've just started following this newsgroup so
I am coming to the discussion late. Would someone be kind enough to
summarize what problems have come up with Money05 so I can assess if I
want to upgrade or not.

Can't cancel Billpay-> can't remove MSNMoney data
I'm trying to 'start from zero' on the whole money2005/MSNMoney/Billpay sync
thing. I disabled msn sync in money2005, removed money2005 data from msn,
and cancelled my billpay account 4 days ago. But still, when I try to use
the 'Remove my MSN Money data' settings tool, it says i need to cancel
billpay first. Also, I still see old billpay details and account in msn
money home page.
Support (email, online, phone, msn, checkfree) is entirely useless.
Maybe i should start over with a new passport. Or maybe i should give up on
the idea that it's possible to achieve accurate billpay/msn/money2005

Sign in troubles
Money 2005 has suddenly forgotten to let me sigh non using my passport. I
can sign in on MSN and check my Hotmail but when I try to sign in to Money
with that account is says The Sign in attempt for (my hotmail account) was
unsuccessful. Please try you sign-in name and password again.

Money 2005-GST/VAT
On the back of the International English Money 2005 Std box that I
read, it says M05 Std tracks GST/VAT. Does the GST tracking support
mentioned on the box refer to the Australian, Canadian or New Zealand
GST?

Money Sales Tax / VAT
In Money, it is possible to keep track of the VAT in both expenses and
income. Although, on the invoices/accounts receivable, it is impossible to
keep track of VAT on the actual invoice, it only has an option for sales
tax, which get added onto the final price.
In 2005, or in the future, is there/could there be an option to either (in
invoices/AR):
- Have sales tax/VAT INCLUDED in the price of the goods instead of added to
the price, or
- Have an option, just like the account transaction form, where an income
entry can have VAT included as part of the price.
e.g. Bananas 10.00 VAT / Sales Tax 0.91
instead of Bananas 9.09 VAT / Sales Tax 0.91

2003 Performance
I upgraded in March 2004 from Money 98 to Money 2003.
I was able to copy 3-4 years of transactions across, but had to setup all my
Direct Debits again.
Money went fine until the beginning of this year, but since then the
performance has been gradually getting worse and it now takes 30 seconds to
amend or add a new transaction.
I have tried archiving as suggested in other posts and also tried changing
settings again suggested in other posts but it has made no difference.
Can anyone suggest anything?

I goofed and set up several inventory products as non-inventory
products...is there hope to convert same?
