Money Canada

I see that Money Essentials 2007 will not accept previous money data files.
I saw in a previous posting that there will not be a seperate Canadian
version of any of the Money 2007 versions. It says on the MS site that Money
Deluxe 2007 will not open Canadian Money data files. I have 15 years of
investment data recorded in my Money data file. Am I going to be hung out to
dry?

Where does that statement appear? on the website? It is not right
for Money 2007. Money 2007 has been unified for US and Canada. You
should be able to use the trial. If you are already using an
earlier version, I suggest that you download the free 90 day trial
and use both in parallel.

Copy your current Money file to a different name, such
as Money07.mny, and let Money 2007 convert that copy. Stay alert
during install to make sure the trial does not uninstall your Money
version. Expect a radio button where you will need to change from
the default. You should be able to run both versions, one at a
time.

If you decide to stay with the older version of Money, after trying
2007, I suggest you do not uninstall the trial. Otherwise you will
have to reinstall the older version, and perhaps there could be a
glitch there. That file association thing is the thing that routes
a QIF or OFX to the given version of Money when you click on such a
file.

Thanks Cal. I went back and tried to find the spot where I read this, but I
couldn't find it. (But I did see it...really I did!) Anyway, I loaded the
Deluxe trial version and it does work with my Canadian file.

A couple of questions.

1. One of the new features in '07 is that it will allow you to change the
investment type on the details screen of the investment. I have an income
trust, a Canadian investment type that is similar to a stock except that it
pays a monthly distibution similar to a dividend. I mistakenly called one of
these a mutual fund a few years ago when really it is more like a stock.
However, when I try to change it to a stock, it says that I have transactions
that are not allowed for this type of investment. The only transactions I
have are a buy, dividends, and a sell. Any ideas?
2. Since I installed '07, I can't download my bank and credit card
statements to '06. Would I have to reinstall '06? I tried clearing the
temporary files. Didn't help.

First, I don't think that calling an investment trust a mutual fund
is a real problem. However you should be able to make that change if
those are indeed the only transactions for the security. Check the
list of transactions to make sure. You can go to the investment, and
look at the InvestmentActivities. Make sure there is not an Interest
or a CapitalGain transaction there.

I would just leave it as a fund, unless there is a problem with
downloads not being happy about the discrepancy.

Those are via web site I assume, so you would need to go to the web
site and save the QIF or OFX files to disk. However the files may be
being fed to Money 2007 due to the file associations.

Suppose the file is QIF, here is how you would proceed:

Start->Settings->ControlPanel->FolderOptions->FileTypes

Select QIF

Click Advanced. Check Confirm Open After Download to cause you to
get the pop-up box. This will give you the option of saving the
incoming file to disk where you can File->Import to each. You may
also have an "Open" button, which would feed the file to the
last-installed (Money 2007).

I would also check the Always Show Extension.

1. I checked my transactions carefully. They are all buys, sells , and
dividends. However, you're right; it is not a big issue at all.

2. Haven't had a chance to play with this yet, but I will. However, I
think I'll be staying with the upgrade. The '06 Canadian Money (Standard)
did not have FYI investment alerts when stocks reach maximum and minimum
price targets. '07 Deluxe restores this feature to me.

Not sure why Microsoft charges rebate fees up front if a trail user decides
to buy the US trail version from microsoft.com in Canada - the rebate is not
returned to Canadian postal addresses.

Looks like we Canucks will have to wait for the Canadian verison of 2007 if
we want the same deal. Not sure why the packaged product is not available
simultaneously in Canada - I'm going to wait even thought my Money 2004
online quotes updates have stopped working again and I need to upgrade.

The combined package has got to be available in Canadian Retail outlets
sometime. Our outlets are still carrying the 2006 version only.
Microsoft.com does not look like they want to sell Money 2007 to Canadians
since they won't send the $20 rebates outside of the USA.
