I use MSN Bill Pay with Microsoft Money. I own a copy of Microsoft
Money 2004.

1. Things were fine until I downloaded a "trial version of Money
2005"

2. In loading Money 2005, I made the mistake of doing the
"recommended" load over Money 2004, which wipes out Money 2004
(incidentally, that was a download too - but more to come about that).

3. Microsoft Money 2005 completely wiped out my MSN bill pay file.
YEARS OF DATA with no way of retrieving the data, according to MSN
Bill Pay support people.

4. After three hours with 6 different support people from MSN Bill
Pay, the best explaination I could get is that somehow the link
between Microsoft Passport and MSN bill pay was corrupted by Microsoft
Money 2005, after the install of Money 2005.

5. MSN Bill Pay support told me that THIS IS A BIG problem that
happening to users ALL THE TIME. The informed me that Microsoft Money
2005 developers do not have a fix.

6. MSN Bill pay transferred me to the Microsoft Money support site.
The Microsoft Money 2005 support site WOULD NOT HELP ME, because I'm
using a "trial" version of Money 2005 and cannot find my documentation
for the "erased" Money 2004.

7. I asked Microsoft Money support people if I could download my
copy of Microsoft Money 2004 once again, because of these problems
with Microsoft 2005. I have now been conveniently "hung up" on three
times now by Microsoft, and no download.

8. I am now without:
MSN Bill pay data
a correct Microsoft Passport
and without a copy of Microsoft Money.

9. Over four hours on the phone with Microsoft. The sad part is,
Microsoft does not give a damn about my problem. Where is "customer
care" they boast about?

Would some law firm PLEASE file a class action lawsuit against Microsoft.
Microsoft has released a dangerous software program onto the marketplace,
and has failed to take corrective action to further minimize financial
damage to the unwitting users of this well-known defective product.

This is a prime example of why class action lawsuits can serve a purpose!

Why would anyone install a new version of a product (especially a trial

Oh, come on. I would expect a little more knowledge or research from
a MVP before posting a stupid response.

MSN Bill Pay does not have a backup source-system. The information is
stored on the MSN Bill Pay server. MS Money 2005 brook the link to
the MSN Bill Pay server, which is not recoverable while using MS Money
2005, according to MSN Bill Pay support. MS Money support knows of
this problem and it's happened enough time to be a MAJOR problem
according to MSN Bill Pay support people.

This is a prime exempla of someone that is a so-called Microsoft
expert having no clue in what is going on. Please do some research
before attempting to ridicule the customer.

Because Microsoft tell you that they can keep your data secure on their
servers. Which they prove time and time again they can't. Whether it is a
security issue or a data loss issue, they can't manage your data. Yes the
OP should have local backups, BUT Microsoft markets this pipe dream of being
able to handle all things for users.

Money 2005 is CRAP. 2004 was good. No one should upgrade. I would
suggest that all the owners of 2005 open up a trouble ticket on every single
issue they find, even if they learn from this group that it is a known
issue. Microsoft touts free support as a plus over Quicken. Spend some of
Microsoft's precious dollars on support for them. Lord knows they won't
spend a dime listening to what people actually want in a PFM. So make them
spend it on supporting this POS they built.

Greg,
If you truly have been a Microsoft Money user for EIGHT years and you
allowed yourself to lose all your data without having a backup somewhere, then
in my opinion, you deserve to be stuck in the position you are. Remember, in
the future, the ONLY one who will really care about YOUR problems is YOURSELF.
Take care to assure you know what is happening. Sorry. Steve

Why doesn't the intaller prompt the user to do an automatic backup eh?

Why would any company worth billions of dollars not provide something so

No, they certainly can, and most likely do. I think the problem is with
their offshored support who does not have a slightest clue about the
product. I'm sure that if OP calls not tech support but customer support,
and explains the problem, the incident would be escalated and the data would
be restored in one hour.

Customer care is where it is supposed to be - in customer support. You
called tech support, which is different. It is offshored, untrained, talking
to it is a waste of time. I wouldn't trust a word of their "diagnosis".

Find the phone number of MS customer service, call it, and explain the
problem. I'm sure the incident will be escalated, and your data will be
restored very soon.

If even that does not help, call MS corporate office - the phone number can
be found at www.hoovers.com.

There's no way they don't have a tape backup of your data. It costs money
however to restore it, so the authorization must come not from India.

I agree with R and Steve. We are angry and you mvp people should realize
that and go away. If I could get my hands on anyone involved with this
product, including the mvps, I would hang them.

I don't see why a legal action is so out of the question. I saw something
go by about bad hard drives on the xbox so why wouldn't that work for us.
Right now we just need someone to put some pressure on somewhere. We need
more press (although, given their reviews, we can't trust them either
because they are in bed with ms as much as the mvp people are).

I read a bunch of the MS blogs the developers write. Some of those guys
really use that stuff for feedback and interaction with the customers.
Serious products are getting better because of that and I don't see that
with a product like this. We have just one post from someone since this
product was released and that sucks.

The same thing happened to me. I for one made a backup of my 2004 file
before the upgrade.

If you happen to have a old 2004 back-up, just uninstall 2005 and reinstall
2004. Open the old backup file and resync it with MSN Bill Pay.

****Important, verify the Direct Online User ID number in Bill Pay and MS
Money. Mine were different. I reset the Billpay direct ID in MS Money and
all my old data was restored.

Okay MVP's. I concede. Like John Kerry, I admit defeat. I should
have backed up the Money 2004. I should have backed up my data.

Still, does anyone have a fix to this problem? I guess it's happening
to hundreds of people. Anyone hear an answer yet?

I guess on the box instead of "stop typing, now get updates from your bank
automatically" They should put backup your data.

Ultimately the producer is to blame, sadly the user is the one that gets
punished.

I agree with you there. There should also be a warning label that says
something like "may contain bugs". Seriously..... Didn't the install
routine automatically backup the money 2004 or pre Money 2005 data before
starting the conversion. So how was the data lost?

To be honest here, I have so little faith in any upgrades that I usually use
my work laptop as the guinea pig prior to upgrading my actual home machine
where I do the work. Also keep the guinea pig installation in case my home
machine blows up and I can't work on it for a while.

I know people shouldn't have to take these measures, but anyone who has been
using computers for a fair amount of time knows that personal computer is
somewhat less than perfect.

My MVP status doesn't hold water in this group so ignore it. I am a
Microsoft Exchange Messaging specialist. I am just a regular user as far as
Money goes, and would not hesitate to go back to Quicken, if Money took a
direction that warranted it. I have to say though, except for one minor
problem with Vanguard that I hear is being worked on, my experience with
Money 2005 has been good so far, and I am happy with it.

Dear Russ Valentine, I have for years used Microsoft Money, and very recently
after reading all the sales hype, decided to have a go at using the trial
version of Microsoft Money 2005. I BACKED UP ALL MY DATA ONTO FLOPPY - just
so that you understand fully we're not all idiots who happen to use a PC!

I haven't used my computer for two weeks until today because I have been
away. Today, I attempted to download bank statements only to discover that I
can no longer import them into the trial Money 2005 file. If I return to the
older version of money then I must first re-install it because the advice
given on installing money 2005 was that you uninstalled older versions! So
now it seems this is going to cost me hours and hours in catch up if i return
to the older version.

What I could do, is delete the present Trial Version and attempt to
reinstall it, and then update from floppy records which would mean that I
have only lost the last month or so of records. But would it fix the problem.
Do you think Microsoft will allow me to do that? Have two trial versions?

Daz Plant - UK.

1) Don't believe the hype about M05. See http://umpmfaq.info/Money2005.htm
for a second opinion.

2) The irrrevertibility of M05 files was described as part of the upgrade
process. This is one of the reasons MS makes the trials freely available.
Many people who start using them end up upgrading by default since there is
no easy way to go back ***unless*** the user plans that "exit strategy" from
the moment they decide to install the trial.

3) You probably will not readily be able to "restart" the trial clock by
reinstalling another trial.

4) The data in your file that you collected using the trial is still good
and you should not need to lose anything if you stay on M05. The stuff on
your floppy backup should be irrelevant. Know where your data file is.
Protect it. Assuming you get M05 up and running and the service updates
installed, it should open seamlessly.
