Help: I am a new Money 2007 user and am really confused by the cash account
that is associated with my mutual fund account. It has all the buys and
sells listed in it but now my total account balance is off by an amount equal
to the cash account. Can someone give me a quick tutorial on how to use the
cash account in conjunction with the investment account?

Much thanks.

I will gladly try to help you wish this.

First things first, the Cash account in Money is likely to mirror a real
cash account that you have at your broker or in your 401k. This is where
money resides when you transfer it into the brokerage but before the
investments are made. Usually those are two separate steps.

For example, let's say you want to buy $1000 worth of a mutual fund in a
brand new account. Two transactions are needed:

1. Fund the brokerage account by a transfer from your bank account (this
increases the Cash account)
2. Buy the investment (this decreases the Cash account and transfers the
money into the actual investment)

Does that help your understanding? If not, please let me know more
details about whatever is wrong.

The cash account ideally will receive the source of funds and
reflect how much money is available for purchase. A Buy transaction
will reduce the cash balance. What you probably have are AddShares
transactions, that do not affect the cash. If you change those into
Buys, things should reflect closer to what happens.

If you are just downloading position data, and don't want to bother
with that for an account, it is possible to eliminate the cash
transactions register for a given account.

Thank you both. I don't use a broker rather I download fund info directly
from the company, in this case American Funds. There is no broker cash
account so I guess I would prefer to not track a cash position. How do I get
rid of the cash account?

From Account Settings, untick TrackCashTransactions.

Thanks everyone as I had the same issue with my 401K in MOney 2007. The
things I'm seeing are that:

* My balance in Money 2007 is way off from that of my actual account (Much
less in Money07)
* I cannot untick, "Track cash" without removing online services from what
Money 07 says.
* I'd like for Money 07 to track the balance accuratley, don't care much
about "the shares added" but it would be nice and I don't care much about the
cash account.

I'm not sure whether removing the "add shares" would help, My register shows
both "Add shares & Buy" transactions...

Thoughts?

You can add a compensating transaction to the Cash/Contributions
register to bring the cash balance to zero.

Good point, but doing that manually will get it corrected only until the next
time it downloads transactions again. I was hoping for something a little
more automated.

It's too bad the contributions are not downloaded.
